Retrospektive Georg Wilhelm Pabst gilt Pabst, zusammen mit Fritz Lang, F.W. Murnau und Ernst Lubitsch als einer der großen Regisseure des deutschen Stummfilms. Und trotzdem ist ein Kapitel in der Monografie, die 1997 anlässlich der Pabst-Retros- pektive in Berlin erschien, mit »Der große Unbekannte« überschrieben. Man kennt seine Klassiker, aber nicht all seine Filme. Auch das macht es schwer, so etwas wie Homogenität im Pabst-Œuvre zu entdecken. Pabsts Filmografie ist uneben. Rückblende. Georg Wilhelm Pabst wird am 27. Au- gust 1885 im böhmischen Raudnitz (heute Roudnice nad Labem) geboren. Er wächst in Wien auf, nimmt dort am Staatlichen Konservatorium zwei Jahre lang Schauspielunterricht und erhält 1904 sein erstes En- gagement am Kurtheater Baden bei Zürich. 1910 geht er in die USA, um in New York und anderen Städten an deutschsprachigen Theatern zu spielen. Als er 1914 während des Ausbruchs des Ersten Weltkrieges nach Europa zurückkehren will, wird er auf dem hol- ländischen Dampfer »New Amsterdam« von der fran- zösischen Marine als feindlicher Ausländer verhaftet.
