Report

2006

by

David Cookson. Foreword

As you will see from the breeding results, the breeding of swans in the Crewe and Nantwich borough area has again dropped. I think that this probably due to a number of factors, mainly a late spring. I would like to think that we might see an improvement in 2007.

Included in this years report are many site reports and this shows that the majority of swans are loyal to either one site or region of Cheshire with just a few exceptions. Unless otherwise stated, the ring letter, number combinations refer to the green Darvics used in Cheshire. Other colours used in the site reports are yellow(Y) from Staffordshire and blue (B) from Shropshire (7 series), (PXZ) or Cheshire (TVB). Sex of birds is indicated by M or F. The ringing site, ringing date and BTO EURING codes for age are also given. In the EURING codes, 1 and 3 indicate the swan was ringed as a cygnet, 5 indicates that the bird was a second year swan, 7 was a third year swan and 6 indicates that the swan could not be aged.

I would like to thank to the Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund, Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council and Marshlal Electronics and Calibration Services Ltd for their generous donations.

I would also like to thank the following for their help over the last twelve months:- The British Trust for Ornithology, Wildfowl and Trust, the Environment Agency, British Waterways, Cheshire County Council, the City of Stoke-on-Trent, Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council, R. S. P. C. A, Stapeley Grange, Nantwich, Cheshire and Wirral Ornithological Society, Nantwich Natural History Society, South East Ornithological Society, North West Swan Study Group, Merseyside ringing group, South Manchester Ringing Group, Roberts Bakery for supplying bread, Lady Delves Broughton and all other land owners, and all Rangers, Wardens and other people who send me their sightings.

A big thank you also to my helpers especially Bob Anderson and David Cummings for their continued support.

RSPCA Stapeley Grange Report

There was a small increase in the number of mute swans admitted to Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in 2006 with 411 admissions compared to 391 admitted in 2005. However, the number of mute swans admitted from Cheshire during the same period dropped from 161 to 112. A summary of the reasons for admission is below:

Total Cheshire Sickness / Lethargy 143 31 General Injuries 79 28 Fishing Injuries 44 21 Lead Poisoning 37 10 Orphan 19 5 Attacked by Other Swans 17 5 Crash landed 17 6 Oiled / Contaminated 17 2 Feathers Powerlines / Collisions 16 2 Shot 9 1 Dogged 8 - RTA 5 1 Total 411 112

The large number of swans admitted suffering from sickness / lethargy include 46 individuals from Marine Lake that were admitted during January and February 2006. This proved to be a significant incident for the staff at Stapeley Grange as well as for the volunteers of the Southport Swan Rescue group. The swans were found to be suffering from an infection caused by Clostridium perfringens , a bacterium that can occur in sediments. Of the 46 swans that were admitted, 27 were released while 6 died in care and 4 were put to sleep. The remaining 9 were dead on arrival at Stapeley but were admitted for the purpose of performing post mortems. In addition to the mute swans admitted in 2006, a single juvenile was admitted in October having crash landed in a back garden in Southport. Unfortunately the injuries were too severe, seemingly consistent with powerline injuries, and the swan was euthanased. The staff at Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre would like to thank those people who have given up their time to help in the rescue and rehabilitation of the swans that we have cared for in 2006. We are also grateful to those individuals who have provided release sites for the juveniles and, of course, big thanks to David Cookson for his continued work in ringing so many of the swans and cygnets prior to their release.

Andrew Smith Wildlife Supervisor Chester Report 2006

Overall Picture.

The overall breeding success of mute swans in the Chester area this year is better than in 2005. There are increased numbers of cygnets in the broods that have hatched along the canals, but there are also some notable failures. However, after a good winter season on the Dee , overall numbers in the area are now giving concern, with the moult flock all but disappearing from the Groves. The figures below tell the story. The June and July figures for 2006 include six cygnets born on the River Dee in May, which makes the Groves numbers look better than they really are. Other areas in Cheshire, including Winterley Pool, Tatton Park, Doddington Pool, Shakerley Mere etc have their regular moult flocks, so it may be that our birds have dispersed to some of these. It is also possible that some of the regular Chester birds were among the flock of 135 swans on the Menai Straits, or even at Ellesmere where there were over 30 swans present. Hopefully it is a one off situation, and the birds will return next year, as there doesn’t seem to be any change in the conditions on the River Dee, Chester, and there has been less obvious pollution from diesel spillage on the canals. There are reports of increased mink on the canals, but the swans nearest the known mink nest sites, are all doing well this year. An act of aggression was reported with a lone cygnet being killed by the cob at a nest site on the canal at Waverton. This breeding pair were eventually chased off by the newly arrived Christleton pair and their seven cygnets, who regard this area of the canal as their territory.

Breeding Successes.

There have been successes at Christleton Pit with 7 cygnets. At Caughall Bridge and at Croughton on the Shropshire Union Canal both with 5 cygnets, on the River Dee with 7 cygnets, and on the River Gowy at Mickle Trafford 6 more cygnets were successfully reared.

Breeding failures.

The pair nesting on a canal side garden at Waverton failed. They had six eggs but only one cygnet hatched, which was later killed. The pairs at Chemistry & Hoole Lane Locks, Chester Canal Basin, County Hall, Gowy Bridge Waverton, Milton Green, Aldersey Pool, Tattenhall Pool and Chester Business Park all failed either to build a nest, or produce young from eggs. Wintering Flocks on the Dee Marshes.

The number of wintering swans the R. Dee marshes has reached 125+ this winter with approximately 40 Whooper swans joining the local mutes population. The main group can usually be seen between the Iceland Food Factory on the Deeside Industrial Estate, and Shotwick Village, whilst the remainder are much more difficult to see out on the runnels and pools of the salt between Burton and Flint. It is encouraging to see the growth in the number of Whoopers each winter. However this year the usual small number of Bewick swans from Russia are missing. Whooper swans come to the Dee from Iceland or Greenland, and there are also huge numbers at WWT Reserves at in the North West (1,200 ) and Welney (2.000+) in the east, as well as smaller numbers in North Wales and Ireland.
