TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

REFLECTIONS ON SCRIPTURE

September 15th Twenty-Fourth SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME What a blessing it is when we find what we’ve lost, what we feared we might never see again. Today’s readings feature stories of just such blessings: a coin, a sheep, a people. All could easily have been written off, but all are found, welcomed back, forgiven. In Exodus, the Lord wants to strike down the Israelites who turned to a golden calf. convinces God that these people who had been rescued from captivity, who were linked to and , were worth saving. The Lord relented. In the CATECHETICAL SUNDAY Gospel, the shepherd rescues the sheep that wandered off, the woman searches for the coin that was lost, and the father lavishly welcomes home his wayward son. “Those who the Community has designated to serve as Catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for “Rejoice,” each of them calls out to friends and neighbors, their ministry. Catechectical Sunday is a wonderful for what was lost has been found. The scribes and opportunity to reflect on the role that each person Pharisees would have considered the effort a waste of plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and time. They complained that Jesus spent his time with being a witness to the Gospel. Catechectical Sunday is those who lived in sin. That is the point, Jesus says, for it an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.” USCCB is the repentant sinner who brings joy to God. St. Joseph ~ St. Raphael Recovery Gathering

"While I breathe, I hope.” St Andrew Wednesday, September 18th 10am—noon

THIS IS A LOCATION CHANGE- The monthly Recovery Gathering has begun meeting at

Villa Park Apartment Activity Room, 1350 Vester Ave, Spfld 45503. This is a handicap accessible facility!

The mission of the Recovery Gatherings are to encourage, support and walk with those seeking to recover from addiction and mental illness and those who love them. There are many programs and people who can help with recovery but it is often hard to take the 1st step to identify and accept the problem. It is also hard to accept that recovery may be a difficult and ongoing process that does not end. That is why we need to support and encourage each other. The meeting is open to all. Fires in the Amazon Letter From Sr Jane at Our Twin Parish St Lucy received August 26, 2019 Dear Norm and all at St Joseph & St Raphael Parish, boa noite. Thank you for your note and concern. We understand your suffering because of the deaths in Dayton. We too have many assassinations among our people here. The violence is overwhelming. It is still raining in our area, so the fires are not threatening yet. Though someone set fire to our St. Raphael Center that you helped us build where Sr Dorothy Stang is buried. Yesterday we spent 4 hours battling the flames. The Altamira area is under fire as is our area because of illegal logging. The president encouraged it. Now we and the earth are suffering the consequences. Our people still defend the forest em pé...with her creatures and biodiversity. Hold us in prayer as we do you. Much love, jane

Bom dia! Today we are in Altamira for the Public Ministry. The checkpoints in the PDS Esperança that prohibit loggers entering and leaving will be closed as of Saturday. The Esperanza settlement was created by Sister Dorothy Stang, as a way of counteracting the destruction of the forest by loggers. These sites place a strong emphasis on forest conservation. Settlers can grow their individual plots, but not sell them. The two settlements are giving good results, but - in large part because they have not been fully supported by the authorities - they have not been imitated throughout the region, as Sister Dorothy would have liked. Sr Dorothy was killed in PDS Esperanza in 2005 by gunmen sent by landowners. The situation is critical. Every year there are fires in St. Raphael. Some seem to be planted, others are a result of cigarette butts or the drought. Sunday seems to have been planted. Dorothy is buried in St. Raphael. St. Raphael is a symbol of the peoples´struggle. Saturday we had a big meeing. But we are trying to secure easier access to water and more protection. It is the world we live in. Take care...and thanks for your presence in our lives. abraços da jane Note Sr Jane and the people of St Lucy’s have asked us to help repair the St Raphael Center and add a kitchen so people who come to meet and gather can be fed. This year our Advent Alms cans donations will be used for this. For more specific information on what is happening in St Lucy’s area google “How This Brazilian City Became Ground Zero For The Amazon’s Deforestation Crisis”

However, if the person is able to swallow, it is recommended that they receive the Eucharist as Viaticum. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick ought to be celebrated at the beginning of the illness. Viaticum is to be celebrated when death is close. The Eucharist, given as Viaticum, is food for the passage through death to eternal life. A priest, deacon lay Eucharistic Minister may give Viaticum to the dying person. Please call the parish office at 323-7523. After hours, please call the office number and follow the prompts for the emergency call number.

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE THAT IS HOMEBOUND- Please let us know We sent out 91 gift bags to those from our parish that cannot join us on Sundays at Easter. They are always very touched by the gifts, the cards and the visits. Many of these people also receive the Eucharist in their home or in the facility where they live. They can also have a bulletin mailed to them.

Do you know of anyone that is not able to come to Mass that we need to add to our list? Would you like to be one of our volunteers that take Eucharist to the homebound of the parish?
