In businesses, several traditional information systems, such as CRMs and ERPs, have also been modified in order to include social aspects. Social network analysis can be useful to cope with common business problems, including: launching distributed teams, retaining people with vital knowledge for the organization, improving access to knowledge and spreading ideas and innovation. However, these goals are often frustrated by difficulties, including anti-social behaviours of participants, lack of incentives, organizational costs and risks. Participation in social networks has long been studied as a social phenomenon according to different theories. This chapter discusses the basic aspects of social network analysis and some theories of participation in social networks, inspecting in particular the role of social capital. INTRODUCTION The most important technological trend of the last years has been the rise of social networking systems to social phenomena involving hundred of millions of people all around the world, attracting users from several social groups, regardless of age, gender, education, or nationality. Social networking systems blur the distinction between the private and working spheres, and users are known to use such systems both at home and on the work place both professionally and with recreative goals. Social networking systems can be equally used to organize a work meeting, a dinner with the colleagues or a birthday party with friends. For example, the chat systems that are embedded in social networking platforms are often the most practical way to contact a colleague to ask an urgent question, especially in technologically oriented companies. Moreover, several traditional information systems have been modified in order to include social aspects. Several organizations: (i) allow external social networking platforms to be used (e.g., Facebook was available for Microsoft and Apple employees before the general public launch); (ii) have created an internal social networking platform (DiMicco & Millen, 2007); or (iii) allow other social platforms for specific purposes (Millen et al., 2006). Currently, social networking platforms are mostly used without corporate blessing, maintaining their status as feral systems. According to DiMicco (2008), most users that use social networking platforms for work purposes are mostly interested in accumulating social capital, either for career advancement or to gather support for their own projects inside the company. In order to understand how a social network could be used to increase interactions, information sharing and benefits in teams and organizations, it is useful to refer to analytical models, based on both network topology and users' own interests. Social networks are typically studied using Social Network Analysis, a discipline that focuses on the structural and topological features of the network. Also, participation in such networks has long been studied as a social phenomenon according to different theories. Understanding the status of a social network, or the usage pattern of an online social networking platform, requires to study the system according to both static and dynamic models. Moreover, the theories of participation in social networks allow not only to study, but also to guide the dynamics of a given social network. The chapter is organized in the following way. First of all, we will describe the different kinds of virtual communities, social media technologies and applications which are available. Then, we will focus on models and theories of participation in social media, discussing also various models of information spreading and the issue of anti-social behaviours. We will then highlight the challenges faced by organizations and firms in adopting social media, either in internal or public way. Finally, we will provide some concluding remarks. TECHNOLOGIES FOR SOCIAL ONLINE COLLABORATION In general, Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) is defined as any human communication that occurs through the use of two or more electronic devices (McQuail, 2005). Through CMC, users are able to create various kinds of virtual communities, i.e., networks of users whose connections mainly exist online. In the following paragraphs we discuss the features of the most typical kinds of virtual communities: (i) Virtual Organizations, (ii) Virtual Teams, and (iii) online Networks of Practice. Types of virtual communities Although there are several differences that clearly set the concepts apart, the trait d'union of the different kinds of virtual communities are (i) the lack of central authority, (ii) their temporary and impromptu nature, and (iii) the importance of reputation and trust as opposed to bureaucracy and law. According to the definition given by Mowshowitz (1994), a Virtual Organization is “a temporary network of autonomous organizations that cooperate based on complementary competencies and connect their information systems to those of their partners via networks aiming at developing, making, and distributing products in cooperation.” The term was then popularized by the Grid Computing community, referring to Virtual Organizations as “flexible, secure, coordinated resource sharing among dynamic collections of individuals, institutions, and resources” (Foster et al., 2001). The premise of Virtual Organizations is the technical availability of tools for effective collaboration among people located in different places, but their definition also emphasizes the possibility to share a large number of resources, including documents, data, knowledge and tools among interested people (Poggi & Tomaiuolo, 2010; Bergenti et al., 2005). Their importance is sustained by continuing trends in production and social forms, including the growing number of knowledge workers, the emergence of integrated industrial district and other aspects developing at an international level, like dynamic supply chains, just-in-time production, sub-contracting, delocalization, externalization, global logistics and mass migrations which collectively are usually named “globalization”. A Virtual Team, according to Powell et al. (2004), is a “group of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed workers brought together by information and telecommunication technologies to accomplish one or more organizational tasks.” Virtual Teams can represent organizational structures within the context of Virtual Organizations, but they can also come into existence in other situations, where independent people collaborate on a project, for example an open source software. An online Network of Practice (or interest) is a group of people who share a profession or a craft, whose main interactions occur through communication networks and tools, including forums and other discussion boards. The creation of the group typically occurs either: (i) in a spontaneous and natural way, because of a common interest of its members, or (ii) it can be tailored exclusively to actual practitioners, forged specifically with the goal of sharing and increasing their professional skills and knowledge. Requirements and features of Online Social Networks In OSNs there are at least three distinct functional elements: (i) profile management, (ii) social graph management and (iii) content production and discussion. In fact, by definition, a social network cannot lack social graph management and self-presentation, no matter how minimal. On the other hand, virtually no modern OSN lacks the content generation features. According to these three main functional areas, it is also possible to draw a classification of the OSNs in three main categories: (i) systems where the profile and social graph management is prevalent; (ii) systems where the content has a prominent role with respect to social networking activities and there are frequent interactions with people not closely related; and (iii) systems where the two aspects have roughly the same importance. The archetypal examples of the first category of systems are business-related and professional OSNs, like Linkedin. People pay a great deal of attention in creating their profile. In this type of systems there are usually various relationships among users, representing the variety of relationships that members may have in real life. Most users do not visit the site daily and do not add content to the system often (Skeels & Grudin, 2008). The second type includes blogging, micro-blogging and media sharing web sites, like Twitter. The “follow” relationships, which are typical for a system of this kind, are usually not symmetric. The focus is in information transmission; often the system does not support a proper profile and sometimes even the contacts may be hidden. Often weak semantic techniques such as Twitter hash-tags are used, in order to read content by subject instead than by author. Through collaborative tagging, the actors of the system may develop a sort of emergent semantics (Mika, 2007), possibly in the form of so-called “folksonomies”. Considering that tags usage is a heavy tailed power-law like distribution, i.e., most people actually uses very few tags, collaborative tagging usually produce a good classification of data (Halpin et al., 2007). For example, Facebook has increased the number of its subscribers worldwide from approx. 660 million in March 2011 to approx. 840 million in March 2012 (http://www.internetworldstats.com/facebook.htm). At the time of this writing, according to Twitter announcements, the number of ‘tweets’ people send is more than one billion every 3 days or more than 4,000 tweets/sec each consisting of a text message of 140 characters or less, and the number of Wikipedia articles has increased from 3.5 million in January 2011 to 3.8 million in January 2012 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Size_of_Wikipedia). The Chinese microblogging service Sina Weibo, claims to have registered more than 300 million users in just 3 years.

We construct a monthly panel data to addresses a Facebook group member's motivation for information exchange between January 2015 and May 2017. Based on Poisson and negative binomial regressions, we found that: (i) members who have previously asked questions are more active in sharing information than people who have never asked; (ii) other members' positive expressions to previous information shared (such as clicking likes) promote future information sharing; (iii) the act of information sharing by one’s peer promote his/her own information sharing, and (iv) the more the member shares information in the past, the more s/he asks information today. These findings suggest that reciprocity does play a significant role in motivating information exchange even in the virtual communities of practice, similar to the communities of practice. We also confirm that professional reputation is one of the motivations for information sharing and that there is a positive effect of peer’s prosocial behavior. Weatherby 3 4 Abstract The primary objective of this doctoral research is to understand the relationship between teachers’ participation in online communities of practice and the development of their teaching practice. The online community at the centre of this research is the Computing at School (CAS) community, created to support the computing curriculum in the United Kingdom. A mixed-methods methodology was employed that included a survey of CAS member teachers as well as semi-structured interviews with a subset of surveyed teachers. A content analysis of interactions between members on the CAS online community aided in development of maps of teacher context and in understanding whether CAS exhibits characteristics of a COP. Findings indicate that some teachers report significant changes to their teaching, classroom management, lesson planning or personal understanding of computing concepts as a result of their participation in the CAS community. CAS exhibits characteristics of a COP, according to Wenger’s (1998) framework, but not all CAS teachers use CAS in this manner. Other CAS members use CAS simply as a resource bank, from which to download activities for classroom use. Findings also reveal that a computing teacher’s background characteristics, notably his or her professional experience prior to teaching computing, play an important role in their attitudes toward and preparedness for teaching computing as well as influencing the professional development resources to which they have access.

To address this gap, we develop a theoretical model and a set of propositions that explain knowledge contribution in voluntary, computer-mediated, very large and open networks focused on knowledge exchange around a specific practice. We base our model on theories of social networks and collective action to explain how a social network of volunteers sustains productive exchanges between individuals, such as the exchange of knowledge. We utilize the concept of a network of practice to illustrate how the macrostructural properties of the communication media, network size, access to the network, and mode of participation affect network dynamics and knowledge contribution. The study builds on a theoretical framework derived from the theory of reasoned action and theories of social capital and social exchange. A model of knowledge sharing in an electronic network of practice has been developed based on this framework, which attempts to integrate factors validated through recent empirical studies (Kankanhalli et al., 2005; Wasko and Faraj, 2005; Bock et al., 2005). The model that considers the factors influencing the knowledge contributor and the knowledge seeker has been empirically tested using a survey in the Financial Management Community of Practice (COP) in the USAF Portal. Figure 1 shows the research model adopted for the study, which incorporates constructs from social exchange theory and social capital theory. Data were collected from members of the Financial Management (FM) Communities of Practice (COP) on the AF portal. Partial least squares (PLS) was chosen as the structural equation analysis method to the test the hypotheses. The study demonstrated that experience in the profession influenced the amount of contribution, but that self-rated expertise did not. The findings indicate that relational capital may not be as important to usage, but it is strongly related to the intention to share knowledge. The study also indicated that commitment to the community of practice was not a factor in knowledge contribution.

Previous literature, mainly influenced by a cognitive tradition, tends to explain this either through features of the technology such as interface design or through individual motivational structures. This study explores the insights Actor-Network Theory (Callon, 1986; Latour, 1986; Law, 1986c; Law, 1986b; Law, 1992) and a practice-based approach (Gherardi, 2000; Orlikowski, 2002; Reckwitz, 2002; Schatzki, 2002; Nicolini et al., 2003; Schatzki, 2005; Gherardi, 2009b; Feldman and Orlikowski, 2011; Nicolini, 2011; Cox, 2012) provide to more fully explain participation in online communities. The study focuses on the failure to establish an online community supported by a collaborative technology as part of a Human Resources project within a multi-campus University in Mexico. A range of methods for data collection were used, however semi- structured interviews were the main basis for analysis. Initially, analysing communication activity in the community showed low levels of participation, leading to conduct 30 interviews with actors playing different roles during the project; 17 interviews were conducted in the initial stage of the study and 13 interviews in the final stage. Work- related documentation and observation in online meetings were also used as sources of data. Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and a practice-based approach (PBA), both members of the praxeological family of theories (Reckwitz, 2002), were used in sequential order to inform the analyses.

    Management 2015/ 77 John Chrisentary, Dennis Barrett University of Phoenix An Exploration of Leadership in Virtual Communities of Practice UDC: 005.322:316.46 005.941 DOI: 10.7595/management.fon.2015.0027 This qualitative phenomenological research study represents the personal and professional lived experiences of midlevel leaders’ effective management of virtual committees of practice (VCoP) in medical device compa - nies in the Atlanta metro area. In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 leaders of VCoP from different medical device functional specialties. The study used a combination of the modified van Manen (1990) and van Kaam methods (Moustakas, 1994) to facilitate the analysis of the data gathered through in-depth inter - views. This method served as the template for data collection and analysis. The research study revealed common themes after an analysis of data. Six emergent themes were identified: (a) empowerment, (b) com - munication, (c) trust, (d) encouragement/inspiration, (e) integrity, and (f) connecting with individuals. The re - search findings revealed a leadership model that relies on the development of genuine leaders/follower relationships to lead a VCoP effectively. As it approaches the two decade milestone, the concept of Community of Practice (CoP) faces what can be described as a midlife crisis. It has achieved wide diffusion, but users have adapted it to suit their needs, leading to a proliferation of diverging interpretations. Recent critiques lament that the concept is losing its coherence and analytical power. Method. This review uses Benders and van Veen’s (2001) model of a management fashion to account for the popularity of CoPs in the business and organisation studies literature, and for the current crisis. Results. The literature displays considerable confusion between CoPs and other social structures concerned with knowledge and learning, although recent typologies are helping to clarify concepts. Researchers have accepted CoPs as a enduring element in the knowledge- based view of the firm, but practitioners have mostly used CoPs as fashionable management discourse, specifically as a Knowledge Management tool, resulting in numerous publications based on pragmatic interpretations of the concept. By now, the CoP fashion is fading in the practitioner literature, but the researcher community displays renewed interest in the form of several in-depth critiques and a resurgence of theory-grounded studies. Conclusion. The review therefore predicts the CoP concept will successfully mature out of its current crisis through a new period, already started, of theory development grounded in rigourous studies conducted within organisations.
