HOME AND AWAY: Since Norm Eash became head coach in 1987, Illinois Wesleyan is 97-37 (.724) at home and 79-55- 1 on the road (.589).

COACH NORM EASH: The “dean” of league coaches and winningest coach in school history, Norm Eash (Illinois Wesleyan, 1975) is in his 28th season at IWU … He has a career overall record of 176-92-1 (.656) and a career CCIW mark of 124-71-1 (.635) … Eash became the school’s all-time football coaching win leader with a 52-21 victory over North Park on Oct. 12, 2013 … He surpassed the record held by his own college coach, Don “Swede” Larson (168-121-6 from 1954-86) … Eash is in second place all-time in CCIW victories, behind only Larson with 142 CCIW wins…Eash passed Augustana’s Bob Reade for second place in conference coaching victories. LAST GAME: Illinois Wesleyan sophomore Donavan Laible (Lexington HS), forced into a start at quarterback, made the most of his opportunity, throwing for three touchdowns in the Titans' 31-7 win at Millikin on Oct. 11. Seeing his first varsity action at IWU, Laible subbed for senior Tyrell Bolden (Springfield HS), who had an emergency appendectomy early Saturday morning, and threw for 215 yards, completing 18 of 31 passes. Laible also ran for 49 yards on 15 carries as junior running back Anfernee Roberts (Flossmoor, Homewood-Flossmoor HS) led the Titans in rushing with 93 yards on 27 carries. Junior wide receiver Artie Checchin (Arlington Heights, Rolling Meadows HS) made 10 catches for 137 yards and one TD and junior wide receiver Andrew Javorka (, St. Laurence HS) had four grabs for 58 yards and two touchdowns. The other Titan touchdown came on a fake field goal attempt when sophomore backup quarterback and kick-holder Andrew Iwaszkiewicz (Elmhurst, York HS) threw a 14-yard pass to senior tight end Brady Hails (Collinsville HS). Junior Michael Kelley (Carbondale HS) made all of his extra point attempts and connected on a 22-yard field goal midway through the second quarter. Defensively, IWU was led by sophomore lineman Kyle Venhuizen (Evergreen Park, HS) with 11 total tackles and three quarterback sacks for -16 yards. Junior Kevin Slawkowski (Mokena, Lincoln-Way East HS) had seven tackles while sophomore linebacker Sean Garvey (Glenview, Glenbrook South HS), senior defensive end John Worley (Elmhurst, York HS) and freshman defensive back Matt Campbell (Arlington Heights, Rolling Meadows HS) each accounted for six total tackles.

CCIW HONORS: Sophomore lineman Kyle Venhuizen (Evergreen Park, Ill., Evergreen Park HS) was named the CCIW "Defensive Player of the Week" on Oct. 13. Venhuizen totaled 11 tackles (nine solo), four tackles-for-loss, three quarterback sacks and a forced fumble during the Titans' 31-7 win over Millikin on Saturday. His sacks accounted for -16 yards and his tackles-for-loss totaled -19 yards. Millikin was held to 159 yards of total offense.

BEHIND ENEMY LINES: Augustana lost its first two games at Mount St. Joseph (58-25) and Hope (37-27), then won at home over Loras (34-17). Augie has lost its last two, at Elmhurst (17-10) and lost its Homecoming game last week to Wheaton, 20-13. The Vikings led 13-10 at halftime but Wheaton scored 10 third-quarter points … Augustana outgained Wheaton 293-229 in the gane and the Viking defense held the Thunder to just 68 rushing yards on 36 carries. Augie junior quarterback Sam Frasco completed 16 of 28 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown. Austin Chausse ran for a game-high 96 yards on 11 carries in his first extensive varsity action of the season. Senior Benjamin Hodges added 45 of Augustana's 171 rushing yards while senior Kyle Frake made five catches for 67 yards. Sophomore linebacker Jack Asquini and senior safety Tim Maroder had eight tackles each on defense, while senior defensive end Thomas Enke had seven stops, including team highs of six solo tackles, 2½ tackles for loss and 1½ sacks … Coach Rob Cushman (Puget Sound '78) is in his fourth year at Augustana and has a record of 13-22, 9-14 CCIW. Cushman was defensive coordinator for the Vikings in the 2008-10 seasons when Augie teams compiled an overall record of 19-11. Cushman had an 18-31 record in five seasons (1997-01) at Eastern Oregon University and was the first head coach at Feather River Community College in Quincy, Calif., where his teams went 34-21 in five seasons with appearances in five straight bowl games.

THE SERIES VS. AUGUSTANA: Illinois Wesleyan is the only team in the CCIW with a winning record vs. the Vikings…Dating back to 1917, Illinois Wesleyan leads by a margin of 42-36-1 but the Vikings have won nine of the last 13 contests … The teams have alternated wins since 2006 with IWU winning, 24-10 last year … IWU is 23-16 at home and 19-20-1 at Augustana … The Titans won four straight from 1995-98 before Augie stopped a four game losing streak with a 41-0 shutout in 1999…At one time IWU led the series, 32-12-1, but 11 straight Viking wins trimmed the margin to 32- 24-1 heading into 1992… The Vikings have had the upper hand since 1981, winning 23 of the 33 meetings since then.

THROW AND CATCH: Against Simpson, junior wide receiver Andrew Javorka (Chicago, St. Laurence HS) had 14 catches for 150 yards. The 14 catches is tied for fifth most in an IWU single game and one behind the record shared by four (Chris Bisaillon; Carroll; Nov 11, 1989; Ed Brady at Wheaton; Oct 29, 1983; Eric White, Wis.-Eau Claire; Sep 11, 2004 and Zac Williams, at DePauw; Sept 11, 1999) … Freshman quarterback Jack Warner (Prospect Heights, Hersey HS) had 28 completions, tied for third most in an IWU game, with 46 attempts, tied for eighth most. The records are 34 completions (Doug Moews, Wheaton, Nov 7, 1987) and 64 attempts (Chad Beaty, at Wheaton, Oct. 24, 1998).

RECORD RETURNS: The 88-yard fumble return for a fourth quarter touchdown at Albion by junior Will James (Champaign, Centennial HS) is the longest in Illinois Wesleyan history, topping the old mark of 85 yards (also for a touchdown) by Kevin Kaplan against Millikin on Nov. 11, 2000 … In the season opener against Franklin, Artie Checchin (Arlington Heights, Ill., Rolling Meadows HS) had a 100-yard kickoff return for a TD, the longest in Titan history, breaking the record of 99 set by Bill Alkire against St. Joseph on Oct. 19, 1942. It was the first kickoff return for a TD by an IWU player since Chris Bisaillon broke one for 88 yards at Elmhurst on Nov. 3, 1990.

JACK WARNER: For the first time in his 28 seasons, Norm Eash started a freshman at quarterback in the season opener … Jack Warner played his high school football at Arlington Heights (Ill.) John Hersey High School, where he was a two- year starter...All-Mid Suburban League East Conference selection as a senior and was the league's "Player of the Year", throwing for 1,922 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 237 yards and seven TDs ... Holds five school records including most passing yards in a season, most touchdowns in one season, and most total offense in a season .. John Harris Warner...Born April 25, 1996... Undecided on academic major at Illinois Wesleyan.

PREVIOUS CCIW HONORS: Illinois Wesleyan junior placekicker Michael Kelley (Carbondale, Ill., Carbondale HS), who accounted for all IWU points in a 13-3 loss at Simpson, was named the CCIW "Special Teams Player of the Week" for the second time in his career on Sept. 22. Kelley connected on a 41-yard field goal with 7:03 to play in the game and cut the Simpson lead to 10-3. The 41-yard field goal is the second from 40+ yards in his career and his second longest career kick, behind only the 44-yarder he made against Augustana on Nov. 9, 2013. The 41-yard field goal is the 13th longest in IWU history … Illinois Wesleyan senior John Worley (Elmhurst, Ill., York HS) and junior Artie Checchin (Arlington Heights, Ill., Rolling Meadows HS) were named the CCIW defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively, on Sept. 8. Worley had five tackles (five solo), three sacks for 24 yards, two forced fumbles, two pass breakups and one interception during the Titans' 42-35 win over Franklin. Checchin tallied a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and finished with 329 all-purpose yards including 161 receiving yards and 154 kickoff return yards (seven yards rushing and seven yards on punt returns).

SEASON OPENERS: IWU is 17-11 (.607) in opening-day games under Norm Eash, including the 42-35 win over Franklin on Sept. 6, 2014. The Titans have now won seven straight season opening games after losing five in a row from 2003 to 2007. SEPTEMBER: The Titans had their 22-game September winning streak ended with the loss at Simpson … The last loss before that was on Sept. 15, 2007 to Mt. St. Joseph…The Titans are 59-20-1 (.743) in the Norm Eash coaching era in the month...IWU teams won 11 straight September games (all non-league) from 1995 (loss at Simpson) until 2001 (loss to Washington U.). PERFECT STARTS: In every year from 2008 to 2013, the Titans started out 3-0 (with wins each year over Hope, Alma, and Aurora) … In 2013 Illinois Wesleyan went on to be 7-0 for the first time since 1996 … It was the third straight year for Illinois Wesleyan football to be at least 6-0 … IWU was 6-0 in 2012 before losing at Wheaton 38-33 and IWU was also 6-0 in 2011 before losing 24-0 to North Central.

CCIW PRESEASON POLL: For the fourth straight year, Illinois Wesleyan was picked third in the CCIW preseason coaches poll. IWU received 36 points after going 9-2 (6-1 CCIW) in 2013. North Central (13-1, 7-0 CCIW in 2013) won the poll with 49 points (seven first place votes) after winning their eighth-straight CCIW title, tying a conference record set by Augustana from 1981-1988. Wheaton (8-2, 5-2 CCIW) was second with 43 points and one first place vote. After IWU came Augustana (27 points), North Park (26), Elmhurst (21), Millikin (12) and Carthage (10). Each CCIW coach votes for the seven other schools and do not vote for their own teams.

WORLEY PRESEASON WHIRLWIND: Senior defensive end John Worley (Elmhurst, York HS) is a preseason Division III All-American in both the 2014 Sporting News Magazine and the Lindy's College Football National Edition magazine. He was also rated No. 20 among defensive ends on the website NFL Draft Diamonds, which provides a ranking of seniors in college football in anticipation of the 2015 draft. The 19 players ranked ahead of Worley come from Division I programs. In 2013, Worley was on the Coaches Association 2013 Division III All-American team, a first team all-CCIW selection and earned the team's "Best Lineman" award as he finished with 39 total tackles and had 12 quarterback sacks, second most in an IWU season. He ranked in the top 15 nationally for sacks, accounting for 71 yards lost by opposing teams. His 19.5 tackles for loss was good enough to be in the top 25 in the nation in the statistic.

Five Illinois Wesleyan seniors were chosen as members of the 26th annual USA College Football Pre-Season Division III All-American teams. Offensive lineman Niall Mulcahy, defensive back Tyrell Bolden, defensive lineman John Worley and punter Matt Kussmann were chosen to the first team while linebacker Connor Klein earned honorable mention. The USA Football Network chose a total of 649 players as preseason All-Americans from 244 Division III schools. Selections are made by a national panel including head coaches, sports information directors, members of the Football Writers Association of America, Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association, New England Football Writers Association and Philadelphia Football Writers, pro football scouts plus staff journalists of Lindy's Sports Annuals, The Sports Network and USA Football News. A total of 79 players were named to both the first team offense and defense while 75 more earned second team on both sides of the ball and 73 more earned third team offense and defense honors. There were 95 honorable mention offense players and 100 on defense … A co-captain for the 2014 team, Mulcahy (Elmhurst, Ill., Fenwick HS) was a first team all-CCIW lineman in 2013 and second team all-CCIW in 2012 … Bolden (Springfield, Ill. HS) was a first team all-CCIW squads as he made a total of 27 tackles (24 solo) with three interceptions … For info on Worley, see above … Kussmann (Bloomington, Ill., Tri-Valley HS) was a first team all-CCIW punter who averaged 40.3 yards on 26 punts … Klein (Park Ridge, Maine South HS), who was also honorable mention on the USA Football preseason team in 2013, was a second team all-CCIW selection last fall. UNDER THE LIGHTS: Since bringing lights back to Tucci Stadium in 2001, Illinois Wesleyan has a 9-2 home record under the lights…The 20-10 loss to Carthage on Oct. 4, 2014 was the last night game…It was the 11th home night football game at IWU’s Wilder Field since 1971…The Oct. 25, 2008 game was the latest night game on the calendar at home in at least 43 years. In 2002, IWU won its first overtime game in a 31-24 decision over Washington U. The Titans were to have played Aurora at night on Sept. 15, 2001, but the game was cancelled after the national tragedies of Sept. 11. Before 2002, the last home night game was on Oct. 2, 1971, when Carthage downed the Titans, 22-19.
