Lakefield College School / 3 Like No Other

The student experience at Lakefield College School is truly like no other. Our students are inspired through engaging academics, building life skills in the outdoors, gaining confidence on the sports fields, living history in the trenches, developing a voice in the theatre, and watching sunsets with best friends by the water. These are the days that help them discover their individual potential; these are the experiences that they will remember with pride for the rest of their lives.

We hear so often: “It was the best day of my life!” Why? Because every day is an adventure. Students are invested in how they learn, how they play, how they live, and how to take responsibility for themselves and others. Independence and exploration fosters character and builds global citizenship. Even with the latest technology at their fingertips, our beautiful campus and natural setting encourages students to become actively engaged in the outdoors, and to discover the fine balance that encourages healthy lifestyles and meaningful relationships.

LCS students participate whole-heartedly in our caring community: a community filled with family-like residences, engaged faculty, leadership opportunities, global influence and life-long friendships. Learning lives here, and you can too!

k We believe that a student should be encouraged to examine responsibly what might be, as well as what is.

k We believe that information technology should be used to facilitate and enhance learning.

k We believe that the relationship between students and their teachers should be one of mutual respect and common objectives.

8 / We’ll Help You Get There—Academics

At Lakefield College School it is popular to do well. Doing well means more than simply earning a place at university; it is also about experiencing an academic program that is so interesting, so personalized, and so much fun that you simply want to try new things and to excel.

Lakefield College School / 11 Come Play With Us

At Lakefield College School we play to have fun and to win! LCS offers a co-curricular sports and arts program in which all students are enthusiastically engaged. Sports and the arts are an integral part of every student’s day and an essential element of the LCS experience.

The co-curricular program encourages students to write their own adventure. In each of the three terms, students choose to become involved in one of our art or athletic offerings.

Co-Curricular Athletics Varsity Sports Varsity (or 1st) teams allow students the thrill of competitive-level sports. Well-trained coaches and dedicated athletes have enjoyed championships in both independent and public school athletics association leagues (CISAA and OFSSA) and in local and international tournaments. Many LCS student-athletes compete at the provincial and national levels and have gone on to varsity-level university teams.

Recreational Sports A wide range of team and individual recreational sports encourage students to hone their skills and try new things. The experiences, relationships, and joy that students share in being active and fit are positive and profound and provide rich memories of their LCS years.

Our Coaches Many LCS coaches have competed professionally or played at the university varsity level. But more than that, they care. All coaches are dedicated faculty who offer students the training, support, and encouragement they need to try new things and be the best they can possibly be while having fun.

Lakefield College School / 13 Co-curricular Arts

Lakefield College School’s commitment to the arts means that students find many opportunities to explore their artistic and musical skills. The performing and fine arts play an important role in the lives of many LCS students: they learn new skills, discover their voices, explore visual and musical media, and have fun.

All programs are based on the belief that from creating and performing comes self-discipline, confidence, self-awareness and a wider knowledge of the world both past and present.

The co-curricular arts program offers a host of choices either in place of, or in addition to, a sports commitment. The choices include:

k theatre—onstage or backstage

k debating

k music—instrumental or vocal

k dance

Many students are involved in more than one area of co-curricular arts throughout the year. It is not at all unusual for a student to participate in a play, sing in the choir, play in the band, and go to a debating tournament all in one term. However, everyone is welcome to participate at their own pace and at their own level.

14 / Many of the co-curricular arts programs involve travel to perform or compete at other schools in the surrounding area or around the world. Students enjoy participation in Model United Nations conferences, music festivals, and debating and public speaking tournaments. Others take to the stage where the entire school applauds their efforts and talents in our exceptional Bryan Jones Theatre—the finest thrust-stage theatre in Central and Eastern .

Dance Program Dancers take to the stage during the winter term, presenting an exciting dance showcase after months of rehearsals in our state- of-the-art dance studio. Skilled dancers with years of training join those who are new to the program in this very popular activity. Mentored by experienced coaches and guest dance instructors, students experiment with a variety of creative movements and cultural dance forms. The students are not only the performers, but also the choreographers, and create the majority of pieces in the annual showcase. They have also performed competitively at the Conference of ’s DanceFest.

“One thing is for certain. If we want our kids to create a better world—they’ll have to imagine it first.”

At Lakefield College School, leadership is about providing opportunities that challenge and enable students to reach their individual potential while celebrating their becoming confident, enthusiastic and active citizens.

The leadership program provides the tools necessary for nurturing the development of personal and team skills and the leader within everyone.

Leadership opportunities are presented, with encouragement and support from staff, at every grade level. The program culminates in the final year when Grade 12 students play an active role in administering aspects of the school and bringing vibrancy to school life. Every graduate assumes a leadership role as a Senior- In-Charge, student head of their residence, or, if elected, one of two co-head students. Many also earn a course credit as part of the leadership class practising important leadership skills in organizing and running school spirit events and activities.

The leadership program’s goal is to have students leave LCS infused with a desire and armed with the skills to become positive, productive, and responsible contributors to their local and global communities.

Lakefield College School / 17 A Fun Place to Learn and Live

At Lakefield College School, your classes and co-curricular activities are not your only gateways to learning. LCS is also about making friends, having fun, and being part of a community. You will learn a lot from the great people around you who come from every corner of the world. They may well become your friends for life.

Houses All LCS students become a member of a house. There are 11 boarding houses and three day houses led by staff and senior students who organize fun spirit events, help to keep you informed on daily activities, and offer around the clock support. LCS boarders—approximately two-thirds of the student body—live in their designated houses. Your boarding home is an amazing place where you can laugh with friends, hang out in the common room, study and play. It is like having a sleep-over with your friends every night.

“From the moment Lauren set foot on the school campus, she felt welcomed. She was accepted for who she was. She made friends with so many people, students, teachers and staff. Lauren would come home on her school breaks and she couldn’t wait to get back to LCS. She would be counting the days until she went back ‘home.’ She loves the way the school is like one big, happy family. Everyone knows her name; everyone takes the time to speak to

her.” SHEILA STILES, LCS PARENT

18 / Boarding Life Our seven-day boarding program balances academics, co-curricular arts and athletics with fun-filled recreation, social and spirit events. Structure is provided throughout the academic day, followed by time for co-curriculars and extra help, and then regular evening study hours. Students have ample time to balance studying and socializing with friends.

Boarding life is built on the school’s core values and trust. Each residential house is home to between 14 and 26 students. An adult Head of House lives with his or her family in the house and is responsible for the care of students. An Assistant Head of House also has an apartment in the house and helps with student care. A warm closeness develops in each residence, much like a family, with everyone enjoying each other’s company while learning to be sensitive to others’ space, feelings and time.

Boarding Houses Moving into your boarding house in September is one of the most exciting experiences of school life. You will develop a strong sense of belonging and loyalty as you decorate your room, build new friendships with your housemates, and fall into the rhythm of the school schedule.

Each of the 11 boarding houses at Lakefield College School organizes house activities. Often led by Grade 12 students, activities can include movies, games, and bowling nights, group dinners and shopping expeditions to Peterborough, birthday celebrations, broomball and other intramural sports, and local cooking classes. Like a large family, each boarding house celebrates the seasons, holidays, and each other’s successes in its own unique way.

As a boarder, you always have time to study, socialize, and seek support from others. LCS endeavours to respect the privacy and personal space of all students, including study and sleep time, and there is always an Assistant Head of House or Head of House available to assist you.

22 / Connecting With the World

Come to Lakefield College School and see the world. One of the goals of LCS is to have students appreciate that with privilege comes responsibility. While that valuable lesson informs much of the student experience, it is seen nowhere more prominently than in the many international travel and adventure opportunities made available to our students.

Round Square Many international initiatives are offered under the auspices of , an international affiliation of more than 80 schools. Round Square adheres to six core ideals: k internationalism k democracy k environment k adventure k leadership k service

Round Square Conferences Every year, LCS students travel with a faculty member to the annual Round Square Conference that brings together delegates from member schools for a week of guest speakers, excursions, and cultural activities. Past conferences were held in Kenya, Australia, Scotland, and India. LCS students also regularly attend the Round Square Americas Regional Conference and the Young Round Square Conference for students in Grades 7 and 8.

Lakefield College School / 23 Service Projects Every year, Lakefield College School students have the opportunity to apply and travel to an area of the world to participate in service projects. Led by experienced LCS faculty, students experience life in communities where fulfilling basic human needs can be a challenge. They may travel to remote villages in Thailand, India, Kenya, or Ecuador, for example, to help build schools, dormitories, water systems, or preserve natural habitats. Participants may also visit important cultural, heritage, and preservation sites. Immersed in local community life, students are physically challenged and emotionally moved in ways that leave them appreciative of the life they have. They return home more eager to value difference, and strive for social and political justice.

Exchanges You will find LCS students attending other schools for a term in Australia, France, Germany, Britain, New Zealand or a host of other countries. Meanwhile, LCS is enriched by having exchange students spend time with us. The exchange experience is life-expanding for the students directly involved, and invaluable as a means for the LCS community to see that we live in a small world where similarities can be recognized and differences celebrated.

The Ondaatje and Irving Expeditions Through the generosity of the Ondaatje and Irving families, LCS is fortunate to offer annual expeditions for senior students. The expedition groups are small and positions on the expeditions are earned through a competitive selection process.

The expeditions alternate year by year. One year the Irving expedition will offer students the chance to paddle and camp in Canada’s far north,

24 / the next year the Ondaatje expedition may offer hiking in Peru, river rafting in Nepal, or climbing Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro.

Students who are offered a spot on an expedition team research the history and geography of the route beforehand, keep a personal journal and present a slide show afterward. All return tired, but inspired.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Program In celebrating its connection to the British Royal Family (His Royal Highness the Duke of York ’78 is an active LCS alumnus and trustee of the school), LCS is proud to have been one of the first institutions in Canada to offer students the opportunity to participate in the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s program. It is now active in more than 45 countries.

Consistent with the school’s values, the Duke of Edinburgh’s program fosters self-discipline, enterprise, and perseverance. It is based upon individual effort and improvement. To earn a bronze, silver or gold award, a student must undertake activities involving: k voluntary community service k skill development (hobbies) k physical recreation k expeditions

All Lakefield College School students can participate and many do. Overseen by a faculty member, students are encouraged to remain engaged throughout their school career. Year after year, more LCS students per capita than any other high school in Canada are awarded the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award from a member of the British Royal Family.
