The program offers two award categories for adults and youths:
Trophy Angler: Anglers catching a fish exceeding the minimum qualifying length in any of the 33 species categories receive a certificate commemorating their catch. Their names and catches are also included in the Vermont Master Angler Annual Report, posted annually on the Vermont Fish & Wildlife website.
Meet the authors… Master Angler: Anglers demonstrating the skill necessary to catch multiple species that all exceed the minimum qualifying lengths, in the same calendar year, are recognized as “Vermont Master Anglers” and receive a lapel pin at the end of the year. To qualify for the annual Vermont Master Angler Pin, an individual angler must submit qualifying entries for 5 or more species within a calendar year.

2020 – By the Numbers
2020 was the eleventh year of this popular program, and we had the highest number of approved entries, at 1,035, since the inception of the program. Overall participation (the number of individual anglers that submitted entries) was also the highest seen since the program began, with 349 different anglers submitting entries. 2020 also saw the most Master Angler award recipients in the history of the program at 62. For more details, see Participation Trends, next page.
While 95% (978) of the entries were submitted by Vermont anglers, the program also saw participation by non-resident anglers from 10 other states or provinces: Connecticut, Washington DC, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Ohio.

2020 Trophy Fish Entries
A total of 1,035 trophy fish entries from 349 anglers were approved in 2020: • 650 entries from 232 adult anglers (40 Master Angler award recipients) • 385 entries from 117 youth anglers (23 Master Angler award recipients)

Species Breakdown
Entries submitted to the Vermont Master Angler Program in 2020 continue to demonstrate a wide variety of fish species and the diversity of angling opportunities available in the state. Of the 33 fish species eligible for entry in the program, only two (American shad and cisco) had no entries. It’s worth noting that some species saw a significant increase in entries over previous years, including walleye (16 entries in 2019 to 48 in 2020), brook trout (8 entries in 2019 to 16 in 2020), and interestingly there were 5 pike-pickerel hybrids entered in 2020, while there were 0 in 2019.

The Vermont Master Angler Program accepts and encourages entries for caught-and-released fish. In 2020, 736 of the 1,035 (71%) trophy fish that were entered were released to grow bigger and be caught another day! This is the highest release rate of trophy fish since the program began.

Locations – Where the Big Ones Were Caught
Similar to the diversity of fish species seen in the 2020 entries, the waters from which trophy fish were caught was also varied. Trophy fish entries were received from 101 different waters around the state. As in the past, the most entries came from Lake Champlain. The following is a list of waters where 12 or more of the 1,035 entries were caught. 795 (77%) of the total number of entries came from these 13 waters:
