REPORT NORTHWEST TO THE MARITIME COMMUNITY 2017 CENTER

1 The sea is simply the best teacher we know.

2 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2017

Hello, friends. When you’re sailing, there are moments when everything is dialed in: the sails are trimmed, the bottom is clean, the rig is tuned, and the wind is perfect. These are moments that you can feel—I used to have students close their eyes. It’s hard to describe, but it’s a 360-degree, seven-senses sort of feeling of a boat moving in unison with itself, its crew, and the elements. From where I sit, if I close my eyes the Northwest Maritime Center feels oddly similar. We are humming. 2017 had its share of victories big and small. A solid year of programs, more kids and school groups than ever before, a great Race to Alaska, a successful Wooden Boat Festival, and enough time to plan and launch a new human-powered race and a program to bring maritime vocational training into our schools. We added some great new staff and board members, and sadly said goodbye to a couple who passed away. Beyond the things that happened on the ground, 2017 was a year of intense planning and due diligence related to Point Hudson and the Northwest Maritime Center’s proposal to manage the marina and campus. These talks are ongoing as of press time, and while there are a lot of ways this could go, I feel confident that at the very least our efforts have already affected a more positive outcome for the community. Fingers crossed on the rest. This is the seventh time I’ve had the privilege of writing the opening letter for our annual report, and I can honestly say I’ve never been more excited about where we are as an organization. A good team doing good work, doing it well, and teeing ourselves up for even bigger opportunities for the betterment of our community. Close your eyes—this place is humming. Onward, Jake Beattie, Executive Director

9 REGATTAS

Shipwrights’ Regatta Each year brave racers come out in February to thumb their noses at the weather and have a fun winter race. This year we were lucky to have clear skies and chilly temperatures. We encourage people to get out on the water, and prizes are given to the boat willing to take on the most “pick-up” crew. We placed 20 young crew on boats, some for their first time. The awards party afterwards was a smashing success. Perpetual awards—27 years and running—were given not just to the first boat across the finish line (Sir Isaac), but also for the last boat to finish (Tarani). The directional helmet award went to the boat who got lost or missed a buoy (Impossible Dream); the whack-o- meter for best use of misspent energy (Sorcerer’s Apprentice); and the trident for the saltiest boat or crew (Dorado).

Classic Mariners’ Regatta A weekend of high-caliber racers sailing their hearts out on Port Townsend Bay. Classic boats come from around the Sound to race in this friendly, 3-day event. Great racing, great food, great fun. Twenty- three boats participated this year vying for the coveted hand-sewn pennants; enjoying homemade breakfast and hearty, gourmet dinner; and sharing the love of classic boats.

The Shipwrights’ and Classic Mariners’ Regattas are co-sponsored by the Port Townsend Sailing Association. 10 11 NWMC CAMPUS Event Numbers

ANDREW BIEL & LYN GREGORY

Back in 2015, as a new family to the Peninsula, we discovered the Northwest Maritime Center as many others probably have—by wandering through Point Hudson. It didn’t take long for us to sense the adventure, value, and fun it brought to our new hometown. Soon we were learning to navigate and sail, attending the Wooden Boat Festival, and cheering on the R2AKers. Beyond our own experiences, we have watched the Maritime Center’s cultural, educational, and maritime programs provide opportunity for people of all ages in the community and beyond. As parents of young children, we, too, believe that “the sea is the most important teacher,” and are proud to support the Maritime Center’s mission now and into the future. Photo features Andrew Biel & Lyn Gregory with their children, Grace and Elias.

14 KAREN CROUSE & MAUREEN HUFF

After growing up in a small town in Arizona, Karen felt an extreme urge to get away. She graduated with a degree in health, physical education and recreation from Denton, TX, and decided it was time to live in the big cities… Houston, D.C., NYC. She retired after 42 years of service in public schools. When not volunteering at the NWMC, Karen’s time is taken up by dancing, yoga, gardening, and working in her shop or in the yard. The highlights of Karen’s bucket list include summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro at 70, and then doing two half-marathons in Victoria (at 72 and 73!). Maureen grew up on Cape Cod, where she learned to sail in the family’s bathtub-shaped, can’t-be-capsized, 14’ Bigelow Kitten, which she would sail to her best friend’s house (it was faster than riding her bike). After college in North Easton, MA, Maureen packed up her ’73 VW Bug, headed west and landed in Houston where she served as a school teacher and administrator. In 2005, she packed up her ‘03 VW Bug and headed west for the third, last, and best half of her life. (If Car Talk can have three halves to their show, Maureen decided she can have three halves to her life.) When unleashed from her duties at the NWMC, Maureen quilts, volunteers with third graders, and sips through movies at the Rose Theatre. Their career and travels eventually took them to Port Townsend, which is now home. After 20 years together, they finally tied the knot last year! Maureen and Karen volunteer at the NWMC for fun and brain enhancement while creating a little mayhem in the administrative area almost every Wednesday. Fortunately, mayhem is appreciated by the people here. Maureen and Karen say, “Come and join the fun! The pay is great.” OF THE YEAR VOLUNTEERS 15 WOODEN 750 BOAT KIDS’ BOATS BUILT FESTIVAL 7 35 The Festival un/officially started at Thursday’s Lifetime Achievement Awards: a room full of HOURS HOURS our community’s maritime crowd gathered to 30,000 SEA SHANTY LIVE MUSIC pay tribute to Tim Nolan for his designs, Jim ATTENDEES SINGING ENTERTAINMENT Blaiklock for his volunteerism and community spirit, and Miguel Winterburn as the first inductee into the Shipwrights’ Hall of Fame. Roger Hagan joined the board a few years back at the same moment he came to our community as the CEO of the Port Townsend Paper. Despite the tremendous workload of running the mill and shepherding it through an ownership transition, Roger found time to be one of the most active board LIFETIME MEMBERS members, rolling up his sleeves for strategic planning, fundraising, and the intangible value of just Aletia Alvarez showing up for events of all kinds and representing the organization. Mark Beaufait More than that, Roger took time to help mentor me as a professional. He was that kind of powerful Bruce Benedict that doesn’t come from being the loudest in the room but from a quiet, calm kind of caring that was Jon Benedict backed up by a keen mind and a great sense of humor. Add generous into that mix of qualities and Bill Brandt you get pretty close to Roger. Roger passed away in March 2017 after a long bout with cancer. Fair Russell & Svanee Castner winds, friend. To say you are missed glosses over the vacancy you leave in the world, but that’s about Jim “Daubie” & Mary Daubenberger as close as I can get. You are missed. Jan Dennler —Jake Beattie Anita & Laurie Dowsett Jim “Kiwi” Ferris John & Martha Foley Jan Hanly

REMEMBERING HERB WEISSBLUM Carol Hasse Pete Helsell A successful event with Hama Hama Oysters and Finnriver Cidery at the Wooden Boat Bill & Penelope Higgins Chandlery was made even more special by the participation of board member Herb Weissblum. Paul & Carol Lawrence Customers shopped, visited with friends, and enjoyed cider and oysters with special sauces. The Vivian Lematta store was full, the sales amazing, the atmosphere cheerful. Scott & Colleen Swantner

Then Herb showed up in his nautical sweater, name tag pinned, and ready to share his knowledge of and love for his ship models. It was an absolute delight to see people engaged and asking Herb questions. He was all smiles, too. Herb passed away at the end of 2017, but left his ship models as part of his legacy. He is missed, and will never be forgotten.
