Hospitality
Our hospitality ministry offers hospitality from September through June. During these Ten months the ministry serves coffee, cake and other refreshments after the 9:30 A.M. family Mass every week. They work hard and do a great job! Everyone in the parish is welcome, regardless of which Mass you attend. Although I thank the entire committee for their love and commit- ment to our parish, I thank especially the chairpersons: Rose Maria and Joe Mazza. Rose Maria and Joe are very well organized and dedicated to this ministry and we very much appreciate them! The ministry begins again in September and we will remind you then. Thanks again to all involved!
Our New Auxiliary Bishop, Most Reverend Richard Garth Henning
On Tuesday, July 24, 2018, Monsignor Rich Henning was ordained a Bishop. When a priest is ordained a Bishop it is called an Episcopal Ordination. Bishop Henning is now an Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. An auxiliary Bishop is a Bishop assigned to assist the diocesan Bishop in meeting the needs of the diocese.
A diocesan bishop is entrusted with the care of the entire diocese, he is the shepherd, the leader of the diocese. Bishop John Barres is our diocesan bishop. He is responsible for teaching, gov- erning, and sanctifying the faithful of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. He shares his duties with priests and deacons who serve under him. Bishop Barres now has four auxiliary bishops to as- sist him and they are: Bishop Bob Brennan, Bishop Robert Coyle, Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski and Bishop Rich Henning. We also have three retired Bishops and they are: Bishop William Murphy, Bishop John Dunne and Bishop Emil Wcela.

On the weekend of July 28/29 we will be honored with a visit from the Rt. Rev. James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima in India. Bishop Thoppil will speak at all the Masses, sharing with us some insights into his work among the people of Nagaland. The Diocese of Kohima takes its name from the capital city of the state of Nagaland, and the diocese covers the whole state which is about the same size as Connecticut and Rhode Island put together. The diocese is in the far northeast of India on the border with Myanmar….formerly known as Burma. Bishop Thoppil is originally from the Indian state of Kerala, where many of our own pa- rishioners come from. The entire population of Nagaland is almost two million…… the Catholic population numbers about 60,000 which is about 3% of the population. While the Catholic population is relatively small, Kohima diocese has proved a fertile ground for vocations. The work being done by Bishop Thoppil and his associates is beginning to bear fruit.
On the weekend that the Bishop is with us, we will take up a second collection to support his work. There is no special envelope for this collection. Please be as generous as your means will allow so that we can support Bishop Thoppil and his priests, sisters, and lay helpers. Much of the diocese is in hill country and the climate is excellent for growing tea bushes. Many of the bishop’s flock work on the tea plantations picking tea. For this very difficult task they earn the princely sum of $1 per day. More than 70% of the region has no electricity. In the areas where there is electric- ity…….the supply is sporadic.
The Bishop and his associates are working among people who are extremely poor. They are working to bring the message of Jesus Christ in an area where the population is made up of 14 different tribes…..each of whom has their own language. While these priests and sisters are working in these difficult conditions…. we can help them on a daily basis with our prayers. Our prayers will continue
to help them work miracles under challenging conditions. We can also help them with a generous donation for their work. Each year we have one visit from someone working in mission territory. In previous years we have had visitors from India, the Philippines and the Caribbean. The generosity of the parishion- ers of Holy Spirit is legendary. Each year our mission visitors are amazed at how generous we are. Let us come together once again the weekend of July 28/29 and respond to Bishop Thoppil with our prayers and our customary generosity. CYO
The 2018 Holy Spirit CYO Cross Country practice season will start Monday, July 13th and continue throughout the summer.
The practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30pm to 8:30pm at the Garden City Middle School. For those of you unfamiliar with this season, it is where the children run different distances in the park, depending on their age group.
If your child is not able to make the practices in July and August, or will miss a week or two because of vacations, that's okay. They can still come to the practices when they get back. If you're not sure of whether or not your child will like it, come to the practice and try it out before you register. The fee is $30 and the cost for a new uni- form is $20. Readings for the Week of July 29, 2018 July 29, 2018 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday: 2 Kgs 4:42-44/Ps 145:10-11, 15-16, Have you ever wanted to be part of something 17-18 [cf. 16]/Eph 4:1-6/Jn 6:1-15 bigger? Even the most independent among us likes to make Monday: Jer 13:1-11/Dt 32:18-19, 20, 21 [cf. changes and have an impact on others. In this Sunday’s 18a]/Mt 13:31-35 Gospel reading, Jesus demonstrates one of His most iconic Tuesday: Jer 14:17-22/Ps 79:8, 9, 11 and 13 miracles — the multiplication of the loaves. It is a sign of [9]/Mt 13:36-43 the institution of the Eucharist, when we are fed not by bread but by the Body of Christ. Wednesday: Jer 15:10, 16-21/Ps 59:2-3, 4, 10-11, In the stories of ancient pagan gods, mighty deeds 17, 18 [17d]/Mt 13:44-46 were done entirely under the gods’ own power.
