Sunday, May 9, 2021 Easter Season: Sixth Sunday This week’s readings: :25-26, 34-35, 44-48 Psalm 98 1 John 4:7-10 John 15:9-17 Last week we pondered the first part of the parable of the True Vine, and this week we contemplate the second part. is speaking at the Last Supper as he prepares his disciples for what is to come – the fear and heartache of his passion and death, as well as the mystery of his resurrection. Instead of just calling for them to “remain in him” as he did in the beginning, today’s words are more explicit.

Jesus commands his followers to “remain in my love.” He is reminding them that his words are not to burden them with excess worries or tasks, but instead are intended for the fullness of joy. The refrain of the old folk song said that “they’ll know we are Christians by our love.” Will they? Today’s Scripture passages offer us a simple way to check in with our progress along the spiritual path. What is the state of our joy? What is the state of our love? If we need help in either area, Jesus offers us an invitation to let ourselves experience the peace of God as we rest in the love of Jesus, the true vine. And then, they’ll know us, not only know us by our love, but by our joy.

When you think about it, knowing what is promised to those who remain in God’s Led by by Led Spirit the

love, we should be the most joyful people on the planet. - Next week’s readings - Easter Season: - Ascension of the Lord :1-11 Psalm 47 Ephesians 1:17-23 Mark 16:15-20

Faith Formation Ministry L.J. Milone, Director, 301-622-1122, [email protected]

Nihil Sessions This is a contemplative, nondual, wholistic, mystically oriented, and ongoing series on the essentials of Catholic faith and spirituality led by L.J. Milone. Come for an entirely different way of talking about God, faith, and spirituality.

The word “nihil” means “nothing” and reflects the core goals of these sessions: to follow Jesus along the way of the cross or the way of nothingness, to encounter the God who is no-thing, incomprehensible mystery, to affirm and explore the self-emptying love of God in the core teachings of Catholicism, to explore and apply the path of letting go to our lives, to discover the power and healing of silence, and to delve into the many mystical spiritualities in the Catholic tradition.

In these sessions you will be challenged to grow spiritually, to appreciate the life-changing truths of our faith, and to open yourself ever more to the Infinite Spirit of God.

Each session ends with silent meditation.

Tuesday nights, 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Saint Matthias’ Story – May 14 According to Acts 1:15-26, during the days after the Ascension Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers—about 120 of Jesus’ followers. Now that Judas had betrayed his ministry, it was necessary, Peter said, to fulfill the scriptural recommendation that another should take his office. “Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection” (Acts 1:21-22). They nominated two men: Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias. They prayed and drew lots. The choice fell upon Matthias, who was added to the Eleven. Matthias is not mentioned by name anywhere else in the .
