THE NILES ROTARY PINION March 2013

From President Sandy international project that our club would be able to take part in. It wasn't until the last two days of our trip that we came across the Segera Mission project. Up until that point I had been so disappointed, thinking we had traveled

halfway around the world and we wouldn’t be able to come home with a project, but that all changed once we met Richard and Janice Skow, who have been running the Mission since the death of Janice’s father Pappy at the age of 94.

Segera Mission is on the equator about 40 miles from Mount Kenya, on the Uaso Nyiro River.

Their mission is to give the people of this remote area the messages of God’s love, and a Good afternoon fellow Rotarians & especially guests. chance for a better life through education, medical care, and the chance for a transformed I am so excited to report that we received the future. invitation to fill out the global grant application for the Water project at Segera Mission One of the ways our club will be able to help is in Kenya, Africa. As most of you know Richard by raising funds to install a borehole at the Godfrey, Manuel Franco, Karen Keller and I mission. This will have the potential to offer went to Kenya, Africa last January to look for an clean drinking water to approximately 10,000 residents. At this point our club has raised all the funds needed for our part on this project. Our only obstacle at this point is getting all the paperwork into Rotary International and getting INSIDE THIS ISSUE approval for the matching grant.

August is Membership Month in Rotary – Rick Hood reminds Niles Rotarians that Membership Awareness continues throughout the year, and that the best way for Niles Rotary to grow our club is to bring guests to lunch – they see the product of Niles Rotary and they want to join us! As an incentive, there was a Membership Contest from July 19 to January 15, 2013. There was a Chamber of Commerce Mixer on Nov. 28 to show off Niles Rotary to prospective members. Here’s how the contest works:

PASO ROBLES WINE TRIP – February 2013 About 30 Niles Rotarians, family, and friends spend a fabulous weekend of February 15-17 in Paso Robles enjoying wine, food, and that special Niles Rotary fellowship! We stayed at the La Quinta motel, where the lobby offered nice space for post-event fellowship. From the dinner at Roberts in downtown Paso Robles, to lunches at Vina Robles and Opolo wineries, to the wine dinner at Eberle, to the incomparable wine dinner at Cass Winery, to hats and wigs at Clautiere, plus trips to favorite or new wineries – we all had a great time. Some photos follow – and check our club website to see if an album is downloaded, and come early to a club meeting to see the hundreds of photos from all concerned! Look for some of our favorite wine selections as auction items for the Reverse Raffle. Thank you Kimberly & Steve Foster and Chuck Canada & Carol Smith for all your research and work to make the weekend so special!

As of January 30, 2013, NO NEW CASES OF POLIO in the 3 polio -endemic countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria so far this year!! And it's even better: No new cases of polio in Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, all of the Horn of Africa and all of West Africa.

Here are some comparisons to last year:

On February 1, the District’s fundraising for End Polio Now began! Stay tuned for how we can all help in this important effort.

Polio cases have declined rapidly since 1985, but the fight isn't over. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease, and for as little as US$0.60, a child can be protected against the virus for life. If we don't finish the fight right now, more than 10 million children under the age of five could be paralyzed by polio in the next 40 years.
