Academic Forum on Translation and Dissemination of Ethnic Cultures in

Southwest Held in Zunyi Medical University

The Annual Conference 2018’ and the Academic Forum on

Translation and Dissemination of Ethnic Cultures in Southwest China, sponsored by Guizhou Translators Association and organized by School of Foreign Languages of Zunyi Medical University (ZMU), was kicked off ceremoniously on Xinpu Campus of ZMU on 13th October at 8: 30.

Present at the conference were over 100 experts, scholars and master’s candidates from more than 30 institutions like University of International

Business and Economics, Beijing Language and Culture University,

Chongqing Normal University, Chongqing Jiaotong University, Qujing

Normal University, , Guizhou University of Finance and Economics, Guizhou Normal University and Guizhou Minzu

University. Vice president Wang Zizheng, also a member of ZMU party committee, attended the opening ceremony. The conference was moderated by Wang Mei, deputy dean of School of Foreign Languages of

ZMU.

Prior to the opening ceremony, the conferees watched the publicity videos of ZMU and School of Foreign Languages of ZMU. Vice president Wang Zizheng, on behalf of ZMU, delivered a welcoming address to the attendees. Professor Zhou Jie, dean of School of Foreign Languages of Guizhou University, representing Guizhou Translators

Association, briefed the work of the Association. Tan Zhanhai, deputy party secretary and dean of School of Foreign Languages of ZMU, extended his welcome as the representative of the organizer.

Specially invited guest Wu Ping, professor and doctoral supervisor with Beijing Language and Culture University, delivered a keynote speech titled A Multimodal Study of the Covers of the Translations of Luo

Tuo Xiang Zi, stressing the importance of three key words in academic researches—symbol, translation and cross-culture communication. He investigated the covers of 41 translations of Luo Tuo Xiang Zi in 21 languages by analyzing ideational, interpersonal and combinatorial meanings, in a bid to reveal from a multimodal perspective the working patterns of book cover designs in the dissemination of the translations and the cultures reflected in the covers. Xu Jun, professor and doctoral supervisor with University of International Business and Economics, gave a lecture titled Textual Misinterpretations and mistranslations in the

Translating of Chinese Classics—A Case Study of the Analects of

Confucius, probing into the misinterpretations and mistranslations in the translating of Chinese classics with substantial linguistic data and strict verification. Her unique insight into translation and her logical and coherent demonstration of her arguments gave full display to her profound academic attainments. Panel discussions were held in the afternoon. The panel members exchanged academic opinions over multiple topics like A Figure-ground

Theory Based Contrastive Study of Song Lyrics and Their English

Versions, Studies of the Translation of Literary Works, and The

Translation and dissemination of Chinese Ethnic Festival Cultures. The scholars illuminated their studies and shared their academic discoveries and philosophies. All the participants present gave an attentive ear, expressed their ideas actively and raised questions one after another, generating an enthusiastic atmosphere.

The closing ceremony began with the panel discussion summarizations presented by the panel discussion moderators Wang

Xiaomei, deputy dean of School of Foreign Languages of Guizhou

University, and Tian Xingbin, dean of College of International Studies and Education of Tongren University. What ensued was the prize awarding, for which there were two first prize winners, 4 second prize winners, 5 third prize winners and a number of encouragement prize receivers. Professor Xiao Tangjin, executive president of Guizhou

Translators Association and dean of School of Foreign Languages of

Guizhou Minzu University made concluding remarks, rendering an intensive and detailed summary of the annual conference.

The annual conference thoroughly showcased the academic achievements in English translation and Japanese translation as well, providing not only a platform for promoting academic exchanges and expanding academic horizons, but also a top quality academic feast for translation researchers. It’ll be a boost to the growth of young teachers and the development of academic researches.
