Vol. VI No. 36 EDITORIAL DESK

As we close the door to another full cycle of 365 days which has been a year full of gifts of surprises, dreams and grieves to the University of Maiduguri, we wish to thank the management of the University and our distinguished readers whose inspirational catalysts had propelled us to greater heights. Early in the year 2018, the management of the University of Maiduguri initiated the impetus to set the standard for re- search and educational facilities where the next generation of scientists will be trained, and the next para- digm-shifting breakthrough will be made. In the first quarter of the year, the University held its 23rd Com- bined Convocation Ceremony in April, a monumental event where 17,895 graduated from postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. Worth remembering is the appointment of three professors emeriti at that event - Emeritus Professor Abdulhamid Abubakar, Emeritus Professor John Akinniyi and Emeritus Professor Joseph Alumona Ijere. As the University of Maiduguri evolves to meet the changing needs of its society, its commitment to the academic excellence remains constant in order to enhance the teaching, learning and re- search environment and meet the needs of both staff and students in emerging areas of high demand. Dur- ing the year 2018, glorious achievements had been witnessed in the University driven by the outstanding efforts of the hardworking Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim A. Njodi and his management team. Numerous projects were commissioned with the Senate building named after President Muhammadu Buhari in July. The commencement of the MoU between Unimaid and Africa International University, Sudan and the signing of several other MoU opened the horizon for both staff and students to experience cross fertilization of ideas in a mutually symbiotic relationship. To the glory of Unimaid, two of its staff namely Professor Babagana Umara Zulum and Professor David Malgwi were recognised and elected as the governorship candidate and appointed acting Vice Chancellor of the Nigerian Army University, Biu respectively. These are priceless gifts to us in the Uni- versity community and we hope the New Year 2019 will bring in more happy surprises. Though mainly a happy year for the University, it ended on a sad note. Many of our beloved members of staff and students dropped from the train of life during the year. Such a monumental loss shook the Universi- ty and woke us all to the reality, inevitability and unexpectedness of death. In this issue, we take you through the proceedings of the 42nd MBBS and 9th BDS attestation ceremonies of the University. The partnership and linkage between Unimaid and IUA, Sudan is strengthened as academics from IUA depart after intensive training at the Department of English. The edition also highlights the activi- ties at the 4th annual workshop of the North-East Biotechnology Centre of Excellence, while the Non- Academic Staff Union of Universities refunds over-deductions from loans given to members, amongst several other stories that will give the reader a pleasant reading experience.
