It is in worship that we express our theology and define our identity. It is through encountering God within worship that we are formed and transformed as the people of God. One of the glories of the Episcopal Church is its liturgical worship. Liturgy refers to the patterns, forms, words, and actions through which public worship is conducted. The people’s responses are in bold. This type of note, offering directions about the service is called a “rubric,” which comes from the Latin wordrubrica (red)—referring to a time when these instructional notes were always written in red. When the service is accompanied by music, it often begins with an instrumental piece of music, during which the congregation can prepare for worship. prelude Sweet, Sweet Spirit Doris Akers (1922–1995) Spirit Break Out Ben Bryant, Myles Dhillon, Luke Hellebronth (b. 1985), and Tim Hughes (b. 1977) Holy Spirit Bryan Torwalt (b. 1985) and Katie Torwalt (b. 1988) The Entrance Rite introit Lord, Speak to Me after Robert Schumann (1810–1856) Lord, speak to me that I may speak In living echoes of thy tone; As thou hast sought, so let me seek Thy erring children lost and lone. O lead me Lord, that I may lead The wandering and the wavering feet; O feed me, Lord, that I may feed The hungry ones with manna sweet. O teach me, Lord, that I may teach The precious things thou dost impart; And wing my words, that they may reach The hidden depths of many a heart. (Frances R. Havergal, 1836–1879) 1 hymn at the procession • 423 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise Sung by all. St. Denio We begin our worship as a gathered community by praising God in song. the opening acclamation Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. Glory to God for ever and ever. the collect for purity This prayer was an English rendering of a Latin prayer that began the liturgy in the medieval church before the Reformation. It remains a distinctive part of Episcopal worship to this day. Almighty God, Dios omnipotente, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, para quien todos los corazones están manifiestos, and from you no secrets are hid: todos los deseos son conocidos Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts y ningún secreto se halla encubierto: by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, Purifica los pensamientos de nuestros corazones that we may perfectly love you, por la inspiración de tu Santo Espíritu, and worthily magnify your holy Name; para que perfectamente te amemos through Christ our Lord. Amen. y dignamente proclamemos la grandeza de tu santo Nombre; por Cristo nuestro Señor. Amén. 2 hymn of praise To God Be the Glory Sung by all. William Howard Doane (1832–1915) TheGloria , or some other song of praise, centers the service on the God we gather to praise in our worship. the collect for the fifth sunday after the epiphany The collect is the prayer appointed for each Sunday that “collects” or captures the theme of the day or season of the Church year. It summarizes the attributes of God as revealed in the scriptures for the day. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins, and give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 3 The Word of God the first lesson This reading is typically from the Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures) which Jesus knew and from which he often referred or quoted. Isaiah 40:21-31 Isaías 40:21-31 Have you not known? Have you not heard? ¿Acaso no lo sabían ustedes? Has it not been told you from the beginning? ¿No lo habían oído decir? Have you not understood from the foundations ¿No se lo contaron desde el principio? of the earth? ¿No lo han comprendido desde la creación It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, del mundo? and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; Dios tiene su trono sobre la bóveda que cubre la tierra, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, y ve a los hombres como si fueran saltamontes. and spreads them like a tent to live in; Él extiende el cielo como un toldo, who brings princes to naught, lo despliega como una tienda de campaña. and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Él convierte en nada a los grandes hombres Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, y hace desaparecer a los jefes de la tierra. scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, Son como plantas tiernas, recién plantadas, when he blows upon them, and they wither, que apenas han echado raíces en la tierra. and the tempest carries them off like stubble. Si Dios sopla sobre ellos, se marchitan, To whom then will you compare me, y el huracán se los lleva como a paja. or who is my equal? says the Holy One. El Dios Santo pregunta: Lift up your eyes on high and see: «¿Con quién me van a comparar ustedes? Who created these? ¿Quién puede ser igual a mí?» He who brings out their host and numbers them, Levanten los ojos al cielo y miren: calling them all by name; ¿Quién creó todo eso? because he is great in strength, El que los distribuye uno por uno mighty in power, y a todos llama por su nombre. not one is missing.
