“College Bound”? Admission Tests are Required for College Admission

College admission tests are one of the requirements when applying to a college or university. Both the ACT (American College Test) and the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) are admission tests. A student may choose to take one or both of these assessments. However, it should be noted that the University of Wisconsin System has historically preferred scores from the ACT assessment as part of its entrance requirements. Also, to qualify for some scholarships a student may be required to submit an ACT or SAT score.

Students may register for either test online at the address below or using the registration materials they can pick up in the Counseling Office.

ACT - actstudent.org SAT - collegeboard.com

A few important facts about these tests that may be helpful for you to know: The ACT has an optional writing test. It is important for students to check online at actstudent.org prior to registering to take the test, to see if the college(s) they plan on applying to requires the writing test. Not all schools require this test. The SAT also has a writing section to its test, however it is included as part of the test and all students who take the SAT will take the writing component. Both testing companies indicate that applying online expedites registration for the test.

**Please go the Counseling website for free online test preparation materials.

On page nine you will find the dates for testing.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF JUNIORS

The PSAT/NMSQT® exam will be offered at Wausau West on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Students may sign up in the Business Office, or online via the Parent Portal with a credit card by September 18th. The cost of the test is $18.00. The pur- pose of the PSAT (practice SAT) is to give students an opportunity to experience taking a college readiness test and to identify students who might benefit from advanced coursework.

By taking the PSAT in 11th grade, all students have the opportunity to qualify for participation in the National Merit Scholarship Program. PSAT/NMSQT® scores are used as initial screen of entrants to the Na- tional Merit Scholarship Program, which recognizes outstanding aca- demic achievement by U.S. high school students.

Students must be in good academic standing, have good attendance, and take responsibility to ar- range missed work and class time from taking the test on October 16th.

COSTA RICAN ADVENTURE MARCH 21-29, 2020 The outdoor Adventure Club led by Mrs. Gerstenberger is plan- ning another global adventure trip. This trip during Spring Break of 2020 will include adventures that are a once in a lifetime oppor- tunity for your child. Global learning encourages awareness and critical thinking about issues. It takes information learned in the classroom to the outside world. It provides an authentic experi- ence with practicing Spanish while staying overnight with Costa Rican families and learning about their food and culture. We will stay at world class lodges in the mountains and go rafting on one of the most scenic rivers in the world. Students will experience up close and personal tropical wildlife through jungle hikes and snorkeling trips. One night we will stay in a cave behind a beautiful waterfall. This cave is designed for sleeping and even has its own kitch- en. The next morning when we awake, we will repel down a 100 foot waterfall.

If you have any questions or would like the detailed itinerary, please contact Mrs. Gerstenberger at Wausau West or email [email protected].

There is a limit number of spaces available see Mrs. Gerstenberger as soon as possible.

A PATH TO SUCCESS FOR AP STUDENTS

The College Board is implementing changes to the timeline for all Ad- vanced Placement courses in 2019-2020. Registration for the test along with payment has been moved to the fall. According to the Col- lege Board and pilot schools, students who commit to taking the test earlier in the year are more apt to earn college credit. Also included in the updates are added online resources for AP students and teachers.

Testing will still take place in early May 2020.

If your child is enrolled in an AP level class, they will be asked to create a College Board account in the fall. This will allow access to online resources and to register for the spring AP exam. Cost for the exams are:

Type Description Cost per Exam

On-time order Exam ordered and paid for by $98 November 8th

Late order Exam ordered and paid for $98 plus $40 late fee* between November 9 and March 11th

Unused or canceled exam Exam canceled or not taken $40 by the student

*Note: Classes that only run second semester will not be subject to the $40.00 late order fee.

CWIMMA WELDING COMPETITION - MAY 2019

At the annual CWIMMA Welding Competition banquet and awards ceremony, two Wausau West students, Daw- son Nowak and Phoenix Somers, represented themselves and Wausau West High School very well.

Out of thirty-two competitors from sixteen schools, Daw- son came in with a fifth-place finish and Phoenix came in with a second-place finish. Wausau West was the only school to place both competitors in the top five, which was good enough to earn West the over all top prize for best high school combined score. As a result, West won a new welder for the shop, as well as the traveling trophy for the year. Phoenix won a torch kit along with other tools and a scholarship to NTC or Mid-State Technical College. Dawson also won tools and a scholarship to NTC or Mid-State Technical College. Dawson and Phoenix also represented West for the Machine Tool Competition which was hosted by CWIMMA. Out of ten competitors at five schools, Phoenix took tenth-place and Dawson took fifth-place. Each received scholar- ships for this as well. Combined, Phoenix brought home $2000.00 in scholarships and Dawson took home $1500.00 in scholarships. These young men certainly deserve all the credit and recognition and made us all be proud to be a Warrior!

STATE SKILLSUSA 2019 COMPETITION Wausau West took ten competitors, who competed in six different events at the 2019 State SkillsUSA Com- petition in Madison at the Alliant Energy Center April 30 - May 1.

Three students competed in the Sheet Metal contest which required a lot of time and hard work figuring out the layout patterns for some complex transition pieces in duct work, as well as then making the parts.

Cade Amsrud came in fifth-place, Dawson Nowak seventh, and Kyler Anklam (who made the podium last year with a third-place finish) came in ninth-place this year.

Three students competed as a team in the Team Engineering Challenge event. They include: Dylan Teske,

Tanner Bullman, and Jacob Neumann. Of the over 150 teams in this event, they finished in the top one-third.

Brodie Lone, competed in Automotive Service Technician for the first time as a sophomore and finished right in the middle of fifty competitors.

Adam Nelson, a junior, finished seventh-place in Welding out of fifty competitors.

Finally, Simon Schumacher, a freshman, made the podium with a third-place finish in Precision Machining! This is a very difficult contest, in which many skilled seniors have never placed in the top three.

20 PARENT INFORMATION BUILDING SECURITY

Wausau West will be continuing the procedure of locking all exterior doors between the hours of 7:45 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. during the school days. We are asking all visitors to continue using the Main Office atrium as the school entrance point during the school day.

Our Attendance Office is located directly adjacent to the Main Office. This allows fami- lies to conduct their attendance business directly upon entering the building. This measure should decrease the amount of traffic flowing into the building from visitors during the school day.

Providing a safe and secure environment is a priority at Wausau West. We appreciate your patience, understanding and follow through with these measures to help make West the great school that it is.
