Potential automorphy of G-local systems Jack A. Thorneb September 4, 2019 Abstract Vincent Lafforgue has recently made a spectacular breakthrough in the setting of the global Langlands correspondence for global fields of positive characteristic, by constructing the ‘automorphic–to–Galois’ direction of the correspondence for an arbitrary reductive group G. We discuss a result that starts with Lafforgue’s work and proceeds in the opposite (‘Galois– to–automorphic’) direction. 1 Introduction Let Fq be a finite field, and let G be a split reductive group over Fq. Let X be a smooth projective connected curve over Fq, and let K be its function field. Let AK denote the ring of ad`eles of K. Automorphic forms on G are locally constant functions f : G(AK ) → Q which are invariant under left translation 1 by the discrete group G(K) ⊂ G(AK ). The space of automorphic forms is a representation of G(AK ), and its irreducible constituents are called automorphic representations. Let ℓ ∤ q be a prime. According to the Langlands conjectures, any automor- phic representation π of G(AK ) should give rise to a continuous representation ´et ρ(π): π1 (U) → G(Qℓ) (for some open subscheme U ⊂ X). Homogeneous Flows, Moduli Spaces and Arithmetic
CLAY MATHEMATICS INSTITUTE SUMMER SCHOOL 2007 Homogeneous Flows, Moduli Spaces and Arithmetic at the Centro di Ricerca Matematica Designed for graduate students and mathematicians within Ennio De Giorgi, Pisa, Italy five years of their PhD, the program is an introduction to the theory of flows on homogeneous spaces, moduli spaces and their many applications. These flows give concrete examples of dynamical systems with highly interesting behavior and a rich and powerful theory. They are also a source of many interesting problems and conjectures. Furthermore, understanding the dynamics of such a concrete system lends to numerous applications in number theory and geometry regarding equidistributions, diophantine approximations, rational billiards and automorphic forms. Diagonalizable flows on locally homogeneous spaces and number theory Manfred Einsiedler and Elon Lindenstrauss∗ Abstract.We discuss dynamical properties of actions of diagonalizable groups on locally homogeneous spaces, particularly their invariant measures, and present some number theoretic and spectral applications. Introduction Flows on locally homogeneous spaces are a special kind of dynamical systems. The ergodic theory and dynamics of these flows are very rich and interesting, and their study has a long and distinguished history. What is more, this study has found numerous applications throughout mathematics. The spaces we consider are of the form Γ\G where G is a locally compact group and Γ a discrete subgroup of G. Typically one takes G to be either a Lie group, a linear algebraic group over a local field, or a product of such. Any subgroup H < G acts on Γ\G and this action is precisely the type of action we will consider here. One of the most important examples which features in numerous number theoretical applications is the space PGL(n, Z)\ PGL(n, R) which can be identified with the space of lattices in Rn up to homothety. APRIL 2014 ● Official newsletter of the LSU College of Science e-NEWS NEWS/EVENTS LSU Museum of Natural Science Research Shows Hummingbird Diversity Is Increasing Research relying heavily on the genetic tissue collection housed at LSU’s Museum of Natural Science (one of the world’s largest collections of vertebrate tissues) has provided a newly constructed family tree of hummingbirds, with the research demonstrating that hummingbird diversity appears to be increasing rather than reaching a plateau. The work, started more than 12 years ago at LSU, culminated with a publication in the journal Current Biology. - LSU Office of Research Communications More LSU Geologist's Innovative Use of Magnetic Susceptibility Helps Uncover Burial Site of Notorious Texas Outlaw Brooks Ellwood, Robey H. Clark Distinguished Professor of Geology & Geophysics, was featured in a recent edition of Earth, for his innovative use of magnetic susceptibility (MS) for high- resolution interpretation of sedimentary sequences. Magnetic susceptibility is essentially how easily a material is magnetized in an inducing magnetic field. MS has proved useful for dating archeological sites more than 40,000 years old. One of Ellwood's more unusual applications of MS was when he was approached by Doug Owsley, forensic anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institution, to help search for the burial site of notorious Texas outlaw William Preston Longley, or 'Wild Bill." Ellwood, Owsley and their research team excavate the grave site of More "Wild Bill." Parthasarathy [email protected] 1 Remembering a giant This article is a sequel to my article on Ramanujan [14]. April 2020 will mark the death centenary of the legendary Indian mathe- matician – Srinivasa Ramanujan (22 December 1887 – 26 April 1920). There will be celebrations of course, but one way to honour Ramanujan would be to do some introspection and stock-taking. This is a short survey of notable achievements and contributions to mathematics by Indian institutions and by Indian mathematicians (born in India) and in the last hundred years since Ramanujan left us. It would be highly unfair to compare the achievements of an individual, Ramanujan, during his short life span (32 years), with the achievements of an entire nation over a century. We should also consider the context in which Ramanujan lived, and the most unfavourable and discouraging situation in which he grew up. We will still attempt a stock-taking, to record how far we have moved after Ramanujan left us. Note : The table below should not be used to compare the relative impor- tance or significance of the contributions listed there. It is impossible to list out the entire galaxy of mathematicians for a whole century. The table below may seem incomplete and may contain some inad- vertant errors. Welcome to ICM 2006, the 25th International Congress of Mathematicians, and the first ICM to be held in Spain. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the Spanish nation, so rich in history and culture, for its invitation to Madrid. We greatly appreciate that His Majesty King Juan Carlos is honouring mathematics by His presence here today. While celebrating this feast of mathematics, with the many talking-points that it will provide, it is worth reflecting on the ways in which our community functions. Mathematics is a profession of high standards and integrity. We freely discuss our work with others without fear of it being stolen, and research is communicated openly prior to formal publication. Editorial procedures are fair and proper, and work gains its reputation through merit and not by how it is promoted. These are the norms operated by the vast majority of mathematicians. The exceptions are rare, and they are noticed. Mathematics has a strong record of service, freely given. We see this in the time and care spent in the refereeing of papers and other forms of peer review. We see it in the running of mathematical societies and journals, in the provision of free mathematical software and teaching resources, and in the various projects world-wide to improve electronic access to the mathematical literature, old and new. We see it in the nurturing of students beyond the call of duty. -

He was a 14 th century physician. No information is available on his birth and death – only “Al-Mughni”, a book, has been left to make him famous in surgical and medical knowledge. Methods: We used desk and historical research methods in this research, with a historical approach. This commonly used research method in human sciences was used to criticize and study the birthplace and works of Sadid al-Din Kazeroni. Results and Conclusion: Sadid al-Din Kazeroni discussed the exact issues in the field of anatomy, surgery, and gynecology. He was fluent in pharmacology. In his pharmacology book, for the first time, he named drugs considered necessary before and after surgery. In this study, we reviewed the biography and introduction of the works and reviewed “Al-Mughni”, a book on breast cancer.
