17th July 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,

I would like to thank everyone for the support you have given to myself and all the staff at Bourne End Academy throughout this academic year. Together we have overcome many challenges and I am extremely proud of all our students and their families who have shown great resilience. It would have been impossible to run our virtual school without such a high level of parent commitment and engagement throughout this period.

Return to School

I am are very excited to welcome students back to Bourne End Academy in September. To ensure all our students and staff are given the full support and understanding, of the way our academy will operate safely, in September we will run a phased return from the 1st of September:

Visitors to the school

There will be a limit with regards to external visitors to the academy during school hours. Parents should come into the academy buildings only when strictly necessary, by appointment, and ideally only one (unless for example, an interpreter or other support is required). Any such meetings should take place at a safe distance.

Travelling safely to and from school

• Getting to school – we actively encourage all students to walk or cycle where possible.

• Travel by car – we have designated drop off and collection areas for each year group bubble. We will send you the map in the last week of August.

• Public transport – we cannot emphasise strongly enough that if your child is using public transport they must adhere to the current government guidelines. A face covering must be used on all public transport.

We are in contact with our local bus service providers to ask them to put on additional services during school commute times, as capacity on public buses will be reduced. We are also working with Sara Turnball, Service Director, Transport Services and Communities at Buckinghamshire County Council.

We can’t promise that the additional services will be put on but we will keep you posted throughout the summer if there is any news to report.

It’s impossible for us to know what the demand will look like in September but we would like to reassure you that if your child is using public transport, we will of course be pragmatic and work with parents whose children may be impacted.

• Coach from BPA old site – if you are travelling on one of the allocated buses from BPA you must wear a face covering. Face coverings do not have to be a surgical mask, a cloth face covering such as a scarf or bandana that ties behind the head will suffice. Please read the government advice on how to wear a face covering.

• Face coverings - homemade non-disposable face coverings that students are wearing when they arrive must be removed by the wearer and placed into a plastic bag that the wearer has brought with them in order to take it home. The wearer must then clean their hands.

• Designated toilets – all students in their year group bubble have their own student designated toilet facilities.

• Bring own equipment – your child must arrive with the right equipment for their lessons. They are not allowed to share or borrow equipment.

• Mobiles phones - are not permitted at any time on our premises.

• Lunch / Break time - Each year group will remain in their year group bubbles during lunch and break time. To protect these bubbles, choice of food will be limited. We will write to you with further details, closer to September. No cash will be accepted.

• Water bottle – please provide your child with enough water to get them through day as there will be no water refill stations available.

• First Aid – should your child injure themselves or become unwell, we have a designated medical room, clearly marked to ensure social distancing measures are kept. Our first aiders will wear full PPE before attending to your child’s needs.

• Absence reminder – if you child is unable to attend you must report a student absence by 8.30am via email [email protected] or telephone 01628 648598. Please do not use the main school number or the BEA Office email address to report a student absence.

• COVID-19 symptoms – if your child is displaying any symptoms of COVID-19 you must NOT send your child into school for fourteen days from the first day of symptoms.

You must report any symptoms of COVID-19 to us.

Ready, Respectful and Safe

Before your child returns to school I would appreciate you stressing to him/her the importance of being responsible for their own behaviour and the health and safety of all those around them. Please do read through our policy addendum Code of Conduct.

Please also remind your children of the government guidelines on what the current social distancing measures are. Full government guidelines can be found here.

Wellbeing

Returning to the academy in September is going to require a period of adjustment for all our students and staff and supporting them through the return to the academy is paramount. To facilitate the support for our school community we will be surveying all students, on their return to school, to tailor our relationship and recovery curriculum but do please contact our pastoral team if you have any specific concerns.

I recognise that there is a lot of information to take on board and digest but please be assured that your child’s welfare is at the heart of every decision we make. We are confident that the procedures we have put in place will help to mitigate risk as far as is practicable.

Uniform for September

Please ensure you have read our updated uniform policy. All students will be expected to be wearing full uniform including ties at all times.

I am pleased to announce the following members of staff will be heading up our Year Groups:

SEN Students

We are delighted to announce that Miss White has been promoted to the Assistant SENCO role to support our new Inclusion Leader and SENCO, Mrs Smyth. Our inclusion team is making a detailed plan to support all our students need whilst maintaining the prevention measures against COVID-19. Mrs Smyth will be writing to you before September.

Ambassadorial Group

Bourne End Academy has the best Ambassadorial Group within the whole of E-ACT. They have supported me at every stage of the journey. Going forward, they are planning to extend the team and become more involved in the leadership of the academy. The Chair, Ms Hayns, will be in touch with you shortly to outline her plans and how you can get involved in continuing the re-building of BEA.

Safeguarding

Should you have any safeguarding concerns over the summer holidays please complete our safeguarding form on our website.

A-Level and GCSE Results Days

As our A- Level and GCSE year groups did not get the proper closure they should have received, we will be offering a one to one results day service. This will mean that we will give the student their result, discuss the results with them, provide full guidance on next steps and if re-takes are required what support we will be offering.

We need to adhere to social distancing measures and therefore we will be contacting parents with a booking system to arrange the one to ones. These will take place either virtually, via TEAMS or at the academy at a specific time. All the one to ones will take place on results day. Please do look out our email with the booking system week commencing the 3rd August.

Please be reminded that A-Level results are due on 13th August followed by GCSE results on the 20th August.

Reporting progress

Just before the lock-down, we sent progress report for our students. Since then, all the work has been done via the virtual environment. We have contacted you individually, at least once every two weeks to discuss the wellbeing and the progress of your child. As all the work have been assigned via ClassCharts, you can access a summary of the overall progress of your child via ClassCharts. If you are having any issue in accessing the information in ClassCharts, please get in touch with us via the Contact Us form on our website and we will be in touch to help you.

School Office

The school office will be closed from Monday 20th July until Tuesday 1st September. Should you have any queries please use our Contact Us form. These messages will be checked periodically throughout the summer holidays.

Please be aware that we will also be setting a small amount of work for our students over the summer holidays. Whilst we recognise that students need a break it is important to have a relaxed routine that will help prepare them for their return to school in September.

I wish you all a restful summer holiday and look forward to welcoming our students back in September for my first full academic year at Bourne End Academy.

Kind regards

Yours sincerely
