INTRODUCTION
The records of Peter deCarteret Cory provide a rich source of information about Canadian judiciary history of the XXth century. There are documents concerning his professional and personal career as a lawyer, a professor and a judge of the Federal Court of Appeal and of the Supreme Court of Canada. The records make an important contribution to the collective memory of Canada. The following inventory details this unique documentation.
Peter deCarteret Cory, B.A., LL.L. was born in Windsor, Ontario on October 25, 1925. He is the son of Andrew and Mildred (Beresford Howe) Cory. He studied at the University of Western Ontario (Assumption), B.A. in 1947 and at Osgoode Hall Law School in 1950. He served with the Canadian Army between 1943 and 1952 as pilot in the RCAF in overseas with the 6 Bomber Group F/0 (1943-1945), and in the Reserve Army as 48th Highlanders Captain qualified as Major (1947- 1952).
Called to the Ontario Bar in 1950 and created Q.C. in 1963, Peter deCarteret Cory practised law with Holden, Murdoch between 1950-1974. He was elected Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1971, Chairman of the Ontario Civil Liberties Section of the Canadian Bar Association, President of the County of York Law Association, National Director of the Canadian Bar Association and President of the Advocates' Society. He was appointed judge to the Supreme Court of Ontario High Court (Trial Division) in December 1974, judge to the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1981, and Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada on February 1, 1989. Since his retirement from the Supreme Court of Canada, Peter deCarteret Cory works for the law firm Osler Hoskin and Harcourt in Toronto. In tandem with this occupation, he was appointed commissioner and member of the Military Judges Compensation Committee in November 1999 for a period of four years.
He received many honorary degrees, awards, decorations and medals from universities, associations and the Canadian Army: Doctors of Laws from York University, Windsor University, Law Society of Upper Canada, American College of Trial Lawyers, Hon. Colonel, 426 (T) Training Squadron, Canada Medal 1867-1992, Victory Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Defence Medal, France & Germany Star and 1939-1945 Star. Peter deCarteret Cory fonds
