For Peace presents

Pathmakers to Peace Thursday, November 30, 2017 6:00 pm–9:30 pm Plymouth Church, Brooklyn Illustration by Nancy Doniger Program: Melissa Corbett PathMakers to Peace Welcome to the 2017 Pathmakers to Peace Honoree Reception Welcome to the fifth year of our Pathmakers to Peace awards program and reception. We are especially delighted to be gathered again here at Plymouth Church with its proud history of abolitionism and resistance to oppression.

Both the name, Pathmakers to Peace, and the logo for these awards were chosen to emphasize the many different pathways to peace, as well as to recognize those who have played a leadership role in forging new pathways to the elimination of war as well as the social and economic injustices which lead to war.

This year we are proud to honor Linda Sarsour, Racial Justice and Civil Rights Activist, Co-Organizer Women’s March 2017 and Co-Founder/CEO at MPower Change; Leslie Cagan, Coordinator, Peoples Climate Movement NY and Co-Founder, United for Peace and Justice; and UPROSE, an intergenerational, multi-racial, nationally-recognized, grassroots organization led by women of color, working at the intersection of racial justice and climate change, promoting sustainability and resiliency, and a leader in the movement for environmental justice.

The idea for our organization was conceived in October, 1983, when a group of nursery- school parents (some of whom are here tonight) became concerned about the nuclear build-up under the Reagan Administration, along with its militaristic interventions in the affairs of other countries, as exemplified by the invasion of Grenada. With the official birth of Brooklyn Parents for Peace in the spring of 1984, that initial group joined others in a city-wide coalition which succeeded in blocking the Navy from building a nuclear- capable homeport on Staten Island.

Since then, Brooklyn Parents for Peace has survived and grown. The decision to change our name to Brooklyn For Peace reflects our increasingly diverse constituency. We continue to seek different ways of addressing the urgent tasks of ending war and creating a culture of peace. Each new environmental crisis and threat of military action in so many areas of the world underscores the need for grassroots activism to defend values of non-violence, as well as just treatment for all people.

Brooklyn For Peace is non-sectarian and non-partisan. We connect global and local issues. We are primarily an educational organization, while considering activism as an integral part of our mission.

We still have a long way to go in achieving our goal: a world free of militarism, social and economic injustice. Thanks to our long-standing and also our newer members for your commitment. If you are not already a member, we hope that you will become one, and join us in building a world free of war.
