This review is from: FreeTalk FREETALK-1200 Connect Me Skype VoIP Phone Adapter (Office Product) I like this gadget a lot. I had it all working when I ran into the no voicemail problem. turns out that there is a setting IN the device itself for voicemail. I set it in Skype and on the WWW, and NOTHING changed in the gadget itself. Go do Start / Computer / network. Double click on the gadget out there, and select call forwarding and voicemail.Enable it - set a delay.Works slick!@I was beginning to think this was a bad idea - but it does work. I don't know if this was a firmware update. I just put this thing into service yesterday - 2012/02/27.I have it plugged into my house wiring so any phone on line #2 is now a Skype phone! Try that - or send me a note if you want help on doing that.

This review is from: FreeTalk FREETALK-1200 Connect Me Skype VoIP Phone Adapter (Office Product) This product works as a telephone replacement with Skype service, but there is a major gotcha:Pro- in spite of other reviews, voicemail does work perfectly... just follow my installation steps below- from personal experience I can say that call quality and reliability are much better than magic jack and vonage, and as good as 8x8, Netiva, etc. the only thing that is better is actual phone company service from ATT, but it's hard to tell the difference... so with skype being $90 a year and ATT being $750 ish... it's a no brainer- Skype has added voice to text to send your voicemails to your cell via SMS- Skype also now allows you to use the caller id of your cellphone on outbound calls- this is a small product, about the size of a pack of cigs, and thus can easily be plugged in about anywhere- the yellow 'phone' port is for Skype calls and, very importantly, has the specs necessary to run your entire home phone wiring infrastructure, it can run at least 5 phones, I did that many- incoming and outgoing phone volume is plenty loud, can be easily heard or toned down with the volume control on your phone- sound quality was perfect- the product never drops calls or call quality- all firmware updates come automatically to the unit.... so there is never any techy fix up kinda activity required, you are always on the latest firmware.... very nicecon:- when I first bought this product, FreeTalk said it supported callerid.... they have since changed their website to say they do NOT..... obviously I have a problem with being told that, spending 50 for this and 90 for a year of service, then callerid not working all the time- compared to standard bell company service, there is a slightly longer transmission delay... an ATT line has maybe about .1 second delay... this has about .3.... you might say 'so what?', but if you have a very fast conversational pattern, it may throw off the timing of your sentences and then you start trying to talk over one another... this only happens with very fast talkers, so most probably won't notice- the instructions don't specify that you MUST set up voicemail and forwarding on the Freetalk in addition to the account center.... you CANNOT set these from a PC or Mac client and make it work.- skype currently DOES NOT support 911... if you dial 911, it will go through, but they will not know where you are... not a big deal to me, but it might be to some peopleInstallation:- you must have decent service, meaning at least 512k up, but preferably 1Mb up.... additionally, if you are a IT capable person, it could help to set up QoS for the freetalk if you router supports it- take unit and slide and snap the AC adapter into it... assembly complete- if you don't want to use the whole house wiring, just plug your phone into the yellow port and skip the rest of this step.. to use your house / apt wiring... you MUST DISCONNECT the phone company from your unit... this means simply going to the outside phone box, called a NID, opening the cover with a screwdriver, and unplugging the two phone connections.... then back at the Freetalk, use the phone line supplied to connect the yellow port to any wall phone jack in the house- connect blue port to your router using the supplied cable- plug the unit in and wait about 10 minutes for the firmware to go through updates- go to Skype.com and manage your account... go to the voicemail page and click 'enabled'... voicemail MUST BE ENABLED AT SKYPE.COM to work... you cannot use the PC or Mac skype client to change voicemail settings because they don't sync with the freetalk so you MUST USE SKYPE.COM at this page you can also turn on the voicemail to texting service which is very cool- on your PC, open 'Computer' then click 'network' in windows explorer.. on the right doubleclick the icon for "freetalk Connect Me UI" (if you are on a MAC, open safari and go to the bonjour bookmark)... this will give you the freetalk login page... use your skype id and password- click on the voicemail tab and click 'enable' then enter the number of seconds delay and click 'save settings'...- you now have working voicemail, enjoy!Notes:- currently to replace a phone line it costs about $90 per year... $30 for unlimited US and Canada calling, then $60 for a regular inbound phone number- the delay issue works like this: Person A: 'Hi how ya doing' .3 sec Person B: 'I'm doing great what's up with you' .3 sec Person A: .6 seconds seems like a pause in the convo to some people that talk fast so a fast talker at this point might decide B didn't hear them and start talking here even though B has already responded and it's on the wayOverall it's unacceptable to put a product out witha set of specs, thrn change those... This review is from: FreeTalk FREETALK-1200 Connect Me Skype VoIP Phone Adapter (Office Product) Pros: The adapter is easy to set up, works fine. Sound level is a little bit on the lower side (from what I am used to) but not too low. this device will let you use Skype (voice) in and out without having to have your computer on at all, this should be a cost savings for most of us with power hungry PC's. If you want the landline without the high costs or running it through a computer, this device combined with Skype will do the trick.Cons: There is a high pitch sound in the background that disappears within 10 seconds from when you pick up the phone, it's not loud at all, barely noticed it but worth mentioning. Caller ID is not supported and phone numbers do not show on your phone either. You can't use Skype's voicemail and will have to use the voicemail recorder on your regular phone. Also I did not receive the $2 Skype credit I was supposed to get with this adapter. I don't know if this is an error or what the reason is. I have contacted Freetalk and hopefully we'll find out.Adapter works as advertised, is easy to set up and for the price it's well worth it.UPDATE 9/2/2011: Today I received notice from Instore Solutions that they have given me the $2 credit and another $2 for their mistake and inconvenience. Their customer service has gone out of its way to help me with my questions and with the errors. I am pleased with how this company has dealt with my complaint and their prompt response.UPDATE 11/13/2011: Soon after I wrote this review my Freetalk device started to make increasing noises while using the phone, so much so that a normal conversation proved to be a pain in the butt. I was able to return it (at my own cost) and received a replacement unit, which had the same problems as the first one. I was told by Freetalk technical support that they weren't able to duplicate the noise problems I was having with either unit. I highly doubt I received two dysfunctional devices and have to take their comments into question. I haven't used the device in over a month although it is connected. We were to receive an update (notice sent to my email) but that never happened, despite the fact that I made sure I followed their instructions.. I am ashamed I gave it such a good review at first, but have no choice but to lower my excitement for this product. I will now give it ONE star and strongly advice anyone from buying it, otherwise you will be disappointed.
