É com grande satisfação e gratidão a todos os parceiros da BrazilFoundation que compartilhamos nossos resultados de 2011. Tivemos um ano de grande crescimento na mobilização de recursos, novas parcerias e principalmente na área de apoio a projetos. Graças ao seu apoio, generosidade e confiança, a fundação investiu mais de 2.3 milhões de dólares beneficiando a 81 organizações, em 45 municípios brasileiros.
Sob a liderança de Andrea Dellal, o IX Gala Anual foi um grande sucesso. Realizado na Biblioteca Pública de Nova York, o evento reuniu líderes empresariais, diplomatas, acadêmicos e artistas, reafirmando seu apoio a um Brasil mais justo e mais sustentável.
No contexto de comemoração de seus 10 anos de atividade, a BrazilFoundation desenvolveu um projeto inovador para avaliar sua trajetória e das organizações que apoiou. Nosso Projeto 10 Anos nos proporcionou oportunidade de refletir sobre o passado e mensurar o impacto do nosso trabalho junto a organizações parceiras. Os resultados preliminares deste trabalho têm se mostrado extremamente reveladores.
Através da parceria com o Instituto HSBC Solidariedade, 180 organizações e 271 gestores participaram de oficinas de capacitação. Ainda em 2011, vale destacar a parceria com o JAPER (Plano de Ação Conjunta entre Brasil e Estados Unidos), através da qual abrimos um edital especial de seleção de projetos beneficiando 12 organizações promovendo equidade racial através da educação, mídia e acesso à justiça.
2011 foi também um ano muito importante para o Fundo Carioca, com novas e importantes parcerias com a Tyco e LCM Commodities. O Fundo abriu seu primeiro edital de seleção de projetos, ofereceu treinamento profissional para mais de 100 jovens e promoveu um concurso fotográfico que revelou muitos talentos nas comunidades do Rio de Janeiro.
O ano também foi marcado pela expansão geográfica da fundação – com destaque para o início de atividades da BrazilFoundation Austrália, sob liderança do brasileiro André Levy, e a criação de uma representação voluntária permanente em Miami, liderada por Daniela Fonseca e Maria Carolina Tavares de Melo.
Temos muito orgulho das conquistas obtidas no último ano, e do impacto que continuamos a promover através da nossa metodologia de investimento social estratégico. It is with great satisfaction and deep gratitude to all who have supported BrazilFoundation that we share our 2011 accomplishments with you. It was a busy and extraordinary year that witnessed record-breaking fundraising and grant making for BrazilFoundation and the implementation of our historic 10 Years Project. Thanks to your generosity and support, the Foundation was able to make over 2.3 million dollars in grants, benefiting 81 organizations in 45 cities across Brazil.
Thanks to the guidance of our Chair Andrea Dellal, the IX Annual Gala in New York was a tremendous success. Held at the New York Public Library, the event raised unprecedented resources for our Annual Selection, and brought together leaders from the business, diplomatic, and philanthropic communities, all in support of a better and more sustainable Brazil.
Last year, on the occasion of our 10th anniversary, we decided it was an appropriate moment to evaluate the trajectory of our grantmaking and capacity-building. The 10 Years Project afforded both the foundation and our selected grantees the opportunity to reflect on the past, and take stock of our impacts to-date. The preliminary results of the “memory” exercise were extremely revealing, and brought to light many important lessons and achievements of our work, which you can read about in greater detail in the pages that follow.
Through our programmatic partnership with Instituto HSBC Solidariedade, 180 organizations and 271 project managers received training. Also notable in 2011 was our partnership with JAPER (the Joint Action Plan between Brazil and the United States), which resulted in its own call for proposals and the disbursement of 12 grants to organizations promoting racial equality; access to justice; and the promotion of racial and ethnic fairness in the media.
2011 was also a very important year for the Carioca Fund, with new partnerships with Tyco and LCM Commodities. The Fund was able to open its first call for proposals, offered professional training for over 100 youth and conduct a Photo Competition that revealed many talents in the Rio de Janeiro Communities.
The Foundation also witnessed a geographic expansion in the past year – BrazilFoundation of Australia was founded in Sydney by André Levy, and a volunteer chapter in Miami was established, led by Daniela Fonseca and Carolina Tavares de Melo.
We are extremely proud of the strides the Foundation has made over the past year, and the impacts we are continuing to achieve through our methodology of strategic social investment. I thank you once again for your continued support, and for helping make this work possible. I look forward to building upon the achievements of 2011 and working together to transform the social reality of Brazil.

A BrazilFoundation é uma organização que apoia iniciativas da sociedade civil brasileira que atuam diretamente em suas comunidades, buscando soluções para os desafios que enfrentam por meio do desenvolvimento de suas potencialidades. Em 2011 a BrazilFoundation completou 10 anos de atividades. Neste período 7.000 doadores e apoiadores mobilizaram cerca de 18 milhões de dólares que possibilitaram o apoio a 338 organizações de base em todo o país, nas áreas de Educação, Saúde, Direitos Humanos, Cidadania e Cultura. A metodologia de apoio contribui para promover o protagonismo local, fortalecendo as organizações, garantindo melhores resultados e a aplicação eficiente de recursos. Como funciona A BrazilFoundation tem sede nos Estados Unidos e no Brasil e uma organização afiliada, em Sydney, na Austrália. Nos Estados Unidos promove eventos culturais e sociais e campanhas de mobilização para captação de recursos, buscando aumentar o conhecimento sobre o Brasil e desenvolver uma comunidade doadora atuante e envolvida. The BrazilFoundation is a fundraising and grantmaking organization that supports Brazilian civil society initiatives that take place directly in their own communities, seeking solutions for the challenges they face by developing their own potential. In 2011, BrazilFoundation completed 10 years of operations. During this period, 7,000 donors and supporters raised nearly 18 million dollars that enabled the support of 338 local organizations throughout the country, in the areas of Education, Health, Human Rights, Participatory Development, and Culture. The support methodology encouraged local leadership, strengthening the local organizations, and guaranteeing the best results and most efficient use of resources.
How We Work BrazilFoundation has offices in the United States and Brazil, as well as an affiliated organization in Sydney, Australia. In the United States, the foundation holds cultural and social events and organizes fundraising campaigns, seeking to increase awareness around Brazil and develop a donor community that is active and involved. In Brazil, the Foundation applies its resources and develops programs that support organizations and social projects.

Those financial statments reflect total assets of $2,153,792 and $1,525,034 as of December 31, 2011 and 2010, respectively, and total revenues of $2,623,237 and $2,197,252 for the years then ended. BrazilFoundation Notes to Financial Statements Note 1 – Organization and Summary of Significant Accounting Policies a. Organization BrazilFoundation (“The Foundation”) promotes and raises awareness of education, health, economic and social justice in Brazil and within Brazilian communities. The Foundation consists of two (2) separate entities. BrazilFoundation is established as a New York not-for-profit organization and Associação BrazilFoundation is a not-for-profit public interest organization under the laws of Brazil. BrazilFoundation raises funds through various U.S. initiatives and the Associacao BrazilFoundation carries out and oversees the implementation of the Brazilian programs.
b. Cash and Cash Equivalents For purposes of the statement of cash flows, the Foundation considers all highly liquid debt instruments, purchased with a maturity of three months or less, to be cash equivalents. c. Investments In accordance with ASC subtopic 958-320 (formerly SFAS No. 124), Accounting for Certain Investments Held by not-for-profit Organizations, the Foundation reflects investments at fair value in the statement of financial position. Unrealized gains and losses on investments are reflected in the statement of activities as increases and decreases in unrestricted net assets unless their use is temporarily or permanently restricted by explicit donor stipulations or by law. Income earned on investments that is restricted by the donor is reported as increases in unrestricted net assets if the restrictions expire in the fiscal year in which the income is recognized. d. Unconditional Promises to Give and Contributions Contributions are recognized when the donor makes a promise to give to the Foundation that is, in substance, unconditional. Contributions that are restricted by the donor are reported as increases in unrestricted net assets if the restrictions expire in the fiscal year in which the contributions are recognized. All other donor-restricted contributions are reported as increases in temporarily or permanently restricted net assets depending on the nature of the restrictions. When a restriction expires, temporarily restricted net assets are reclassified to unrestricted net assets.
80 | BrazilFoundation e. Property and Equipment Property and equipment are recorded at cost and are being depreciated using the straight-line method over the estimated useful life of the asset. f. Tax Status BrazilFoundation is a not-for-profit organization exempt from Federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and has been designated as an organization which is a public corporation. g. Estimates The preparation of financial statements in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting period. Actual results could differ from those estimates. h. Financial Statement Presentation The financial statements are presented in accordance with ASC subtopic 958-205 (formerly SFAS No. 117), Financial Statements of Not-for-Profit Organizations. Under SFAS No. 117, the Foundation is required to report information regarding its financial position and activities according to three classes of net assets: unrestricted net assets, temporarily restricted net assets and permanently restricted net assets. Note 2 – Concentration of Credit Risk The Foundation maintains cash amounts with several financial institutions. As of December 31, 2011, accounts are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation up to various levels, which expire on December 31, 2012. Note 3 – Restriction on Assets
Temporarily restricted net assets in the amount of $805,750 were restricted in 2010 for operations until 2011, when they were released from restriction. Additionally, contributions received in Brazil of $1,546,109 that have not been completed or expended as of December 31, 2011, are classified as temporarily restricted revenues for 2011. The Foundation is in the process of securing long-term grants for an endowment fund for which the principal will be permanently restricted. As of December 31, 2011, $1,146,574 has been collected for this fund. Donor restricted grants paid to BrazilFoundation aggregated $1,815,035 for the year ended December 31, 2011. Note 4 – Property and Equipment Property and equipment consist of the following: Life 2011 5 to 7 years $ 30,906 $ 12,889 $ 18,017 Office Equipment and Furniture Less: Accumulated depreciation Depreciation expense for the year ended December 31, 2011 was $3,601. Note 5 – Functional Allocation of Expenses The cost of providing the various program and supporting services has been summarized on a functional basis in the statement of activities. Accordingly, certain costs have been allocated among the program and support services in reasonable ratios determined by management. Note 6 – Commitments The Foundation entered into a lease with its landlord in order to lease office space for its office in New York City. The Foundation occupies office space under a lease agreement, which provides for minimum annual payments as follows:

Rent expense for the years ended December 31, 2011 and 2010 was $43,900 and $42,600, respectively. Note 7 – Foreign Currency Translation The Foundation translates its Brazilian currency into U.S. dollars based upon an average of high and low exchange rates when transactions take place. For the years ended December 31, 2011 and 2010, BrazilFoundation realized a foreign exchange gain of $29,385 and $39,162 respectively, based upon the average method of exchange rate translation.
Note 8 – Related Party Transactions During the years ended December 31, 2011 and 2010, the Foundation transferred $396,994 and $483,840, respectively, in funds to Associação BrazilFoundation, an affiliate, for support of ongoing projects.
