Contains details of the many and varied decisions taken by the House Committee in the period leading up to World War 2 and during the war itself. A remarkable feature of this record is the apparent inability of some members of the Club to recognise and accept that the war had an inevitable effect on the way in which the Club was run. 1 Volume LONDON METROPOLITAN ARCHIVES Page 15 ARMY AND NAVY CLUB

LMA/4179/01/05/01/006 Signed minute book 1946 May- Not available for general access Typed, signed and indexed 1962 Mar

Contains details of the many and varied decisions taken by the House Committee following World War 2 . The minutes reveal the difficulties facing the Club in re-establishing pre war standards especially in connection with: the maintenance of the Club house; the quality and variety of food served; the incidence of complaints which seemed to disregard the fact that food rationing was still in place; the reintroduction of the facility to allow regimental dinners to be held; shortages of towels and linen ...etc. All these matters were symptomatic of a nation recently at war during the course of which the Club house had sustained significant structural damage and the various services (water supply, electricity, heating ...etc) had been subjected to heavy usage without the facility of spares essential for maintenance. The minutes record that Practical Catering Systems Ltd were tasked with carrying out a catering review. 1 Volume

LMA/4179/01/06/01/006 Signed minute book 1945 Aug - Including: reports by the Librarian, 1972 Nov recommendations for the purchasing and sale of books, book donations and losses.

Includes reference to books relating to the Second World War including several volumes of war speeches by Winston Churchill, "El Alamein to the Baltic" by Field Marshal, Viscount Montgomery and "Bomber Offensive" by Sir Arthur Harris. Books by Oscar Wilde, Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Kennedy were also added to the collection. A number of books on shooting and fishing were also purchased to reflect Member's interests. The redecoration of the Library in 1951 prompted the disposal of valuable books including Gould's "Humming-Birds" and "Birds of Australia" and the disposal of unwanted books to a University in Japan where there was a thirst for knowledge about England. The rebuilding of the Club in 1959 -1962 resulted in a major upheaval for the Library since the collection had to be reduced from about 8,000 to 1,500 books. As a result, the major proportion of the collection was sold to Dawsons of Pall Mall including the valuable "Arabian Nights" and a small number of books purchased by Durham University. The Army Lists and Regimental Histories up to 1939 were given to the Army Museum, Ogilby Trust; the Navy Lists to the Maritime Museum, Greenwich and the Royal Air Force Lists to the RAF College, Cranwell. A gift of the "United Services Review", the "Army Review" and the "Army Quaterly Review" was made to the National Army Museum and the library ladders and bookcases were also disposed of. The Library was to be housed in the Mixed Card Room of the new building with the catalogue set out in alphabetical order and lending arrangements were made so Members could take the books to their bedrooms. A collection of letters dating from the early 19th century found in an old stationery cupboard during the move to temporary premises was valued by Sothebys who decided that, although by famous men, they were not particularly valuable so they were given to the National Army Museum and the Maritime Museum. A letter written in 1809 by the Bishop of Nova Scotia was given to Lambeth Palace. 1 volume LONDON METROPOLITAN ARCHIVES Page 23 ARMY AND NAVY CLUB

Includes references to the purchase of naval and military history books interspersed with a mixture of biography, autobiography including books by Alexander Solzhenistyn, David Niven and Peter Ustinov, popular fiction by Frederick Forsyth and Graham Greene and books on various sports including "Sailing" by Edward Heath.

The major problem concerning the Librarian was the return of overdue books and the fines were increased in order to encourage Club members to return them promptly. The supply of new books from Dawsons was also too slow so they were replaced as suppliers by Truslove & Hanson who provided a higher discount and faster delivery. 1 File

LMA/4179/01/06/01/008 Minutes 1980 Feb - Including: reports by the Librarian, 1982 Sep recommendations for the purchasing and sale of books, book donations and losses.

The magazines retained for the Ladies Drawing Room include Vogue, Tatler, Country Life and the Lady.

The aims of the Library include providing books of general appeal (although paperbacks will not be purchased) as well as those of social and historical value in order to encourage more usage of the Library. Reference is made to the purchase of biographies including those of Ronald Reagan, Freddie Laker and the Duchess of Windsor. The books of James Herriot are popular with members.
