Mr Keith Brown MSP 29 November 2011 Minister for Housing and Transport The Scottish Parliament Edinburgh EH99 1SP

Dear Mr Brown,

Hyndland Station, Glasgow: Request for meeting with Transport Minister

BACKGROUND: Hyndland Station in Glasgow’s West End is the 12th busiest in . But Hyndland East junction has been listed for years in a Scottish context, as being a notable under-capacity “pinch point” which chokes further development of Glasgow’s local rail network, and until a few months ago, this single “island” platform station has received virtually no significant investment, although at least three major works are required: A “level access” (DDA) upgrade at all entrances: Broomhill, Gartnavel and Hyndland, An extra platform for services which now run through to Edinburgh, A major track upgrade at the Hyndland East junction. Hyndland Station has a high footfall and an unusual set of three entrances, ALL accessed only by an extended footpath from the nearest road, and either a flight of 31 steps from the subway tunnel or a similar flight via the footbridge. Unusual local street layout means every entrance is surprisingly distant from the others - Hyndland to Broomhill, 1km; Hyndland to Gartnavel, 1.5km; Broomhill to Gartnavel, 2.3km. CURRENT ISSUE The Level Access DDA Upgrade currently proposed by Network Rail covers only the Gartnavel and Broomhill entrances, but not the Hyndland entrance. Serious community concerns remain about the many passengers using this Hyndland entrance - which serves an ageing population – continuing to struggle on the stairs in the long term. Our concern is to ensure this third entrance is also upgraded. This station has never received much investment, yet delivers a high level of service. We have already met with Network Rail, as have Sandra White MSP and Ann McKechin MP. We have also met with Transport Scotland. We now REQUEST a MEETING with yourself as the TRANSPORT MINISTER to discuss the present development plans for Disabled Access at . My colleague Norman MacLeod of Broomhill Community Council has already sent you (by email on 26 November) a similar request to meet at the same time.

Yours Sincerely,

Ann Laird, Chairman
