Come and join us on Wednesday 11th July as we meet for lunch at noon at The King’s Tun pub in Kingston. This is a Wetherspoons pub close to the Station and to the Cromwell Road Bus Station. After lunch we will make our way to The Turks Pier Kingston (behind John Lewis) for a relaxing trip downriver to Richmond. This will be on a standard launch and is subject to the Company’s timetable.

th Thursday 26 July will find us meeting at noon for lunch at The Toby Carvery in Cheam Road, Ewell KT17 1QZ. After lunch we plan a visit to the nearby Nonsuch Gardens in Nonsuch Park, Cheam Road Ewell SM3 8AL. Here you can pretend to belong to Henry V111’s court – although his palace is no longer there. There is a café which usually has delicious cakes and very welcome

cups of tea or coffee.

On Wednesday 8th August we will be meeting at 12 noon at the Cricketers Arms, Stane Street (A29), Ockley, Dorking RH5 5TP. After lunch there is the possibility of a stroll to the water pump on the village green which was in use until fairly recently, or to a nearby lake. Research is being undertaken to find where cups of tea or coffee might be served as this pub, which dates back to circa 1450, closes at 2.30pm.

Thursday 23rd August will see us meet at noon at Skimmington Castle. This pub is tucked away down Bonnys Road, which is a narrow left hand turn from Flanchford Road near Reigate. The postcode is RH2 8RL. The nearby golf course has a windmill at its heart which can be seen if a short walk is taken from the car parks on Flanchford Road. The windmill is now owned by Reigate Council and is used for church services once a month in the summer. Weddings can also take place here. It is named as the St. Cross Chapel.

Pat’s Post:-

On Saturday 28th April, 18 members met up at the Watchman Pub at New Malden for our last Saturday meeting until September. We all managed to sit together at a long table which enabled us to have a chat with one another. The food was very good as usual. When we had finished we made our way to the United Reformed Church Hall for our AGM. We were joined there by another member – making 19 in all. We had reports from our Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. A very valued member of the Committee, Frank Burgess, stepped down from the Committee after a stroke last September left him with very little hearing. Brenda Denby volunteered to join the Committee, although she has other commitments which might occasionally clash. (As the meeting ended there was loud applause for Frank for all his service to the Club over many years.) When the meeting was over we had our tea and again Edna had brought some delicious cakes, which I noticed, disappeared very quickly. Thankyou Edna. We then sat down to a quiz on birds supplied by Barbara which was won by Glenys’ table. A big thankyou to all Committee members, especially Barbara, Paul, Jean and Norman for all their hard work during the year. Without them we would not have a Club or the friendship that goes with it.

Blessed once again by sunny weather, albeit a bit breezy up on the hillside of the Estate, on Thursday 10th May, 16 of us met at the Conservatory Restaurant of Denbies Wine Estate overlooking Box Hill. Family owned and still family run, Denbies vineyard was planted in 1986 and has been expanding ever since. Meeting for lunch, we were joined by 3 members of Boundless staff on a day outing from Brighton HQ office, enlivening our regular chatting even more than usual. Following a very reasonably priced meal which included both hot and cold fare, our group divided into two programmes [swapping over later] so promptly at 2pm we were guided through the working vinery which included a cinema presentation and culminating in a tasting of 3 of their white wines – each one irresistible! Then a dash off at 3pm to join the Vineyard Outdoor Train Ride to the highest point of the 265 acre vineyard. Once we were past the early growing vines and through the entrancing winding steep paths of woodland, we were treated to the magnificent, far-stretching Surrey Downs below and beyond us. At this point our driver/guide let us out to take photos. A little further on our driver gave us details of the family history and pointed out the current owner’s splendid white house proudly settled in its unique location. On our return I managed to fit in visits to the Farm Shops, Art Gallery and most attractive Gift shop where I succumbed to the purchase of not one, but two bags, and began to think about 2018 Christmas pressies! Thankyou [ticket lady] Barbara for a wonderfully interesting day’s outing, and the others involved.

On Wednesday 23rd May, 16 members arrived at the Hogsmill Toby Carvery at Worcester Park. It was a lovely sunny day that put a smile on all our faces. The Carvery was extremely good and Frank and I decided to have a dessert of profiteroles. I had ice cream with mine and Frank had extra cream and it was yummy! After lunch about twelve of us went to the Court Farm Garden Centre to have a look at the plants and have a cuppa in the Tea Rooms. It was nice to see everyone and have a chat and a laugh

On Wednesday 6th June Ann drove to me for a lift to the Rose of York as she was not sure of the route. We arrived at the pub just after noon to find only Edna, Glenys and Shirley there. Jean and Paul had arrived with Thelma, Stan and Shirley – but shortly after their arrival, Stan felt very unwell and, after some discussion, it was decided to return him home. Shirley had stayed as she was offered transport back to Kingston after lunch. We enjoyed lunch – a mixture of useful small and normal sized meals, - hot and reasonably priced and we agreed that we would be happy to return sometime. After a long chat mostly complaining about road and route signages, theatre tickets and concern about Stan, we decided not to proceed to the Isabella and we went home.

[All our very best wishes to Stan and we hope that he is feeling much better.]

(Barbara apologises for no photographs as she was not able to be present that day and, obviously Paul had other matters on his mind.)

Pat’s Post:-

Oh what a beautiful day it was on Thursday 21st June when 12 members met up at Museum in . We were thrilled to welcome two new members to our group and we hope to see them again. We made our way to the café where we had been given our own room to have our lunch and a drink – prices a little on the high side but a varied menu. We all went our separate ways after lunch – some went on Concorde and others visited a variety of aircraft on the site. The wonderful Bus Museum is now at Brooklands and there were buses going back to 1829 when they were drawn by horses. It was well worth the visit and I think that everyone who turned up will agree that we all enjoyed ourselves. Many thanks to Barbara for organising it and to Brenda and Norman for picking up Frank and myself from home. I don’t think we would have made it otherwise!
