Continued……...WHAT GOES ON IN SWINDERBY? CHOPS Central Heating Oil Purchasing Scheme is a simple organisation designed to save us all some money on our central heating oil. I collect orders about 6 times a year. On my buying day, I get the best price possible and advise everyone where the oil is coming from and the current price. The saving comes from the bulk delivery into the village which normally means at least one full tanker load and 25+ deliveries. Payment depends on the supplier, but the worst scenario is that they phone for a debit card prior to delivery (they all charge a premium for Credit Cards). I do not handle any payment and have no vested interest in any oil company. If you run out of oil between deliveries, you can make your own arrangements and I am not in the least bit offended. The whole enterprise is 100% above board and I make or gain nothing from running CHOPS (apart from a few headaches usually related to deliveries!) If you want to 'join' just let me have name, address and post code as well as your phone number and I will add you to my list. Please note the minimum oil delivery is 500 litres (as designated by the oil suppliers). You will find forward delivery dates and other information in the Linkup. Call David Gardiner 868

Church News

Hello everyone,

First, on a personal note, can I thank the many people who sent me good wishes while I was off work with pneumonia, the messages meant a great deal, and helped getting better. Also, can I publicly thank Rev Fran Hinton for stepping in to cover an extra wedding and baptism, other members of our ministry team stepped up to take extra services, and their support and assistance saved me a great deal of worry.

With September we start our round of Harvest Festivals. This fits in with a period of the church year where we particularly think about creation. Harvest is a time we give thanks for the bounty of the earth, in feeding us and so many other things. It also reminds us of the huge challenges we face in seeking how to care for the environment. So often the way many protagonists handle the environmental debate, many of our farmers end up feeling blamed. When in fact all they are seeking to do is meet our demands for a rich variety of food. The majority of the farmers I have met, are challenged by meeting both our food demands, and the need to care for our environment. I recently read an article in which the National Farmers Union were saying that unless we take serious action our soil has no more than 100 harvests left in it. So over the harvest period give thanks for “All God’s Gifts”, but also give thanks for our farming industry as it faces up to the dual challenge of feeding us, and caring for a major part of creation.

I am sure you will have read of the excellent work undertaken by Foodbanks, in providing a safety net for those in financial adversity. I would like to re-introduce the concept of harvest parcels presented at our harvest services, and suggest these are made up of non -perishable food items that can be taken to the Lincoln Foodbank. At some point in the service people will be asked to bring their gift up to the altar.

For our harvest services this year we have a number of guest preachers, so please come and give thanks, and reflect on the big questions before us.

As I write these notes Lincoln have won their first game in League 1, but there is a long way to go to safety, and whatever lies beyond.

As ever Andrew Swinderby Church Harvest Festival Friday 20th September 6:30pm Service followed by buffet supper All Welcome (& collection for Lincoln Foodbanks, non-perishables)

. Notes From A Small Parish - August 2019

I’m writing this a few hours from the 20th August print deadline for the LinkUp looking forward to the change to warmer, dryer weather that has just been forecast. A combine harvester is busy in a nearby field so I think our farming community is optimistic, too!

As for Parish Council business, we haven’t had a meeting this month, this is normal to accommodate holidays, social commitments and generally enjoying summer. Making an August meeting quorate can be difficult so we skip it altogether. That also means that this write up is likely to be short…

However, did you know that if something urgent crops up between council meetings that needs our attention or a decision then we can hold a short emergency meeting to deal with it? But so far, we haven’t needed to.

There are some items that have dropped into our inbox recently that I want to pass on to you. First, Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance ‘Ride To Save Lives’ event is being held on Sunday 22nd September. This is the fourth year for this event and it is increasing in size each year. Dozens of motorcyclist will ride a route around Notts and Lincs to raise funds for the Air Ambulance. They will leave Newark show ground at 11.00am and will ride through Swinderby village at 11.13am. Last year it took a good 15 to 20 minutes for them all to pass through and it’s quite an exhilarating sight. Please show your support by lining our streets and cheering them on as they pass through – it’s good for them to see our appreciation of what they are doing. More importantly, please make a financial donation to the Air Ambulance, they’ve already attended our village twice on emergencies. More information and how to donate at ambucopter.org.uk

Also, The British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival is being held at on the weekend of 12th and 13th October. In the words of the organisers “This amazing event offers a rare glimpse of farming, and how it has changed over the last 200 years - there are magnificent heavy horses and many styles of vintage tractors all ploughing alongside the most up-to-date machinery of the present day. There are also lots of trade stands, shopping, crafts and tractor and trailer rides and steam ploughing engines, so it’s a great day out for all the family.” Children under 11 go free, over 11 is £5 and adults £10. It sounds like it should be a good and fun weekend. Check our notice boards or www.ploughmen.co.uk for more information.

Like the Collingham country show, I feel we should support these local but significant events at least to maintain our rural heritage. And talking of which, don’t forget the Collingham show is on Saturday 21st September – another great day out for all the family. collinghamshow.com for full details.

I’ve mentioned in the last couple of months that we are aiming to further develop the High Street play area and that we are wanting your ideas on what equipment you would like to see installed. We still want your suggestions so please get in 14

touch with us, contact details at the front of this magazine.

And finally, it’s still very quiet regarding the old Produce World site and the County Council’s proposed High Street parking restrictions. So, no news there I’m afraid. More chances to keep your mind and body in good working order.

Well, I said this is likely to be a short Sage Gardener CIC have developed a new write up and it is! So, until September’s sensory area at their community garden at The issue do have a good rest of the summer Lodge, Eagle Hall LN6 9HZ and enjoy the promised good weather. The garden includes places to sit and wander with plants that stimulate sight, hearing, smell, We’re back in the Village Hall at 7:30pm touch and even taste. If you’d like to come on Monday 9th September. along and have a look and have a go please contact us to book a place. Reg Ketteringham, Chair. SWINDERBY IN THE FUTURE A personal view from Bruce Clark

Is this what you want for your village? Green field land used to double the number of proposed new houses in Swinderby Gravel extraction and three reservoirs Animal rendering plant across the road If not, please attend the Parish Council meetings – the next one is Monday 9 September

I moved to Swinderby in 1993 and have thoroughly enjoyed my 26 years in the village. I spent the last 4 years as a Parish Councillor and having resigned in May, I am not confined by its rules, which enables me to say how I see things. The villagers were tasked with giving opinions on the development of the former vegetable packing site as a brown field development. The agents for the sale of the site held open meetings and opinions were sought. The result was the outline planning document which gained NKDC approval, and consisted of 120 houses, with extra parking to help the school and residents, as well as recreational space for the village. The Local Plan for this area demands that there is an increase in housing which must be achieved within a certain time scale. The required increase would already be exceeded by the original 120 houses on the outline plan, which has the backing of the Parish Council. The site has since been bought and already the developer has stated that he proposes to build several more houses than were on the original plan. In addition, he has approached the owners of land (greenfield land) adjoining this site with financial incentives to sell, giving the potential for a significantly larger development with all the infrastructure problems that would be created, particularly with regard to drainage. Although I think the village would benefit from the proposed 120 houses, I believe that we are in danger of losing control of the size of the village. Swinderby would cease to be the rural village that we all enjoy living in. The Parish Council has to wait for the developer to present the new proposals before it can make any official comment. I would urge residents to be aware of this and attend Parish Council meetings to make their views known, so that the PC observe the opinion of its residents. The next meeting is Monday 9 September. There is another major change which is proposed, and that is the construction of three reservoirs in the fields to the east of the village up Green Lane. The Thomas White Charity who own the land are intending to extract the gravel and dig the reservoirs. It seems to me to be a thinly veiled plan to benefit financially from the gravel extraction. The ground water which is used to irrigate these fields is usually plentiful and the forecast for future summers is one of increasing rainfall. If the fields are no longer used for growing crops, it seems to me there is no need to irrigate a non existent harvest. Raising money by gravel extraction for their charity is not a very charitable act towards the village. The planning application for the proposed animal processing plant in is due to be decided in November. This is worth keeping an eye on as we are in the path of the westerly prevailing wind. All of the above has the ability to change the lives of villagers, especially those living near the proposed development. My worry is that there is a risk that we will ‘sleep walk’ into these changes, by which time it will be too late to act. Whatever your views, I would urge you to attend the Parish Council meetings to listen to the debates. The Parish Council are here to echo the feelings of the village and I hope that you will come to the next meeting in the village hall on Monday 9 September at 7.30pm 20

(Stamford Mercury 20th November 1829)

Footnote. There were three public houses (inns) in the parish of Swinderby, two were located on the A46, the Red Lion and the Sir Isaac Newton. The only public house that appears to have retained the same name is the Plough. The Sir Isaac Newton was initially called The Sun and the Red Lion was renamed the Halfway House. In the early 19th Century, the Sir Isaac Newton was managed and owned by three generations of the Glazier family. In 1856 the licence was transferred to new premises approximately 250 yards from the original inn. Oak bark was used extensively in the English leather industry for tanning. Lops are the side branches of trees hence the saying ‘they lopped of more branches to save the tree’. The only change to how these articles appeared in the press at that time is to the 1796 advert the long s similar in shape to our present f was used. This has been changed because there is no key for a long s on my keyboard!

Photograph of the Sir Isaac Newton Inn in the 1930s before being demolished in 1940 during the construction of Swinderby airfield. The photograph was taken by Mrs Hazledine and further information regarding the half-way houses can be found in Aubourn Clock Tower.
