A Note from the Artistic Director/Producer, caryn desai

Greetings and Welcome to the opening of ICT’s 34th Anniversary Season! I read an interesting post by Howard Shalwitz, co-founder and former Artistic Director at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, DC. He listed seven reasons why theatre matters. Here is the brief form of those 7 reasons: 1. it does no harm 2. theatre is a sophisticated expression of a basic human need -- one might call it an instinct -- to mimic, to project stories onto ourselves and others, and to create meaning through narrative and metaphor 3. brings people together 4. theatre models for us a kind of public discourse that lies at the heart of democratic life, and builds our skills for listening to different sides of a conversation or argument, and empathizing with the struggles of our fellow human beings whatever their views may be 5. both the making of theatre and attending of theatre contribute to education and literacy. Watching the characters talk back and forth in the theatre is tricky; it requires sharp attention, quick mental shifts, and nimble language skills 6. theatre as an industry contributes to our economy and plays a special role in the revitalization of neglected neighborhoods 7. it influences the way we think and feel about our own lives and encourages us to take a hard look at ourselves, our values, and our behavior My dedicated Board, staff and I certainly believe theatre matters. I know many of my loyal subscribers do as well. It matters for our society, our community and for our individual growth and understanding. As Long Beach’s resident professional theatre company, we are committed to serving this region with our five productions and six education programs. It takes a village to make it happen and I invite you to join us for this season of Music, Merriment and Meaning – because it matters. And we have a special incentive for you today to share the rest of the season with us. Take your ticket to the subscription table in the lobby and we will deduct the price of your ticket or 20% (whichever is greater) from the cost of a subscription AND we will also take off an additional $5. Join us – because you matter, too!
