LETTER FROM THE RECTORY

Dear Friends, if that is what we feel, but to set this alongside the I know the Disney film Frozen had the song, things we cannot lose... but they don’t have a monopoly on letting go . If we’ve had to let go of a loved one we can still treasure the love that was shared. We As the poet Mary Oliver says, don’t lose that. If we’ve had to let go of a relationship, we can choose to remember the to live in this world good that once was enjoyed. Letting go does not eradicate that. If we’ve had to let go of a holiday you must be able plan then maybe focusing on all the creativity to do three things: that was generated in dreaming it up will allow a to love what is mortal; richer future to emerge. If our idea of ‘normal life’ to hold it has been wiped away then we gain a chance to reconsider what matters most. Perhaps part of against your bones knowing letting go is finding that different perspective. your own life depends on it; Looking at Jesus’ life there’s lots of letting and, when the time comes to let it go, go he had to do, it is part of the human condition, he had no charmed life, he shared our humanity. to let it go. In the end, when he faced the relinquishing of his very life, Jesus struggled, he wrestled with that We must be able to let go... How does that letting go. He finally found peace in choosing to resonate with you? In this season of lockdown and submit to God, trusting that the way God would Covid-19 there have been all sorts of experiences lead him, however difficult, was the path of life. of letting go. Some have been devastating, as This wasn’t easy for Jesus, at all, and it people have said goodbye to loved ones, some won’t be straightforward for us either, but as we have been just inconvenient as people have seen follow Christ perhaps his choice opens for us a their holiday plans overturned, and most of us way to let go - deciding to trust God, not glibly have had to let go of what we have considered but honestly, with all our mixed ‘normal life’- seeing family, going out to the pub, emotions.....maybe this will only be possible a little enjoying being together in church... at a time! But even if it is a gradual unfurling of a It is easy to see these experiences purely clenched hand (why not clench and unfurl your as loss, something that we didn’t choose and fist now as a physical prompt) - this does offer us didn’t want. Then the letting go is really hard work, encouragement. like something is being prised out from our If we do all have to Ɔ ‘Let it go!’ ƅ then clenched hand. may we find in that some unexpected blessing. I wonder if there is another way to With every blessing, negotiate letting go? Not to deny the pain or grief Lauretta

CHRISTIANS IN THE WORLD (The unknown author of the Letter to Diognetus (probably 2nd or 3rd century) wrote to explain the Christian faith to a serious enquirer. Its recipient was probably a pagan of high rank, possibly the emperor himself. ) You can't tell a Christian from a non-Christian by where he lives or the way he speaks or how he dresses. There are no 'Christian towns', there is no 'Christian language', and they eat drink and sleep just like everybody else. Christians aren't particularly clever or ingenious and they haven't mastered some complicated formula, like the followers of some religions But while it's true that they live in cities next to other people, and follow the same pattern of life as they do, in fact they have a unique citizenship of their own. They are, of course, citizens of their own lands - loyal ones too. But yet they feel like visitors. Every foreign country is their homeland, and their homeland is like a foreign country to them...They are nationals of various states, but citizens of heaven. To put it simply - the soul is to the body as Christians are to the world. The soul is spread to all parts of the body and Christians through all parts of the world. The soul is in the body but is not of the body; Christians are in the world but not of the world.

A one pound coin met a twenty-pound note and said, "Hey, where have you been? I haven't seen you around here much." The twenty note answered, "I've been everywhere - hanging out at the casino, I went on a cruise and did all the tours, then back home for a while, before going to a few theatre shows and shopping expeditions. And how about you?" The one pound coin replied, “Oh nothing much, just the same old, same old - church, church, church."

A country parson bought a horse to get round his parish. He decided to change the usual “Walk on” and “Whoa”. To set off he called “Alleluia” and to stop it was “Amen”. The horse learned the new commands. All went well until the day the horse got spooked and bolted towards the cliffs. The parson said “Amen” but the horse didn't stop. As they neared the cliff edge, the parson, panicking, shouted “Amen” very very loudly. The horse stopped. The parson recovered for a few minutes and then said thankfully “Alleluia”

THE WORK OF PEACE (Alan Paton - 1903 to 1988)

Give us courage, Lord, to stand up and be counted, to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, to stand up for ourselves when it is needful for us to do so. Let us fear nothing more than we fear you. Let us love nothing more than we love you, tor thus we shall fear nothing also. Let us have no other God before you, whether nation or party or state of church. Let us seek no other peace but the peace which is yours, and make us its instruments, opening our eyes and our ears and our hearts so that we should know always what work of peace we may do for you.

Alan Stewart Paton, (born Pietermaritzburg, Natal — died near Durban, Natal), was a South African writer, best known for his first novel, Cry, the Beloved Country (1948), a passionate tale of racial injustice that brought international attention to the problem of apartheid in South Africa.

DEAR LORD AND FATHER OF MANKIND, RE-WRITTEN

Dear Lord and Father of mankind, Send Thy deep hush, subduing all Forgive our foolish ways, Those happy claps that drown For most of us, when asked our mind, The tender whisper of Thy call; Admit we still more pleasure find Triumphalism is not all, In hymns of ancient days, For sometimes we feel down, In hymns of ancient days, For sometimes we feel down.

The simple lyrics, for a start, Drop Thy still dews of quietness Of many a modern song Till all our strummings cease. Are far too trite to touch the heart, Take from our souls the strain and stress Enshrine no poetry, no art, Of always having to be blessed. And go on much too long, Give us a bit of peace, And go on much too long. Give us a bit of peace.

O, for a rest from jollity Breathe through the beats of praise guitar And syncopated praise! Thy coolness and Thy balm. What happened to tranquillity? Let drum be dumb, bring back the lyre, The silence of eternity Enough of earthquake, wind and fire – Is hard to hear these days, Let’s hear it for some calm, Is hard to hear these days. Let’s hear it for some calm.

Old parish, new young priest. The long-established churchwarden sits there each week and begins to think that he’s heard that same sermon last week. And each week, it’s the same. So he talks to the verger, who agrees, and they write to the bishop complaining about the new priest he’s sent them. The bishop rings the priest and asks him if he’s really preaching the same sermon week after week, and hasn’t he got another sermon to give? “Of course I have, Bishop” replies the new priest “and when the congregation has followed the message in the sermon and changed their habits, why, I’ll give them another sermon!”

- 5 - THE MOST POPULAR BIBLE VERSES IBLEGATEWAY listed the most viewed or searched-for Bible verses for 2019. As it happens, five of the top ten verses were from Psalm 23, demonstrating the Psalm's popularity, not only among Christians, Bbut perhaps also among those who hear the Psalm at funerals or other events within the Church. If you added up all the usage percentages, Psalm 23 would be the most popular Bible passage of 2019 on this largely web-based platform. If we only give one mention to Psalm 23, then the most popular Bible verses were: 1. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 2. Jerermiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 3. Philippians 4:13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength. 4. Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (The other verses from this Psalm were 6, 5, 1 and 10.) 5. Roman s 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 6. Romans 2:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will. 7. Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 8. Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. 9. Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 10. John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

A waitress is very busy serving all evening. She notices that one of the couples on “her” tables is looking fidgety, and then, to her horror, the man slides gracefully off his chair and disappears under the table. She summons the Maitre d’ and he approaches the lady and says “Are you alright, madam?” “Yes” she replies with an air of confidence that she clearly doesn’t feel. “Are you sure, madam? Is your husband alright, because I just noticed him slide under the table!” “No, you didn’t” she insists. “Yes, I did, madam” “No, you didn’t, because my husband just walked in the door!”
