March 25, 1857 162 Years Ago Dr. E. J. Mims Sets up shop in Lisbon (Lamar) on March 25, 1857. On March 25, the citizens of Lamar (Lisbon) will celebrate the 162nd anniversary of Dr. E. J. Mims, Son of Captain George Mims, setting up shop as a town Doctor after completing his education. Dr. E. J. MIMS AUGUST 4, 1829 -AUGUST 26, 1861

March 2-3, 1865 154 Years Ago This house, home of Jacob Kelley (1780-1874), was used as a Union headquarters on March 2-3, 1865 by Major-General John E. Smith, Commander of the Third Division, Fifteenth Army Corps. During the encampment by Federal forces, the mills near Kelley Town were run for the benefit of the Third Division and foraging parties roamed the area.

• 10:00am: Bill Segars called the meeting to order.

• In attendance was Beverly DuBose, Suzanne Calcutt , Loris Flowers, Carolyn Govan, Patty Holley, Sa- rah Smith, Bill Segars, Brian Gandy, & Anna DeWitt (Guest)

• Minutes for January meeting were reviewed and approved first by Loris and seconded by Suzanne, all in favor.

• Old business: − Markers: discussion followed the agenda with Bill expressing concern over who was actually going to pay for the Byerly Hospital Marker. He stated that in a prior meeting with Dick Puff- er, the understanding was that the City would cover the cost. Whereas the city seems to thing the Byerly Foundation is planning on covering the cost. − Historical Calendar is half way through the layout. Looking to publish in May. Hoping to put out for sell in August. − Brian reported that the Wells negatives are a primary focus and that thanks to a donation of a new scanner, we are digitizing those negatives. − Bill reported that the Historical Marker Restoration test is underway with Keith Parnell and that he will be power coating the marker with hand application of paint on the raised letters. The finish will be a baked on finish and should holdup comparable to the original finish from Sewah. − Brian reported on #ThankYouBet . He shared that the County Council had voted to restrict the principal and the interest as expected and that the check had been deposited. − During the member discussion, Brian reported that due to a major increase in the humidity in the building the County did an emergency purchase of 3 portable dehumidifiers. The situation is correcting itself. He also alerted the Board that Hunter Jordan has resigned from the Board do to a relocation to Greenville, SC to take a new position with Collegiate Ministries.

• New Business: − New donations: Donations were discussed as listed in the packet and Brian commented that donations are on the increase due to excitement about the possible new building. − Bill discussed the visitors information and Brian reported that the Commission has not been tracking our digital patrons. These often requiring more time than our physical patrons. He also stated that this will be added to the monthly report. − Bill inquired about staff in the community and Brian reported that he would be speaking at the Darlington Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet in February. − Next meeting will be March 7th. Currently the Department of Archives and History have not filled the position relating to Historical Marker research and approval. They are still in the interview phase and are working to select the best person for the job.—All marker approvals are on hold at the state level until this position is filled.

RESOLUTION ADOPTING THE DARLINGTON COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION & MUSEUM LOGO

WHEREAS, the Historical Commission has never had an independent, marketable logo since it was created in 1965; and

WHEREAS, the Carolyn “Bet” Norment Phillips donation is allowing the Commission the op- portunity to add a museum to the scope of its operations; and

WHEREAS, the Darlington County Historical Commission Board seeks to unify our focus under one logo that sustains a positive image, is reminiscent of our historical legacy, enhances com- munications, and engages the community; and

WHEREAS, this new logo will serve as the official image for the Darlington County His- torical Commission and Museum; and

WHEREAS, the Board wishes to formally adopt a logo to ensure that branding of the Historical Commission is consistent and of high quality;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Darlington County Historical Commission Board approves and adopts the official DCHC&M logo per the artwork attached hereto, depending upon the approval of the Darlington County Council.
