And said to them, “Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. :17-18 A MEDITATION “They said I’d find you here.” He looked up. A deep and peaceful smile creased his dark, weather-beaten face. His black, unruly hair, lightly veined by the first streaks of gray, fluttered in the evening breeze blowing in off the lake; he looked to be very much in his element.

“They said you were a fisherman; before, anyway; but I guess he called you away from all of that.” The smile widened and he shook his head gently. “No,” he replied, “never from the fishing; just to a bigger lake.” As he spoke, he reached down and plucked four small stones out of the water.

“Stones, plucked from the Sea of , washed over by those waters which flow like the life-blood through my veins. All of my beginnings have been here, and here I find myself drawn back, again and again. This is where I first heard the Master’s call, where I returned when He, whom I loved so dearly, lay cold in the tomb, and where my heart, aching with memories of denial, was touched and made whole by the Presence of the Risen Lord.

“My brother Andrew and I fished this lake from our boyhood: night after night, season after season, year after year. My moods and the rhythms of my life seemed to rise and fall with the movement of her waters; but Andrew was always more detached. He’d often stop in the middle of whatever he was doing and cock his head, as though he were straining to hear something afar off.

“I remember when word first came of strange goings-on at the . They said, a prophet, like Elijah of old! was exhorting people to repent and be baptized, “Shaking trees to their roots!’; and, as though that were what he was waiting for, Andrew had to go. Sometime later he sent word for me to join him, so once I could get away, I did.

“Now, John the Baptizer was something to see. Loud and bold, he fairly shouted the word of God, and it leapt from heart to heart. I was undone. I knew that the LORD was calling through him and I, like Andrew before me, was plunged under those waters, refreshed in body and soul. That seemed to be all that I had come for, so I got ready to go home, but Andrew wanted to stay.

“I’ll always remember that moment when my brother burst into the room, breathless and wide-eyed, as I gathered up my things. “Simon! Simon! Come, we’ve found Him! He’s here! Come and see!” I tried to settle him down, to find out what he was on about. “The Messiah! Oh, Simon, come and see!” …continued on p. 2

“He grabbed my arm and dragged me to the doorway, then Overcome, I dropped to my knees. “Lord, go away from outside. As he hurried me along, he explained. “John me; I’m a sinful man; I’m not worthy…” I buried my face pointed Him out. He hailed Him as the Lamb of God who in my hands. Then I felt His hand upon me. “Don’t be takes away the sin of the world! He said that when he afraid, Simon, fisherman. From now on I shall make you baptized Him he saw the promised signs; he knows that become a fisher of men.’” this is the One. Hurry, Simon, hurry.” “I was dumb with wonder and amazement. We drew the “Amazed, I followed; and then we were there. Time passed, more at the stones in his hand, and tossed them, lovingly, but the memory of those next minutes (hours?) is like a back into the sea. dream now. Next thing I knew, I felt Andrew’s hand on Fr. Doug  my shoulder. “It’s time to go home.” He said; and we did;  back to Galilee.

“In the days that followed, my thoughts returned often to those eyes and His words. What did they mean? Was He really the Messiah? Then came a night when there was no catch. You don’t know frustration until you’ve toiled all night, drawing weightless coils of netting through black, unfruitful waters. We were on the shore as dawn broke, searching for tears, mending and muttering, tired and irritable. Villagers were already coming down to the beach to look over the catch, bargaining for breakfast; but we had   nothing to offer. I was only vaguely aware that there were Mark became the interpreter of Peter, and he wrote down accurately, but not more voices and jostling than usual. Then, suddenly I felt in order, as much as he remembered of the sayings and doings of Christ. “He explained that He wanted to get into my boat to push off from shore where He could speak more freely to the crowds; and He spoke!

“I said that the Baptizer spoke as heart to heart, but with

Jesus it was surely soul to soul. It was as though He were looking right inside you—He knew your thoughts; your secrets; your sins.

“How long did He speak? Perhaps hours, but I knew no passage of time until He had finished and dismissed the crowd. He turned to me, smiled, and suggested that we push out a little further and let down the nets for a catch. I stared at Him, disbelieving, so He repeated His words. I shook my head and tried to explain that we had laboured all night without success, we were all tired, it was too late now, and….; but there was this look in His eyes… “Well, I guess,… if You say so, we could try…”

“I have never seen a catch like that before—surely it was a whole shoal of fish—the nets were strained to the breaking point, and Andrew and I were shouting to ’s boys  to come with their boat as well. Then, as we steadied the load, I looked at Jesus and thought, Who is this?!

We clearly have struck a chord, and I believe there are  opportunities for us to do more.

The first thing that I keep harping on is that, as part of a long- term pastoral plan for Annunciation, we need to start developing a camping ministry, or even something that could turn in to a camping ministry. I’ve written a couple of times about how effectively our local Ukrainian Catholic parish uses an annual family camp to build community, to help educate their children in their liturgy, and to reach out to others (including building some friendships with people from Annunciation). There is an opportunity for Annunciation to offer a similar week-long family camp at their property,
