Still- waters are fascinating and complex aquatic environments that are very different from the terrestrial environment in which we live. It is important to acknowledge and understand these differ- ences so that we fully understand the possible consequences of any management decisions. Although we describe our still- waters as freshwater lakes, suggesting that the water is in some way pure water, in reality it is never pure. Even rain is not pure water as it contains signifi cant amounts of dissolved gases and other chemicals. Water has the ability to dissolve a vast number of natural and synthetic elements and compounds. It is often referred to as the ‘ universal solvent ’ . As water falls from the sky and runs through or across the land as surface run - off, it picks up a myriad of chemicals as dissolved substances. It may also collect further materials, including chemicals that are insoluble but are suspended in the water. This veritable soup supports a whole range of algae and invertebrates, which support the fi sh that are of greatest interest to the manager. Animals that live in water are very different to animals that live on land. Although this is obvious, the difference is rarely fully appreciated. To understand how to manage a fi shery we must understand the sorts of conditions the fi sh live in: their environmental conditions. Part I of this book looks at still - waters from the basic principles of how they work, con- sidering some of the conditions prevalent in still- waters and how these fl uctuate over time and space, and describes the various animals that live in them. 1 Introduction Ecologically, still - waters are described as standing ‘ open ’ water, a term that covers wetlands including fens, marshes and temporary fl ashes as well as inland water bodies such as lakes, ponds, meres and reservoirs. It is estimated that there are 3344 km 2 of still - waters in the UK, of which 95% are less than 1 hectare (1 hectare (ha) is equal to 10 000 m 2 ) in area, which means that there are at least 400 000 lakes, ponds and dams in the UK. It is also estimated that the number of still - waters has decreased by 35 – 75% over the past 100 years, although numbers are considered to have increased in recent years. The management of still - waters as ecologically important systems is therefore of high priority for the UK ’ s biodiversity and, as fi sheries are often the primary use of such waters, there will be a requirement for fi shery management skills that deal with the suitability of the environment to support fi sh. It is thought that as many as 90% of the nation’ s still - waters may be in private ownership and thus removed from the direct infl uence of conservation bodies, regulators and freshwater scientists, further emphasising the role of fi shery managers. In addition, UK managers often manage fi sheries on continental Europe, mainly for UK fi shermen. There has been a growing trend for the recreational fi sheries in England to be based in such still - waters, in particular those for coarse fi sh. This has created a need for the systematic management of many ponds, dams, gravel pits and lakes to maintain good populations of fi sh and good - quality fi sheries. At the same time, the management of such fi sheries is becom- ing increasingly complex. It is no longer suffi cient to keep a few fi sh in a pond, as increasing regulation and demands for high - quality fi shing experiences by the public force the manager 3 4 Fisheries Management to stricter policies. Underlying this is the fact that still- water pond management is a business in many instances and must satisfy customers to make a profi t by providing good - quality fi shing; the manager can only achieve this by providing a suitable environment and good - quality fi sh. Fisheries management, in common with most other activities that involve a combination of problem solving and improvement that result in physical solutions, requires that well - developed planning is a necessary part of the process. Fishery managers are no different from us all in as much as we all plan. We all plan to lesser or greater degrees: we plan what we are going to eat, for example, and where and when we are going to buy the food we have decided to eat. However, the way we approach fi sheries management planning often needs to be more prescriptive. Each fi shery will ideally have a written management plan that will have been developed for it; certainly where the fi shery management involves more than a solitary individual a plan should be developed and put in place as a priority. It is important to ensure that the aims and objectives are clear and understood, that the actions required to achieve them are well considered and planned, and that the tools to measure or monitor the management actions are in place at the onset of the plan and not developed as an afterthought.

  • Rules of Boilie Fishing on Lake Balaton
Rules of boilie fishing on Lake Balaton (Recommendation) Fishing rules of Balaton must be followed by person, who has bought a “behúzós területi jegy”,a special area ticket for carry in/drop the rig angling method (annual, weekly or 72 hours ticket) furthermore he has to comply with the 27nth point of the above mentioned rules detailed hereinafter. Violence of this rule is observed as offending the fishing rules of Balaton and may conclude in withdrawal of your local ticket and banning you from the possibility to purchase local tickets. Our aim is to set clear rules and well-founded circumstances of boilie fishing, and above that to protect enormous carp, which possess unique natural value in a much more efficient way than previously. We also try to make an effort to prevent these huge carp from migrating and being merchandised. The aforementioned aims call for cooperation among the fishermen in this sector, thus a common ground has been built based on our discussions with them to establish the details of practicing this method. 1.General regulations 1.1. The aim of boilie fishing is to catch, to measure, and to take a photo of non-predatory fish, then releasing them into the water in a humane way. 1.2. By “behúzós horgászat” (here referred to as boilie fishing) we mean the method which enables the angler to deliver the rig into the water with the help of legal vehicles (e.g. boat, bait boat) or to take his rig into the water by swimming or walking without throwing any parts of it, then he’s allowed to wait for the bite on the shore or on the gang-board which is linked to the shore.

  • How to Make a Hair Rig the Modern Day Hair-Rig Was Devised by Kevin
Copyright © Anglers’ Net Ltd. 2007 – www.AnglersNet.co.uk – [email protected] How To Make A Hair Rig The modern day Hair-rig was devised by Kevin Maddocks and Len Middleton in the late 70’s. It was while conducting tank tests that they concluded that Carp were actually frightened by the effect of the hook and hooklength passing over their lips. The way round this was to mount the bait on a very light, supple, two-inch Hair (donated by Kevin’s wife!), which was attached to the lower bend of the hook. The long supple Hair allowed the Carp to confidently pick up the bait and pass it back to the Pharyngeal teeth without feeling the effect of the hook or hooklength over it’s lips. The Hair-rig has changed a lot since then in that there is less emphasis being placed on the Carp’s fear of the effect of the hook and hooklength over its lips. Nowadays the emphasis is on the hook being able to turn and find a good hook-hold as the hookbait is being ejected by the Carp. The easiest and most effective method of producing a Hair-rig is to use the Knotless-knot. The Knotless Knot The Knotless-knot is very simple and easy to tie. The knot simply utilizes the hooklength material to firmly tie on the hook and produce the hair of a desired length. Tieing The Knotless Knot 1. Tie a small loop using an Over-hand knot at one end of your selected hooklength material, I’ve used a 12 inch length of braid in this instance.

In line with existing series, also the new ones display “extra performance”, because the extreme quality is not only achieved with the development of new shapes, but also through the em- ployed materials, the finish and functional details. The strength/ lightness ratio has been tailored size by size, taking advantage of the special hi-carbon content steel, which is only available in Japan, where these fantastic hooks are produced under strict quality control. All points are chemically sharpened, then further finished by laser to get absolute perfection and durability. 5($/6,=(( 120 XN N Nickel Regular This pattern is well known all over Europe since when the carbon content steel was unknown in the fishing tackle industry. From roach to mullets, from eels to soles, it has caught so many species both in fresh and salt waters, showing great efficiency when baited up and while removed from fish mouth. It’s popularity is certainly also due to the long point, parallel to shank, and to the narrow ankle which provide bait and fish hold. All bait which are normally pushed on to the shank are finely matching it: from pinkies and squatts to earthworms in freshwater; from enchovy fillet to shrimp’s tail in the saltwater. &RGH 6L]H :LUH 3FV%DJ 121 XB BR Bronzed Forged MicroBarb Its code recalls the classic 120, as its shape comes from long shank popularity, but its strength is stepped up.
