John Redman was born in Belfast and educated at Campbell College, Belfast and Aston University, Birmingham He has held various posts in human resources and general management with Glaxo, Fisons, Booker, Novo Nordisk and Merck prior to relocating to Hull in 2010 as Group Managing Director of Merck Consumer Healthcare and Managing Director of Seven Seas Ltd. John has 18 years’ experience as a Governor of a Church of Primary School in East Sussex and 8 years as a Governor of Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School in Kent with an interest in finance, facilities and health and safety. He is married to Val with 3 grown up children.

Mike Astell was born in Hull and educated at Hymers College and Imperial College. He has held various industrial leadership roles covering operations, projects, corporate and general management in the UK and overseas, and most recently was Managing Director and Regional Director for Centrica. Mike has a number of years in senior governance roles both as an executive, non-executive director and through involvement with industry and educational bodies. He has a strong commitment to education having been involved in a range of industry and education initiatives.

MRS SAMEERA ANWAR WEST LLB LLM Appointed December 2017 Committee: Academic

Sameera Anwar West was educated at the University of Leicester and the Université Robert Schuman (Strasbourg III). She is a Senior European Employment lawyer and has served in-house in a variety of organisations and industries including over a decade with Warner Bros. Entertainment (Europe). Sameera is currently working as a freelance employment legal consultant specialising in anti-bullying/anti-harrassment training and diversity & inclusion. Sameera is a Hull resident and also works with arts organisations in the area including Hull UK City of Culture. 1

MR P ADRIAN B BEECROFT BSc MA MBA FInstP Appointed: February 2008

Adrian Beecroft was educated at Hymers College, the University of (Physics) and Harvard Business School. He worked initially in the computer industry and then in strategy consulting, becoming Vice President of the Boston Consulting Group. In the early 1980s he helped to found Apax Partners, which was initially a venture capital investor but more recently has focused on private equity transactions. He retired from his position as Senior Managing Partner of Apax. Adrian is the joint sponsor of an school in Oxford and is the sponsor of the Beecroft Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at the , where he is an Honorary Fellow of Queen's College. For six years he was the Chairman of Chance to Shine, a charity aimed at bringing cricket back to state schools, and is now a Trustee of the MCC.

PROFESSOR GLENN BURGESS BA MA PhD FRHistS Appointed: December 2012 Committee: Academic (Chair)

Glenn Burgess was educated at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and the University of Cambridge. His academic career for over 30 years has included various posts as University Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) of the University of Hull. He is currently Professor of Early Modern History. Glenn has experience in strategic planning, financial management and budgeting and is a member of the University Council. Glenn also sits on the Hull2017 City of Culture Board. His son attended Hymers College.

JOHN F CONNOLLY BSc Appointed: December 2016 Committees: Finance and Property Lead Responsibility: IT / Digital

John Connolly was born in Beverley and educated at Hymers College, Dundee University, and Newcastle University where he studied Computer Science. He has extensive experience of setting up technology businesses and taking them from concept through to profitability. He is Co-Founder and Managing Director of C4DI (The Centre for Digital Innovation) based in Hull. C4DI is a privately funded technology incubator helping tech companies grow and traditional businesses innovate. Alongside this he sits on the boards of a number of tech start-ups and acts as a non-exec director for a couple of charities. He is married to Kathryn and has two sons.

MR DOMINIC A GIBBONS BSc MRICS Appointed: December 2010 Committees: Finance and Property (Chair – Property), Remuneration Lead Responsibility: Capital Projects Working Group

Born in Hull, Dominic Gibbons attended Hymers College between 1979 and 1989. After completing his degree in Estate Management in 1992 he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor whilst working for a National firm of Surveyors based in .

He joined the Hull based Wykeland Group in late 1996, became a Director of its main subsidiary in 1999, joined the Board of the Group in 2004 and became Group Managing Director in July 2009. Wykeland are a property development investment company based in Hull but with a commercial property portfolio stretching from Grimsby to Glasgow. The main operational area is the Yorkshire and Humber region, where the business has a £400M development programme. Dominic also sits as a Lay Member of the University of Hull’s Council and Finance and Investment Committee, Chairs a Charity called Run With It and is a Trustee of Holy Trinity Church Developments Limited. Dominic is married to Alex with 2 young children. Pastimes are limited to skiing, road cycling and a season pass holder for Hull City – when children’s weekend activities permit!

MR WILLIAM (BILL) H GORE BSc MSc PhD ACA Appointed: December 2012 Committees: Governance, Nominations

Bill Gore is an Old Hymerian and was educated afterwards at Queen Mary College, London and Aston University. He qualified as both a Chartered Engineer with British Gas and a Chartered Accountant with what is now PWC. Forsaking corporate life, he has become an industrial Investor Chairman in a wide range of companies in the UK, Europe and North America. Bill chaired the Council at Essex University for 5 years and is currently on the Governing body of Coram, the oldest known Children’s Charity in the world, and the Foundling Museum. Bill also sits on the University of Essex Knowledge Gateway Board.

MRS GLENDA A GREENDALE Appointed: October 2001 Committees: Academic, Pastoral (Chair), Nominations, Governance Lead Responsibility: Safeguarding

Glenda Greendale was educated in Hull and left school after A Levels to join Marks and Spencer as a Management Trainee. Her final post with the Company was in the Personnel Department in York. She left Marks and Spencer to bring up a family and has since worked for various voluntary organisations, in particular as Schools Fundraising Co-ordinator for the NSPCC. In 2017, Glenda retired from working with Special Needs children in the Primary and Nursery Sectors. She is on the Governing Body of a local primary school. Her husband is an Old Hymerian (1961-67) and her children all attended Hymers College.

MR MARTIN C S HALL BSc Appointed: February 2008 Committees: Health and Safety, Finance and Property Lead Responsibility: Health and Safety

Martin Hall was educated at Hymers College. He joined the British Army in 1975 and was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1976. He left the Army in the rank of Captain in 1987, his last posting being in Oman. Prior to this he saw service in a variety of roles in Kenya, Germany, Northern Ireland, the Falkland Islands and Brunei. He studied Civil Engineering at The Royal Military College of Science and joined his family’s construction business based in Hull. He now owns and Chairs a Joinery Manufacturing business and is a Trustee of various charities. 3

He is a great advocate of review, adapt and monitor to ensure businesses and organisations stay at the head of their game and are best placed to be able to deal with the challenges put in their way. He has 3 grown up children, 2 of whom have also benefited from a Hymers education. He continues to be involved with The Old Hymerians’ Association and was its President in 2008/9. His hobbies include long distance running/walking/hobbling, skiing, motorbike touring and field sports.

MR JONATHAN G LEAFE Appointed: July 2016 Committees: Finance and Property, Health and Safety Lead Responsibility: Marketing

Jonathan Leafe was born in Beverley and attended Hymers College. After leaving school he was a professional musician for four years before working for the family firm. Following a posting overseas to Spain, he changed work direction and on his return to the UK joined an Advertising Agency. Three further years in Southern Spain followed and on his final return to the UK in 1989 he set up his own Marketing Agency. He finally exited the business, Strawberry, in 2017 and is now pursuing a third career as a consultant to other Marketing Agencies around the UK and Ireland. He became involved with Hymers in 2006 as a Business advisor to their Young Enterprise programme with some success and was appointed President of the Old Hymerians’ Association in 2017.

MRS ELIZABETH A MALIAKAL LLB Appointed: June 2017 Committees: Academic, Pastoral

Elizabeth Maliakal was born and educated in Hull. She attended the University of Newcastle upon Tyne to study Law and then completed the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law, York. She returned to Hull to train as a Solicitor qualifying in 1998. Having worked in the North East of England and as an in-house Solicitor in Leeds, she now works in private practice in East Yorkshire specialising in medical litigation. Outside work, as well as being a governor at Hymers College, she is a regular volunteer for a charity providing free legal advice. Elizabeth is married to Paul and has 2 children who attend the senior school at Hymers College

MR CHRISTOPHER M “KIT” READ MA (Oxon) MRICS Appointed: March 2012 Committee: Finance and Property Committee

Kit Read was educated at Hymers College. He read History at Magdalen College, Oxford and then studied Rural Estate Management at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester. After qualifying as a chartered surveyor in Derbyshire, he spent eleven years as Deputy Agent then Agent with the Grosvenor Estate in Cheshire and Lancashire, before joining The Brocklesby Estate in Lincolnshire as Managing Director in 2008. He has 20 years’ experience of rural and urban estate and property management, also encompassing accounting, finance, personnel and recruitment, legal and charity work. For 10 years, Kit has been a Governor of maintained primary schools, a Trustee and Clerk of several charities, and a parish Councillor for 2 village councils. He is married to Sally and has two young sons who both attend Hymers. His interests are hunting, fishing, stalking and shooting. 4

John Robinson was educated at Bolton School and the University of Hull (BA Hons). He was elected to as a member for Avenue Ward in 1999, serving his community for 16 years. In July 2012, he was made an Honorary Alderman of the City of . John is a serving member of the Army Reserve. With his wife Sarita, he is a foster carer for Hull City Council. His brother-in-law and sister-in-law both attended Hymers College

Nicki is a Chartered Accountant and equity partner in a local independent accountancy firm, Smailes Goldie. She has worked there for the last 21 years having trained and qualified with the firm after completing her A levels at . Nicki is a keen horse-rider and netballer.

MRS GEMMA V VICKERMAN BSc MSc MRICS Appointed: December 2015 Committees: Finance and Property, Governance, Nominations

Gemma Vickerman (nee Edwardson) is an Old Hymerian who attended the school between 1997-2003. Gemma’s personal highlights include Captaining Hymers 1st XI Hockey and becoming a Senior Prefect in her final year.

Gemma studied Land Management at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester and continued as a Graduate with Savills, qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor in 2006. She specialises in Planning having completed a Masters in Town Planning at Newcastle University and is a Licentiate Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. Gemma is a Director of the family business, Edwardson Associates, and runs a small team of Planners, Architects and Chartered Surveyors. Gemma is married to an Old Hymerian, Rob (retired rugby England 7s Captain) and they have two young children. Together they enjoy sporting activities and the outdoors.

Jamie Wheldon was educated at Hymers College between 1975 and 1985. He is a Chartered Surveyor with experience at leading global firms. He also has ten years’ experience in commercial real estate finance and banking. He is presently a Partner at a boutique firm of surveyors in Harrogate covering the whole of the UK and Europe. He brings broad experience of property and finance to his role as a Governor. His leisure interests include walking, cycling and alpine skiing. He is a volunteer for the charity Pets as Therapy and a former trustee of the RSPCA in East Yorkshire.

Peter Wildsmith was educated at Hymers College and qualified as a Solicitor. He recently retired from his role as a District Judge based at York County Court. His son was also educated at the school.
