2008 FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT 3 Chancellor’s Message

Thanks to our donors’ generous gifts and support, this year we have continued to strengthen SCCCD’s place in the Central Valley and work toward a lasting legacy.

The clearest sign of this shared legacy is the restoration of the Old Administration Building (OAB) at Fresno City College. Unused for more than 30 years, the retrofi tting and renovations are making excellent progress. When fi nal funding goals are met and the redevel- opment is complete, the halls and classrooms of the OAB will serve as a fi tting backdrop for the ongoing work of the SCCC Foundation. This 92-year-old building will stand as a compelling reminder of our place in higher education–where we have come from and, more importantly, where we are going.

In this report, you will read about much of the work being done to benefi t our community now and in the future. We thank you for your contributions to this important work, and for sharing in this enduring legacy.

Thomas A. Crow Chancellor, State Center Community College District

4 STATE CENTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION President’s Message

Dear Friends of the Foundation, While serving as president of the State Center Community College Foundation, I have witnessed the growth in our valley and of the need for our community colleges and the populations they serve. The Foundation works to provide resources for our campuses, fundraising for scholarships, unrestricted funds for quality programs, renovation of the Old Administration Building, and much more. We could not have done it without your support. This year, the Foundation recognized an elite group of donors; our Legacy Makers. Legacy Makers are donors who, through private, corporate or foundation gifts, have contributed $100,000 or more to the Foundation. As we acknowledge these donors, know that each and every contribution we receive makes a difference. In this economy each of you are undoubtedly asked many times over for contributions to a number of deserving nonprofi t organizations in the community. We appreciate that you have chosen to support the work of the Foundation. Executive Director Gurdeep Sihota, formerly Fresno City College’s College Activities Director and an eighteen-year employee of the District, brings to the Foundation great energy, enthusiasm and knowledge of the history of our colleges and campuses. Together, the Foundation, District and the Board of Directors will continue to strive to provide quality leadership as we carry forward our mission. Thank you for your ongoing support and for providing a future for our community through education of students who are our future. Best Regards,

Greg Baxter Foundation President

2008 FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT 5 THANK YOU TO OUR

In addition to teaching remedial reading, English and speech, she also served on the curriculum committee for six years. Mrs. Beal’s gift played a signifi cant role in funding the Fresno City College Speakers Forum, the Honors Program at the North Centers, and a campus identifi cation program at Reedley College.

Dru & Robert Benefi el Scholarship: These grant monies were originally given to Northrop University by alumnus Robert Benefi el to be used for scholarships in the Aviation program. When Northrop University closed for the last time in 1993, the funds were transferred to State Center Community College Foundation, with the help of attorney Clifford Clark. This scholarship now assists students in the Reedley College Aeronautics Program.

EECU was instrumental in the initial funding for the Old Administration Building, as well as numerous student scholarships and support of Foundation programs.

McHenry-Johnston Scholarship Fund: This fund was established by Bruce Johnston and James McHenry, emeriti faculty mem- bers of the Fresno City College Biology Department. Bruce and Jim published the Lab Manual for Biology 3; Intro to Life Science, which is currently sold at the Fresno City College Bookstore. First published in 1991, the lab manual continues to provide endowment revenue which results in yearly scholarships for Life Science Majors going into teaching careers. Both Bruce and Jim have had a lifelong commitment to life science education and the teaching profession. 6 Leon S. Peters Foundation, Inc.: Leon S. Peters graduated from high school in 1923. His family, of Armenian descent, started farming in the San Joaquin Valley. Some years later after the loss of his parents, Leon went to work as a salesman for Valley Foundry in 1929. Seeing the potential of the company, Leon purchased it from the owners. He and his brother Pete went on to lead the company through change and expansion until Valley Foundry and Machine Works became a world recognized supplier of equipment to the agricultural industry.

Miller Brewing Company: Between 1994 and 1998, Miller Brewing Company donated over $100,000 to purchase tool boxes fi lled with tools for students completing courses at Fresno City College and Reedley College Vocational Programs.

Linda Carol Miller Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship was an endowment left to Fresno City College by Linda Carol Colby upon her death in 2005. Linda Colby felt education was an important aspect for our community and gave scholarships to both Fresno City College and California State University, Fresno.

Larry Shehadey built Producers Dairy Foods, Inc. into one of the largest independent family-owned milk producers in the United States. Producers employs 350 people and provides a wide variety of dairy food products from Eureka to Santa Barbara. The company is now run by his son Richard and the next generation of community minded Shehadey family members.

Earl & Muriel Smittcamp: Earl and Muriel Smittcamp are generous benefactors for a number of organizations in the valley. The owners and operators of Wawona Orchards, a successful regional business that leads the industry in development and distribution of fruit and fruit products, the Smittcamps have long supported the importance of education and the impact that can result in lifelong well being.

The Foundation will continually strive to recognize all donors who have reached the Legacy Maker gift level of $100,000 or more. All of our donors who have contributed to the Foundation are appreciated. Legacy Donors have shown an extraordinary level of fi nancial commitment refl ecting their interest in the community and confi dence in the colleges and campuses of the District. 7 STUDENT Success STORY

Hana El-Farra is an ambitious honors student at the Willow International Community College Center who has struggled with her health through the years. She was diagnosed with renal failure when she was 9 years old. After receiving a donated kidney from her mother when she was 11, she focused her energies in the classroom, became a student leader and has volunteered her time tutoring students in Spanish and English.

“At Willow International I have had the opportunity to study what I wanted to and have taken many core classes in order to determine my major,” she said. Hana has taken extra calculus and English classes in order to build a strong foundation to enter a UC campus next fall.

“My goal is to transfer to UCLA and study Arabic,” she said. Her father, who died from kidney failure a few years ago, was Muslim and immigrated from Palestine to the U.S. in the 1980’s. “He is the reason I want to continue my studies in Near Eastern Languages, Cultures and Arabic,” said El-Farra.

Hana is the co-president of the newly established Green Club at the Willow International Center, a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma, a volunteer based honor society, and has maintained a 3.9 GPA.

“I have been quite fortunate to receive a number of scholarships while attending college which has enabled me to pay for books and other living expenses,” she added.

She has received scholarships through the Clovis Rotary Club and Pete’s Sport Shop, which is owned and operated by Rochelle Noblett, a State Center Community College Foundation Board member.

“The quality of the instructors at Willow International has been quite benefi cial and I know that this will enable me to succeed at a 4-year university,” El-Farra said.

With this strong foundation and motivation Hana’s goals for the future include furthering her education to become a professor, teaching the Arabic language.

8 STATE CENTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION Veterans Peace Memorial

The Veterans Peace Memorial Monument and Court of Honor receives Mini Grant

One of the Foundation’s programs is to provide the funding of Mini-grants; grants of $1,000 or less which are funded with unrestricted gifts. Mini-grants considered for approval are to support projects and programs that directly benefi t students and classroom instruction. These grants are available to all faculty and staff and are awarded in the fall and spring. This fall, the Veterans Peace Memorial project was one of 28 mini-grants awarded at our colleges and campuses. The mini-grant that was awarded was given to provide some repair, upkeep and landscaping maintenance of this valuable memorial which is located on a grassy knoll in the Free Speech Area at Fresno City College.

The Veterans Peace Memorial was dedicated on November 9, 1993, and is surrounded on the three sides by the “Court of Honor,” which was dedicated on May 3, 1995. The memorial is a white granite fi ve-point star resting on two black polished granite pillars. The star symbolizes World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf. The two pillars are symbolic of the connection between the earth and stars and the dual nature of the ‘citizen soldier’. It honors the men and women who have served their country in time of war, with some making the ultimate sacrifi ce. The height of the memorial reinforces the concept of looking up to the American servicemen and women.

The award will maintain this valuable memorial which serves as a place of honor for students and faculty alike. It benefi ts students and staff who have served our country, and also the broader community such as community members and local and state representatives.

2008 FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT 9 RENAISSANCE Feast for scholars

The Renaissance Feast for Scholars is the only special-event fundraiser hosted annually by the Foundation. Set in the stunning reference room of the historic Fresno City College Library, the Feast has emerged as one of the area’s most notable social events. Authentic Renaissance royalty and court performers entertain guests throughout an evening that includes pro- fessional actors and musicians, festive social interaction, gourmet food and an exciting auction. Because this is a unique experience for all those who attend, a prominent venue for interaction with business and community leaders, and proceeds of the event benefi t a worthy cause, the Renaissance Feast for Scholars sells out every year. Through ticket sales, sponsorships, and auction proceeds, funds are raised for student scholarships and general support of the mission of the Foundation.

10 STATE CENTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION Construction CONTINUES AT THE OLD ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

The renovation of the 100,000-square-foot historic Old Administration Building (OAB) at Fresno City College is underway. Selective demolition and hazardous materials removal was completed in the spring of 2008. Construction is now in progress on the building renovations, including: seismic retrofi t; structural, mechanical and electrical upgrades; fi re/life safety; and access code compliance. This includes new roofi ng, wiring, windows, and a heating/cooling system with a new central plant. As part of the Environmental Impact Report, the District made changes to the original plans in order to reduce noise levels for neighbors of Fresno City College and the OAB. A smaller trash compactor has been installed near the OAB and a block wall has been built to shield it from view. These changes will greatly reduce noise to the surrounding neighborhood. In addition, the central plant that houses the heating and cooling system for the OAB will be built behind the cafeteria, further removed from the surrounding neighborhood to lessen the noise levels for neighbors. The next phase of the project is the interior improvements to the entire west and south wings of the building. By fall 2010, the structural upgrades and the interior improvements will be complete, opening the doors to classrooms, administrative offi ces, faculty and campus organization offi ces, music/choral rooms, library, staff workrooms, and restrooms in the west and south wings. For the fi nal stage of renovations, SCCCD needs an additional nine million dollars to complete the north and east wings for classrooms, offi ces, music and dance studios. The District has applied to the state for nine million dollars in future bonds. Currently, we have reached half of our original four million dollar capital campaign goal. We are still working to secure funding for the fi nal renovation and fi nishing touches of the auditorium. Help return the OAB auditorium to its original beauty so it can once again be a center of community involvement and pride.
