To Our Membership,

The Ryerson Science Society stands in solidarity with the fight against systemic racism and the ongoing oppression of the Black Community. We stand with our Black Scientists, Leaders, Storytellers, and Activists. As students and student leaders, it is up to us to educate, spread the word, and shed light on the protests to fight systemic racism and the inequality that exists within our society. today, tomorrow, always.

From June 2nd to 7th we have taken the time to silence ourselves from regular posting; instead, we have taken this time to highlight the movement that is happening at the moment and begun the process of educating ourselves and our membership with valuable information that can help us better understand the gravity of this crisis, take more effective actions, and provide better support to our science students of colour who are a valued part of our community and been affected by proceeding racism.

We understand that one week is not nearly enough time to bring forward the topic of racial injustice and discrimination, that is why we are committed to continuously spreading awareness through our social media platforms throughout the year. As a way to start, we have compiled a list of different resources that are worth taking the time to listen to, read, watch, or even learn here at Ryerson. The Ryerson Courses mentioned below have been recommended by students who have taken them in the past. They each cover the topic of racism in different capacities.

The RSS is committed to the active inclusion of students from all marginalized communities, whether that be the Black Community, Indigenous Community, or any other marginalized groups in the Science Society. We strive to create equitable initiatives that include diverse perspectives. We would like to begin by attaching a suggestion box for the Ryerson Science Society Membership to put forward their ideas on what we can do for you in striving to make the RSS more representative of you and a safer space. We plan on reviewing your feedback and together, with the help of our Equity Commissioner and our Faculty’s Dean, we will work to address your concerns or suggestions and create a more equitable Ryerson Science for everyone.

Sincerely,

The Ryerson Science Society
