Subject Objective: Impart concepts, approaches, techniques and practices in terms of preparation of a urban development plan for a small town/city

Introduction: The studio exercise will focus on the preparation of a city/town level development plan for an urban settlement. The exercise is aimed at planning at the general level as well as give due emphasis on the local area in terms of the preparation of the development plan.

The first part of the exercise will attempt to study the existing statutory plans and the regional setting where the settlement functions. Appraisal of master/development plans with an intension to understand different components of a town/urban development in terms of the inter-linkages of various sectors which are very general as well as specific to the local area.

The second part will be of formulating vision and goals for the settlement as a whole and sectors in detail which will be done though collecting secondary data and a field visit to the study area. The field work also cover the aspects of public participation taking into account of the consultation with stakeholders.

After field visitanalyse different sectors such as land-use, housing, traffic and transport, economy, socio-cultural, demographic, environment, infrastructure, etc. Also evolve detailed strategies on all aspects of development.

The Study Area: also known as Kanniyakumari, formerly known as Cape Comorin, is a town in Kanyakumari District in the state of in India. The name comes from the Temple in the region. It is the southernmost tip of peninsular India. Kanyakumari town is the southern tip of the Cardamom Hills, an extension of the range. The nearest town is , the administrative headquarters of Kanyakumari District, 22 km away. Kanyakumari has been a town since and is a popular tourist destination.

Though there are several places of tourist-interest in the town and district, Kanyakumari is especially popular in India for its spectacular and unique sunrise and sunset, thanks to its being nearly surrounded by waters. On balmy, full-moon evenings (locally called Chitra Pournami), one can also see the moon- rise and sunset at the same time. A planned intervention is essential to create a livable town for its residents and the visitors come from the globe.

Urban Development Plan: The studio exercise on “Urban Development Plan” focuses mainly on exploring the past and existing situation and improving the living standards of the people. The data collection and analyse by analyze the issues relevant to the socio-economic, spatial and environment development of the town/urban area. The regional context and the existing land use pattern of the study will be reviewed. At the same time the emphasis also will be given to projecting the future demands.

Stages-1: Initially the background study & literature review on the urban development plan concepts, techniques and approaches. Followed by review of urban development plans at national and international level focusing on small towns with less than one lakh population will be undertaken.

Stage-2: Review of urban development sectors in term of their independency and inter-dependencies through the case study.

Stage-3: Analyse the existing situation and project for the future, evolve suitable strategies both in terms of human resource and natural resource development.
