The GeogTaphic Dictionary of Connecticut, wlii(;h constitutes this bulletin, is designed to ai0() inches u])on the ground, or very nearl}^ 1 mile, is rei^resented by 1 iiu-h upon the nmp. Relief, or the variation of elevation, is lepresented by contour lines or lines of equal elevation above mean sea level, these contimi- lines being at vertical intervals of 1*0 feetj so that each cont(nir imlieates a level 20 feet higher than the one below it. Upon the nrnj) all water bodies, that is, bays, Ijouds, rivers, ete,, are represented in bine; the contour lines representing the relief, together with the figures showing elevation; are printed in brown; and tlie lettering and -all symbols of the works of man are ])rinted in black. The area of the State is represented u])on 33 sheets, ea

l>rising l.j minutes of latitude by 15 minutes of longitude. Kach sheet, therefore, includes abont 17A miles from north to south, and about 13 miles from east to west. Of these sheets only 20 lie entirely or practi- cally within the State; the others include ]iortions of the adiacent States of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York. The following

The spelling of the names conforms to the decisions of the V . S. Board on Geographic Names, Connecticut is one of the original 13 States; it ratified tln^ Constitu- tion on January 0, 1788. The boundary lines between Rhode Island on the one hand and Massa- chnsetts and Connecti('ut on the other are e.\tremely irregular, having originated with early colonial charters, and having been modified sub- sequently by conventions and agreements, so that it is im])0ssible to describe them in any other way than by representing them upon a map or by a detailed statement of courses and distances. The total area of the State is 4,900 square miles.
