Lady Seahawks Softball Preview

Coach Brian Staubly discusses the new season and his expectations

By Omar Torrijos Contributing Writer

After having played their first 17 games into the season, 13 of which were away, Coach Brian Staubly talks about the performance of The Lady Seahawks so far. How high is the level of motivation from the players after the first 17 games? “The players are highly motivated, the record reflects wins and losses, but what it doesn’t reflect is that the record at the moment is for tournament play where the players were competing against some of the top players and teams in the country and were competitive. Throughout our losses we did it to St. Petersburg twice by a run, when only looking at the records you would assume that motivation is down while on the contrary playing with this caliber of players actually raises the motivation to win.” Which players have had a good performance so far? “Both Casey Jacobs and Jackie Cargill played well recently.” Which players are expected to improve their performance in order to provide support for Casey Jacobs? “Everybody on the team is aware they need to step up and support each other.” What’s being done to improve batting average? “We are focusing on extra batting practice and a lot of live batting.” What are you doing in order to make The Lady Seahawks realize they have enough talent among themselves to go for a championship contention? “We have a number of talented young players and we are working together to learn to function as a team, supporting one another and to dig deep and strive to win. Time is spent not only on skills but game strategy as well.”

The current roster and schedule is available on page 17.

Dwyane Wade, who is averaging almost 29 points per game, dislocated his shoulder midway through the fourth quarter after he attempted to the ball and Rockets’ forward accidentally hit him in the shoulder and made it pop out of place. Wade was in so much pain that he came to tears while sitting on the bench and had to be wheeled off the court and taken to the hospital. This injury couldn’t have happened at a worst time since the Heat face the top three seeds in the Eastern Confence, including the division leading , in the next 15 games. The Heat could make a move before Thursday’s 3 p.m trading deadline to get a point guard to replace D-Wade (The Observer went to print before the deadline). Who knows what Riley could pull off? Do the Heat have enough to get Mike Bibby? Is it really worth it to trade James Posey’s expiring contract or exciting young prospect Dorrell Wright for an aging Sam Cassell?. I think it is necessary. Shaquille O’Neal needs to step it up more than ever now. While Shaq was out during the first half, Wade held this team up from drowning, now Shaq needs to do the same while Wade is injured. Reports from the Associated Press say Wade could be out three to five weeks. If this team can somehow hang on to its playoff spot, and Wade comes back right before the playoffs it’s definitely possible for the Heat to make a run. This is now the most crucial time for the Heat who are barely holding on to the eighth and final playoff seed at 26-27. Shaq won’t be able to do this alone, he is going to need help. Current Heat players such as Jason Williams, Antoine Walker, Alonzo Mourning, Gary Payton and Eddie Jones have been stars and playmakers in the past. When they joined the Heat they were told to take a back seat and be role players, now these guys need to come in and fill the giant void that Wade left. They need to contribute now more than ever. The Heat has to prove how much they really want to repeat, and Pat Riley will have to show everyone how great of a coach he really is. Nobody said it was easy, now let’s hope for the best and see how much heart this team has. 18 The Observer Notices February 26, 2007
