However, there is very limited information about the biology, ecology and population structure of this species. Knowledge about the population characteristics of this mussel before the exploitation phase is very important for the management of this species in the future. On the other hand this study is the first record of the swan mussel from Lake Çıldır and determination of the growth and flesh yield of Anodonta cygnea in this lake will be the basic reference for further studies on fisheries and processing activities. The mean shell length of the specimens was 104.2±0.52 mm (±SE of average) (range 49.8-136.8 mm) and mean live weight 94.8±1.42 g. The relationship between shell length and live weight was estimated as W = 0.0001 L2.88 (r = 0.96). Linear relationship was found between dry flesh weight and shell length (DFW = 0.052 L - 2.3721, r = 0.99). -

Growth deceleration coefficients were shown to vary widely and differ significantly among individuals. The average value of the growth deceleration coefficient for the population is 0.060. The growth of mussels in the Livojoki River is accompanied by two regular biorhythms. These biorhythm periods were roughly constant both through an individual’s ontogeny and among mussels, their average periods were 7.16 and 4.09 years. We discuss the possibility that these biorhythms are of thermodynamic nature. ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the species composition and range of Mediterranean Blennies (Ac- tinopterygii, Blenniidae) occurring in river estuaries and lagoon systems of the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, and to characterise the length–weight relationship of the specimens. A total of 15 sites were surveyed from November 2014 to June 2017. A total of 210 individuals representing 3 fish species (Rusty blenny-Parablennius sanguinolentus, Freshwater blenny-Salaria fluviatilis and Peacock blenny-Salaria pavo) were sampled from five (Beşgöz Creek Estuary, Manavgat River Es- tuary, Karpuzçay Creek Estuary, Köyceğiz Lagoon Lake and Beymelek Lagoon Lake) of the locali- ties investigated. The high juvenile densities of S. fluviatilis in Karpuzçay Creek Estuary and P. sanguinolentus in Beşgöz Creek Estuary were observed. Various threat factors were observed in five different native habitats of Blenny species. En total, achéganse nomes galegos para 534 especies de moluscos. A estrutura En primeiro lugar preséntase unha clasificación taxonómica que considera as clases, ordes, superfamilias e familias de moluscos. Aquí apúntase, de maneira xeral, os nomes dos moluscos que hai en cada familia. A seguir vén o corpo do documento, onde se indica, especie por especie, alén do nome científico, os nomes galegos e ingleses de cada molusco (nalgún caso, tamén, o nome xenérico para un grupo deles). Ao final inclúese unha listaxe de referencias bibliográficas que foron utilizadas para a elaboración do presente documento. Nalgunhas desas referencias recolléronse ou propuxéronse nomes galegos para os moluscos, quer xenéricos quer específicos. Outras referencias achegan nomes para os moluscos noutras linguas, que tamén foron tidos en conta. Alén diso, inclúense algunhas fontes básicas a respecto da metodoloxía e dos criterios terminolóxicos empregados. 2 Tratamento terminolóxico De modo moi resumido, traballouse nas seguintes liñas e cos seguintes criterios: En primeiro lugar, aprofundouse no acervo lingüístico galego. Lister was the first naturalist to record invertebrates from the River Foss. Martin Hammond [email protected] December 2017 Introduction Over 170 aquatic invertebrate taxa have been recorded from the River Foss, mostly identified to species level but a few identified only to genus, family or other level. The majority of data are from Environment Agency sampling stations at Marton Abbey, Lilling Green, Strensall, Huntington Church and Castle Mills for the period 1995 to 2016. Few records are available for the upper Foss, where a considerable number of additional species are likely to be found. For a few groups, especially molluscs, older records are available and these provide valuable insights into changes in the ecology of the river. Archaeological investigations from riverside sites in central York also provide some interesting information about the past fauna of the Foss. For example, examination of deposits at Layerthorpe Bridge has revealed statoblasts of the bryozoan Lophopus crystallinus from several samples of fluvial sediment (statoblasts are pods of cells which allow asexual reproduction). These deposits ranged in age from the Anglo-Scandinavian period to the 19th century (Hall et al, 2000), indicating that Lophopus had a very long history of occupation of the lower Foss. The Crystal Moss-animal, to give its English name, is a colonial invertebrate which is a filter-feeder on microscopic algae and bacteria in nutrient- rich, slow-flowing waters. Although once widespread, the Crystal Moss-animal has declined greatly. -

Conservation Officer’s Report 2013 ADVICE & HELP: 1. Roman snails: Numerous assistance requests were dealt with concerning Helix pomatia the Roman snail. These included: Assistance with or confirmation of correct Roman snail identification; Advice on survey options and guidance and help for those engaged in conservation work to obtain Natural England licences (H. pomatia is protected under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act). Suggestions to explain the sudden deaths of Roman snails including for a North Downs population where mortality was noted as to occurring between dawn and dusk. Various suggestions were made for this unusual observation including one from David Heaver of Natural England who suggested, “I would not discount sciomyzids - the adult flies parasitise adult snails and the larvae develop within either the mantle or body of the snail. When the grown larvae leave the snail to pupate, which the evidence often suggests may be overnight, the snail succumbs and will be found in the morning, the larvae having moved off and pupated in litter”. 2. Identification issues: A number of conservation linked identification issues were undertaken. These included clarification of two incorrect identifications of Pisidium tenuilineatum from different parts of Sussex, confusion arising from separation of Valvata piscinalis and V. macrostoma, and several incidents where help was needed to identify large unionid mussels with certainty. ROMAN SNAILS THREATENED BY DEVELOPMENT PLAN: A long and sometimes acrimonious planning dispute had been running for at least nine years between some residents of Harpenden, Hertfordshire and Harpenden Town Council (HTC). This concerns a relatively small area of former allotments and adjacent Westfield Recreation Ground known both to local residents and the council to support a population of Roman snails Helix pomatia. -

Naturally, the handbook describes sampling strategies and techniques, not only designated for the LIFE- project, but constitute the basis for mussel sampling generally according to standard protocol. Thus, this handbook is based on results from former studies and experiences by the authors and the results have been published previously in different formats. The handbook demonstrate suitable sampling techniques which will be used to survey variables which include mussel population size, density and individual age/size before and after restoration measures (Actions C.1 and C.3 in this project) at the twelve project sites that are planned for in this project. Host suitability studies have shown that glochidial growth and load vary significantly between host strains as well as among individuals of a suitable strain. Variation in host suitability has been linked to environmental conditions, host age and/or size, genetic composition of the host and parasite, or a combination of these factors. In our study, we wanted to investigate if brown trout (Salmo trutta) displayed an age-dependent response to glochidial infestation. We hypothesised that 1+ naive brown trout hosts tolerate glochidial infestation better than 0+ hosts. In order to test our hypothesis, we infested 0+ and 1+ hatchery reared brown trout with glochidia from closely related mothers and kept them under common garden conditions. This allowed us to observe a pure age dependent host response to infestation, as we eliminated the confounding effect of genotype-specific host interactions. We analysed the interaction between glochidial load and host condition, weight and length, and observed a signif- icant age-dependent relationship. Glochidial load was negatively correlated to host condition in 0+ fish hosts and positively correlated in 1+ hosts. -

CITY OF YORK Local Biodiversity Action Plan 2017 City of York Local Biodiversity Action Plan - Executive Summary What is biodiversity and why is it important? Biodiversity is the variety of all species of plant and animal life on earth, and the places in which they live. Biodiversity has its own intrinsic value but is also provides us with a wide range of essential goods and services such as such as food, fresh water and clean air, natural flood and climate regulation and pollination of crops, but also less obvious services such as benefits to our health and wellbeing and providing a sense of place. We are experiencing global declines in biodiversity, and the goods and services which it provides are consistently undervalued. Efforts to protect and enhance biodiversity need to be significantly increased. The Biodiversity of the City of York The City of York area is a special place not only for its history, buildings and archaeology but also for its wildlife. York Minister is an 800 year old jewel in the historical crown of the city, but we also have our natural gems as well. York supports species and habitats which are of national, regional and local conservation importance including the endangered Tansy Beetle which until 2014 was known only to occur along stretches of the River Ouse around York and Selby; ancient flood meadows of which c.9-10% of the national resource occurs in York; populations of Otters and Water Voles on the River Ouse, River Foss and their tributaries; the country’s most northerly example of extensive lowland heath at Strensall Common; and internationally important populations of wetland birds in the Lower Derwent Valley. -
