THE MOSS FLORA OF AND THE .

BY A. BRUCE JACKSON.

Although in ,the past a good deal of attention has been • devoted by local botanists to Hampshire mosses, of late years scarcely anything has been published about their distribution in the county. A considerable.amount of field work has, how- ever, been dpne by students of this interesting group of plants in various parts of the county, and it seems desirable that the accumulated records resulting from these investigations should be brought together in these pages. It will be well at the outset to refer to existing papers on the subject of Hants bryology. (i) To Venables' Guide to the Isle of Wight, published in 1862, now a scarce work, the late Rev. A. Bloxam and Mrs. Venables contributed a list of about 60 mosses. It is impossible now to test the accuracy of these early records, as no specimens exist to confirm them, but I have included them here as a matter of interest. (2) The late Mr. C. B. Clarke in his Flora of Andover,. published in 1866, enumerated 52 mosses found in that neighbourhood. (3) • In 1870 the late Mr! Henry Reeks published in Vol. 1 of the Newbury District Field Club Transactions, a list of 81 species found by him in the neighbourhood of . (4) In 1887 a list of 140 .species, recorded chiefly from the and districts, was published by the late Mr. F. I. Warner in the first volume of the Hants. Field Club proceedings, but no definite localities were given. 3° (5) In the Journal of Botany for 1898, Mr. H. N. Dixon gave collated lists of Hants Mosses from various sources', including Messrs. Clarke and Reek's papers, lists contributed to the Botanical Record Club by Messrs. E. D. Marquand and H. F'. Parsons, and a list of about 100 species seen in Sparsholt parish by the Rev. E. D. Heathcote. (6) A summarised account of Hants and Isle of Wight • Mosses from the pen of Mr. Dixon appeared in Vol. 1 of the Victoria County History, published in 1900. At this time 210 species were recorded from the area named. It is only necessary to add that the number now (1907) on record is over 270, to give some idea of the numerous additions. Quite lately the Isle of Wight has been carefully worked for mosses by the Rev. H. N. Livens of Newport, who during 1906-7 collected no less than 160 species, including a good many interesting species hitherto unrecorded. This list will find an appropriate place in a Natural History Guide to the Isle of Wight, to be published shortly, but the contri- butor has, with the permission of Mr. F. Morey, F.L.S., the Editor of the publication, allowed me to incorporate it in this enumeration. I am also indebted to the Rev. W. L. W. Eyre of Swarraion, for a list of about 80 •mosses collected in or near his parish; to my friend Mr. J. F. Rayner for numerous records from the New Forest and the Isle of Wight; to Sir William Portal, of Laver- stoke, who very kindly lent me the interesting moss herbarium of the late Dr. Hill, of Basingstoke, containing plants collected chiefly in that neighbourhood; and to Mr. Frank Comyns, my companion on many a bryological ramble for much help, most ungrudingly givea, in the preparation of local lists, etc.

A good deal remains to be done uefore the Moss flora of Hants can be regarded as thoroughly worked out. Bearing in mind the varied character of the soil, Hants ought to be as rich in. species as almost any of the Southern counties. Districts ' where chalk predominates would repay careful examination in winter and early spring. Many mosses attain their full .3* development' in January and February,, when but' few •botanists are abroad. The New Forest, which to the student of flowering plants is very favourite ground, has never, so far as I am aware, been systematically explored for mosses and hepatics, and it is much to be wished that some competent observer would undertake such a task. Mr. Rayner's admirable list of New Forest Fungi is an example of what may be done by careful work in this direction. With the exception of the Isle-of Wight list in Venables' guide, I havetiot thought it necessary to repeat records printed in other papers. The initials N. S. and W. precede the records for N. and S. Hants and Wight, respectively, the divisions adopted being those of Mr. Townsend's " Flora of Hampshire." The letters .in italics, which follow • the localises, represent the observers mentioned. My own records are followed by a full stop.
