NCAA MIDEAST REGION BASEBALL HONORS RELEASED Five region players named All-America
ATHENS, Ohio – The American Baseball Coaches Association and Ohio Head Coach Joe Carbone, chairman of the NCAA Mideast Region All-American Committee, have announced the 2007 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Mideast Region awards.
Honors recently bestowed include; All-Mideast Region First & Second Teams, Mideast Region players selected to the All-American teams and Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners.
“Speaking on behalf of the selection committee, I feel that this year’s Mideast Region players are very deserving of this recognition,” Carbone said. “They head a long list of impressive players and represent a lot of very good teams around the region.”
Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Iowa and Minnesota placed three players apiece on the All-Mideast Region First & Second Teams. Heading the list is three conference players of the year including Illinois’ Lars Davis (Big Ten), Wright State’s Ross Oeder (Horizon) and Central Michigan’s Tyler Stovall (Mid-American). The group also included two pitchers of the year in their respective leagues in Central Michigan’s Josh Collmenter (Mid-American) and Ohio State’s Cory Luebke (Big Ten).
The Big Ten was represented by 12 players across the All-Mideast Region First & Second Teams while the Mid-American Conference had six selections. There were four representatives from the Big East and Horizon League, respectively.
Among the 26 players who were named to the All-Mideast Region First & Second Teams, five were selected as ABCA/Rawlings All- Americans. Oeder and Michigan’s Zach Putnam were second-team honorees while Luebke, Davis and Stovall garnered third-team status.
The ABCA introduced a new set of national honors for the 2007 season when it joined with Rawlings to establish the Gold Glove Awards, a college version of the long-standing Major League Baseball postseason accolade. Among the nine players selected as inaugural NCAA Division I Gold Glove winners, the Mideast Region was represented by Ohio outfielder Matt Stiffler and Wright State third baseman Dan Biedenharn.
