I can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Somerset County Council (SCC).
Question 1 The names of the schools in your county that contain asbestos.
Answer 1 Please see the below list. Please note that these 264 schools have asbestos in some form, and covers all schools in Somerset, and not just SCC schools.
Some of the 264 schools have very little asbestos material, and it may be just a small amount in flooring or on a roof.
The date supplied is the date the last Management Survey was completed.
Asbestos is present in many buildings, including schools, constructed across the country, constructed before 1999. It is considered safe by the Health and Safety Executive so long as it is known about, maintained in a good condition and not disturbed.
All Somerset schools that were the responsibility of Somerset County Council were surveyed in the mid-1990s to identify any asbestos, check its condition and ensure that it is safe. Since then, there has been a rolling scheme of re-surveying, visiting schools to update the survey and highlight any actions that should be taken.

Question 2 The date and outcome of the last independent audit or inspection of each of these schools Asbestos Management Plans.
Answer 2 We do not hold this information. This is because schools complete their own asbestos management plans as asbestos has to be managed locally at each school. We do not hold any record of audits that these have been completed or reviewed.

Schools have a designated person responsible for carrying out an annual check of their readily accessible asbestos materials and making sure that staff are aware of the location of any asbestos in the building. This annual check is administered by the SCC Health & Safety Unit. Any concerns schools can be reported to SCC Asbestos Team who can offer specialist advice or visit site to inspect materials as necessary.
SCC schools have access to the council policy and guidance on management of asbestos materials within their buildings. Academies/Trust/VA schools are responsible for producing their own management plan. Although again the SCC Asbestos Team is on hand to provide guidance should it be requested.
Question 3 The details of any reported incidents of asbestos exposure in these schools between 2011 and 2016.
Answer 3 None, as we have not received any reports of asbestos exposure in the years requested.
Question 4 Details of any improvement or prohibition notice served or guidance issued by the HSE in relation to the management of asbestos in schools in your county in the last 5 years.
Answer 4 None, as we have not received any communication from the HSE on management of asbestos in schools over the last five years.
Question 5 The number of school employees (existing and retired staff to include teaching staff, school support staff and caretakers, etc) and ex-pupils that have pursued a claim against you for exposure to asbestos within a school in your county.
Answer 5 I can confirm that the answer is less than five. We will not be providing you with a specific number, as this could lead to identification of individuals. We are relying on exemption Section 40 (2) of the FOIA, which relates to information that is exempt where that information could identify a person, and it would be unfair for that information to be disclosed.
Question 6 The number of these claims that have been settled.
Answer 6 Less than five. Please refer to answer five above for further information.
Question 7 The amount of money that has been paid in settlement of these claims (with and without your authority accepting responsibility).
Answer 7 Somerset County Council has paid out £9,030 in settlement of any claims regarding exposure to asbestos.
