Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships DIVISION I WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2016 Championship 2 History 5 All-Time Results 19 2016 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Georgia wins seventh national title ATLANTA, Ga. --- The Georgia women’s swimming and diving team claimed the program’s seventh national title on Saturday in the NCAA Championships in the McAuley Aquatic Center on the Georgia Tech campus. The Lady Bulldogs finished the newly configured four-day national meet with 414 points to fight off Stanford (395). California came in third with 358 points, followed by Texas A&M (309) and Virginia (264). After the meet, Georgia’s Jack Bauerle was chosen as the National Women’s Coach of the Year for the seventh time. After finishing third and losing their six-year grip on the Southeastern Conference title last month, it was unclear how the Lady Bulldogs would fare at the national meet. Many pundits had Georgia finishing as low as fourth or fifth 100 points out of first in pre-NCAAs evaluations. But it seemed as if every button the Georgia coaches pushed this week paid off with critical points from the swimmers and the diver. “Winning the national championship is a feeling that never gets old,” Bauerle said. “But this one ranks right up there in terms of pure satisfaction. We knew coming in that it was going to be a rugged meet and that it was going to take a near-perfect effort. Our ladies stood up and competed hard. They did everything we asked of them and this is truly a team championship.” The Lady Bulldogs now have won seven NCAA titles, including the 2013, 2014 and 2016 crowns. In the last 18 seasons, Georgia has been first or second at the NCAAs 15 times. Since the inception of the NCAAs in 1982 for women’s swimming and diving, Stanford leads with eight titles, followed by Georgia and Texas with seven each. Olivia Smoliga set the pace on Saturday as she claimed the 100 freestyle title with a time of 46.70. That broke the school record of 47.01 set by Megan Romano in 2012. “The win was huge for our team and that’s all mattered to me,” Smoliga said. “It’s such an honor to swim for this program and to have this opportunity. You get such an adrenaline rush when you’re swimming for your team.” Brittany MacLean finished second in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 15:39.29, while Rachel Zilinskas took 14th in 16:06.74. Annie Zhu took sixth in the 200 breaststroke as she reached the wall in 2:08.18. In the 200 butterfly, Megan Kingsley placed third in 1:53.10 and Hali Flickinger followed in 1:53.32. Needing a top-six effort to take the team crown, the Lady Bulldogs capped the night with the 400 freestyle relay of Smoliga, MacLean, Meaghan Raab and Flickinger coming in second with a time of 3:10.82. 2016 TEAM RESULTS 16. DIVISION I WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2015 Championship 2 History 5 All-Time Results 19 2015 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS California takes its fourth title in the past seven years: Consistency is everything. One national championship is nice, but can be written off as a fluke if if the success is not sustained or predicated. To be in the conversation year in and year out, as Cal women’s swimming and diving head coach Teri McKeever puts it, is the key. For years, McKeever worked to find that success. It came gradually. She was in her seventh year with the Golden Bears before the squad was able to crack the top five in the NCAA Division I national championship meet. It got better, a lot better in fact. Approximately $10 million in donor funds over the year built facilities and scholarship funds suitable for a championship-caliber program. Only once the 2005-06 season has Cal finished as low as fifth in the nationals. And since winning its first national championship in 2009, the Golden Bears have finished no worse than third. “We started to have some success, and I think quality people attract quality people,” McKeever said. “I am very proud of the consistency of the program. To me, that’s the sign of a program ... a philosophy ... a belief ... that a group of women can come in and be their best year after year.” This year’s national crown is Cal’s fourth in the past seven seasons. Consistency? McKeever and the Golden Bears have it all right.

You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme.

POST’S GUIDE to the PAN AM GAMES SWIMMINGSwimming GUIDE TO THE GAMES B Y K AITLYN MC G RATH , NATIONAL POST Venue The CIBC Pan Am / Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House Venue acronym PAC Landmark status Medium Built specifically for the Games, the venue features two Olympic- sized pools, a five-metre diving tank, as well as an indoor track and fitness centre. Once the Games are complete, the facility will be open to the community and students attending nearby U of T Scarborough — and will likely see an increase of pee in its pools. 2 NATIONAL POST GUIDE TO THE GAMES Other events at venue Diving, synchronized swimming, fencing, modern pentathlon, roller speed skating, sitting vol- leyball (Parapan Am) Transit options This trip would normally involve a lot of time on a bus, possibly multiple buses. Fortunately, there is a shuttle — the conveniently named Aquatics Centre Rocket, also known as the 194. It leaves from Don Mills Station (on Line 4) and is non-stop to the Aquatics Centre Loop, a short walk from the venue. Other options: the 198 U of T Scarborough Rocket ex- press bus from Kennedy Station (Line 2); the 95 York Mills from York Mills Station (Line 1); or the 38 Highland Creek bus from 3 NATIONAL POST GUIDE TO THE GAMES Scarborough Centre Station (Line 3) or from the Rouge Hill Go Sta- tion. For drivers, the site is con- veniently located near Highway 401. What this location lacks in downtown convenience it makes up for in downtown prices: Be prepared to shell out $20 for parking in lots G and H at the U of T Scarborough campus.
