Māpua November 2020 1. Delay of the Māpua Drive shared path 2. Speed limit changes 3. The new Environment Plan – Aorere ki uta, Aorere ki tai 4. Proposed changes to Freedom Camping Bylaw 5. Positive Ageing Expo – registrations open 6. Free dog microchipping

Delay of the Māpua Drive shared path All the recent rain has meant there’ll be a delay on completing the construction of the new path on Māpua Drive. As some of the contractors now have other commitments, we expect the work to be fully complete in the second week of December. The temporary bus stops and arrangements for Māpua students who catch the buses will remain in place. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this will cause. Please remember to slow down and take care around the work site.

Speed limit changes From Tuesday 17 November 2020, the speed limit on sections of Māpua Drive, Seaton Valley Road, and Stafford Drive (as shown in yellow on the map) will change to 50km/h. The change was confirmed following the public consultation carried out in 2019. Other changes consulted on at the time have already taken effect, however this change was held over until we were due to build a new shared path in the area, which is now well underway.

This new limit will make it safer for everyone living in and passing through this area. Signs will be installed to remind everyone of the change.

The new Tasman Environment Plan – Aorere ki uta, Aorere ki tai

Tasman District Council staff and councillors will be out and about this spring seeking your views on our environmental and development issues and opportunities, as we begin work on Aorere ki uta, Aorere ki tai – the new Tasman Environment Plan.

Over October and November, we’re hosting 20 family-friendly community events across the District for you to have your say. Environmental Policy Manager Barry Johnson says community input will shape the direction of the new plan. “This plan will be created in partnership with iwi and our communities over the next couple of years. It will be an important document that will eventually replace our current resource management plans as the blueprint for how we grow as a District and use our land, air, and water.”

Tasman District covers nearly 10,000km2 of diverse landscapes, from large mountainous areas to valleys and plains. Significant rivers such as the Buller, , Aorere, Tākaka, and Wairoa move through the land and flow to lakes and estuaries, transporting valuable freshwater on their journey. There is native bush and bird life, deep caves, golden sand beaches, productive farmlands and horticulture, and good fishing in our bays and rivers.

The Tasman Environment Plan will help look after these treasures through policies and rules covering air and water quality, biodiversity, climate change and natural hazards, and how we use our rural areas, coast and towns.

Proposed changes to Freedom Camping Bylaw Submissions are invited until 16 November on some proposed amendments to the Freedom Camping Bylaw 2017. These include:

 Removal of the Waitapu Bridge site – Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is taking over control of the area and we no longer have jurisdiction for freedom camping.  Removal of the Taupata Gravel Reserve – due to continued concerns with danger to nesting birds and difficulties with effective policing.  Removal of the Waikoropupū Springs Road Reserve – area now under Department of Conservation control and Council has no jurisdiction.  Addition of a new area on the former Rototai Tip site.  Amending the location of the site on Decks Reserve to accommodate the new library construction.  Amending the permitted camping area at Alexander Bluff Road Reserve to identify more precisely the area where camping is allowed.

You can read the full statement of proposal online at tasman.govt.nz/feedback or see a hard copy at Council offices and libraries in Tākaka, Richmond, Motueka and Murchison.

While these changes are specifically for Golden Bay, this is open to all residents to provide feedback about the Freedom Camping Bylaw.
