Honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther , Jr.

When Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was first observed in 1986, just 14% of employers recognized it as a paid day off. Eight years after, the Congress officially repurposed the third Monday in January as a day of service as well as a federal holiday. This is when the phrase “a day on, not a day off” was coined (AACSU). This presents most Americans with a general call to serve, but also a personal decision on how to fulfill this shared obligation.
