Connecting School and Home

Dear Parents and Guardians, As summer break swiftly approaches, many parents often wonder what the options are for teenagers outside of athletics or working a job. I would urge you to consider having your student do some volunteer work. According to Shobha Bhaskar, MD (www.childrensmd.org), teens who volunteer often have a greater sense of gratitude and empathy for those less fortunate. It teaches them that helping others can increase their own joy and self-worth, especially in a world with so many negative influences. It can also teach them some necessary job skills like leadership, communication skills, dependability, time management and decision making. Research also states that students who volunteer perform better in school and build a stronger college resume and it can help them earn more scholarship money. Some ways that your student can volunteer are through organizations like the Special Olympics. Students can also do volunteer work at local hospitals, animal shelters and nursing homes. There are also many churches that offer volunteer opportunities. Students can also do volunteer work by simply mowing an elderly neighbors’ yard or helping out a grandparent. We are so fortunate at Woodlan to have such terrific and caring students. I believe that they can make an enormous impact in our community if given the opportunity to volunteer a little bit of their time. I encourage you to talk to your student as summer break approaches and see if there are any ways that they can help out others. I hope that everyone has a safe and wonderful summer break. A special congratulations to all of the members of the class of 2019. I wish all of you the very best that life has to offer. Thank you for all of your support this school year. I look forward to seeing everyone in August.

Sincerely, Ms. Michelle Rodgers Assistant Principal

As we continue promoting sportsmanship at Woodlan.

Knute Rockne may have said it best: “One man practicing sportsmanship is far better than a hundred teaching it.”

THE TEAM COMES FIRST The team always comes first at our high school.

With traveling teams and club sports, it’s all about the playing time and individual achievement.

But if your son or daughter plays a sport for our high school, it’s important to understand that decisions about strategy, depth charts, and playing time are based on what’s best for the team—not the individual. And what’s best for the team is a decision that the coach, and the coach alone, is responsible for making.

One of the most important lessons that high school sports teach is that personal glory is not nearly as important as team success.

Be an important member of our team by always supporting our school’s coaching staffs.

Guidance Department

Summer is almost here, which means a drastic change of daily schedule for all of our students. While the faculty/staff of Woodlan recognize the importance of students taking a break after a rigorous and tiring school year, we would also encourage each student to see the summer as an opportunity to take a meaningful step toward their future. There are a wide variety of ways students can engage in this process, ranging from enrolling in a summer camp at a local college or non-profit organization, to finding an internship or job shadowing experience in a field they are interested in, to taking a college visit, to acquiring a job that will allow them to earn and save money for the next step post high school. If you would like your student to engage in one of these types of activity and need some help identifying options, please feel free to call the Guidance Office, and we will do our best to assist you.

Join us in celebrating the graduation of the class of 2019!

Agriculture / Business

Agriculture Education The Agriculture Education Department along with the Woodlan FFA Chapter just completed the annual Kindergarten Tours in conjunction with Heritage Jr/Sr High School. This event allows our students to teach kindergarteners about all aspects of the farm. The kids are taught about farm animals, equipment and plants. This year we were blessed to offer the tours to over 1600 students from 21 area schools!

The Introduction to Agriculture Classes have been learning about meat, grain and dairy production. They have worked hard throughout the week to apply their knowledge in the kitchen on Fridays. They have made ice cream, pasta and edible cookie dough.

As the school year comes to a close, we will be finishing the year in the woodshop. The junior high students will be making clocks and string art. The freshman class will be applying their knowledge of trajectory in the construction of catapults. We will have a competition the last week of school to see which catapult design throws a ball the furthest.

Business Education This semester in Careers the students participated in the Junior Achievement “Tell Us about your Dream Career” essay contest. Each student wrote a 1 – 2 page essay about their dream career. We will have 1 guaranteed winner from Woodlan. The student with the winning essay will receive $100 dollars and an opportunity to job shadow their dream career. Congratulations to Michael Crilly for writing the winning essay! In the junior high setting, the Digital Citizenship class just completed a stop motion animation project. Students had to recreate a fairy tale using Stop Motion Animation. Students were able to create the animations using Google slides and the results were amazing.
