President’s Message - Judy Cours

Treasurer, Jayne Marx, reports a number of checks written by members contain errors which causes the check to be rejected by the Bank. Make sure you have the correct date: NOT 2018. Most checks are to be Payable to NEWCOMERS CLUB OF SAN DIEGUITO (not NC Club). The written numbers on the check and the written amount must agree. All of this is elementary, but more and more careless mistakes are showing up in Jayne’s deposits.

Extending the warmest Welcomes to these new members --

Kathy Bratcher Kathy grew up in Michigan, lived in Wisconsin for 25+ years, and in the Bay area for 16 years. In December Kathy and Dick, her husband, moved to Solana Beach. Two daugh- ters, a son-in-law, two grandchildren, and a grand-dog live in the San Diego area, and the thrill of spending more time with family was a huge factor in their relocation deci- sion. She “officially” retired in January from her position as a nurse educator for a large medical foundation. Prior to that, Kathy worked as an RN for 45 years. She enjoys cook- ing and reading, sometimes combining the two because she loves to read cookbooks. Kathy also enjoys hiking, attending live theater productions and meeting new people. She can’t wait to make new friends here!!

Janet Hoffman Janet was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and spent her childhood there along with 8 siblings, including her twin sister. She graduated from St. Louis University and Indiana University with an MBA. Then she worked in the financial services industry as an operations officer for 25 years. As a single person all of her life, she has enjoyed lots of travel. Some of her most favorite destinations are Alaska, Australia, Israel and Italy. Not ranked, just alpha- betical! She hopes to see more of the world now that she is retired. When she’s not trav- eling, Janet lives in Solana Beach.

The next meeting will be on May 11, social at 4:00, discussion 4:30-5:30. Our March movie selection was BlacKkKlansman. There were 12 partici- pants and the discussion focused on the differences between the Academy Award win- ning adapted screenplay and the memoir of the main character. Participants also shared their experiences about living through the1970s and compared them with the themes of the movie.

The May meeting will be at the home of Judy and Art Gechman, 460 Orpheus Avenue, Encinitas. The movie will be Gloria Bell. Gloria () is a free-spirited divorcée who spends her days at a straight-laced office job and her nights on the dance floor, joyfully letting loose at clubs around . After meeting Arnold (John Turturro) on a night out, she finds herself thrust into an unexpected new romance, filled with both the joys of budding love and the complications of dating, identity and family. On , 92% (7.66 of 10) of critics have given a positive review, though, only 41% of the Audience have rated the movie 3.5 or higher (out of 5). Although the Audience rating surprised us, we were thinking our demographic might en- joy this film.

HAPPY HOUR: Mon, May 6, at at 4ish My Darling & Very Special Newcomer Friends, May is a mixed month for me - Spring is here and Hobe, my surfer dude companion, and I will start our seri- ous surfing, but May is also the completion of my work with Harmony Helpful Sage, and I have come to cher- ish her wisdom. I shall miss her soooo. Did you know, I am the most favorite of all the people she has ever worked with? How could it be any other way! But I digress and that is a conversation for another time over drinks.

To cheer myself up, I have scheduled L’ Auberge for our May HH, where I can drown my sorrows in their delightful ambience and exquisite drinks - so hope you will join me. Please wish my guest of honor, Harmony Helpful Sage, the best of luck because she is off, the very next day, to Hollywood to try to save Felicity Huffman & Lori Loughlin’s sinking careers. As ever, Harriet

Pickleball Many Newcomers have been playing Pickleball at the Altamira IV Tennis & Pickleball Club in Carlsbad--located at 6740 Paseo del Norte. It tends to be more of a "social" activity where we don't take ourselves too seriously.

If you are interested in learning more about Pickleball, you can contact Bob Blanco who is volunteering his time to teach beginner/advanced beginners on Saturday mornings from 10:11:30. No charge for lessons, only a $2 court use fee. Email Bob Blanco at: [email protected] to reserve a spot.

NOMINATIONS for Executive Committee & Standing Committee March 1 was the final date to submit names for Executive Committee and Standing Committee candidates for the 2019- 2020 term, which begins on July 1st. The Club’s Policies and Procedures requires publishing a short biography on the slate proposed by the Nominating Committee prior to the May General Meeting.

JANINE GREENHILL (President) Janine has been a “newcomer” since July, 2015, after retiring as a Civilian with the Depart- ment of Defense (Navy) in Point Loma. She enjoys many Club activities and treasurers her wonderful Newcomer friends. Janine was elected Vice President of the Newcomers Club in 2018, and is active in community service projects, Biking, Book Clubs, Cultural Arts & More, Game Nites, Mah Jongg, Movie Goers, Pickle Ball, Luncheons, Special Events and Wanderers. Janine was Membership Chairman for 2 years and enjoys meeting new members. As we move forward, her goal is for the Club to continue to be inclusive, friendly, and fun.

MARI KENNARD (Vice President) Initially Mari began her professional life as a teacher in Britain, then in Canada, -- but after moving to California in 1989, she entered the Marketing field. After some years in corporate America, Mari ended up owning and managing British Pubs in Danville and Pleasanton. When she retired, Mari moved from the Bay area to Cardiff and learned about Newcomers Club through Penny Friedman at Nia, a dance exercise class. Mah Jongg was her first New- comers’ activity; but, last summer she took the plunge (literally) and began boogie boarding. She assists in leading apart- ment refurbishments for CRC’s Carol’s house, one of Newcomer’s community service projects. There are many more New- comer activities she wants to explore, but she feels the greatest benefit is developing connections and real friendships with other members. She looks forward to “paying it forward” and contributing to the health and vitality of the Club any way she can.

MELANIE SOWA (Secretary) Melanie enthusiastically stated: “Newcomers was a WONDERFUL find when I moved to Solana Beach six years ago.” Her neighbor (and now friend) Fran Dyer took Melanie to her first NC luncheon. Since joining New- comers in July 2016, Melanie has been on the Game Night and the Luncheon planning committees, served as Vice President, then President “of this FANTASTIC organization” making many new friends along the way. She is currently serving as Secre- tary. In her “before-retirement life”, Melanie was an elementary school teacher for 20 years and an elementary school prin- cipal for almost 18 years.

DONNA BUCK (Assistant Secretary) Donna agreed to fulfill this backup position at the request of a Newcomer mem- ber. Five years ago, Donna returned to the San Diego area, where two sisters live, from Riverside County where she had retired from her career as school administrator and most recently as Director of an Early College High School. She is also a published writer of Japanese short form poetry, primarily haibun, tanka, and tanka prose, and has served as guest submis- sion editor for an international journal of this poetry. She is very active outside of Newcomers in such groups as Amnesty International and as a volunteer ESL instructor. She met Newcomers members in a walking group and has since participat- ed in book groups and craft activities. She treasures the friendships made in Newcomers and values the members' vast background and experiences. She wishes to do her part in serving Newcomers and has accepted the nomination for Assis- tant Secretary for the upcoming term.

JAYNE MARX (Treasurer) Jayne has lived in the Encinitas/Carlsbad area of San Diego since 1975 and worked in various phases of the accounting industry. She first attempted“ retirement” in 2006, and she joined Newcomers that year to meet more women friends. Although Jayne has returned to work part–time in the years since that“ retirement”, she has been active in the Club. She enjoys Mah Jongg, Canasta, Book Clubs, Wanderers, Cultural Arts, and Luncheons in addition to oth- er events that give her the opportunity to get to know all the amazing women of our Club. Her hope is that the Club will remain a welcoming group for all who join and that it continues to provide members with creative ways to become en- gaged.

CHRIS CANTRELL (Assistant Treasurer) Chris was born and raised in LA, went to Hollywood High (one of her friends and classmates was John Ritter from “Three’s Company.”) She got married and moved to Valencia after college where she had a 25 year career in property management from high end properties to HOA’s Chris raised two sons who both went to San Diego State, stayed in San Diego and became commercial real brokers/developers. The boys have given Chris and husband Bob three grandchildren (ages 19, 14, and 16 mos). Bob and Chris were married fifteen years ago and she inherited two adult step children (one lives in Wales and the other in France) and eventually a French grandson (age 10). Chris and Bob moved into their remodeled condo in Solana Beach three years ago, love living here and all our new friends!

PENNY FRIEDMAN (Parliamentarian) In June 2016 Penny and her husband, Ron Meyer, moved to Carlsbad from Cin- cinnati, Ohio. She learned about Newcomers from Judy Hirsh, another former Cincinnatian and Newcomers member. Her former life was a kaleidoscope of law, business, community service, and leadership. Penny was elected Assistant Parliamentarian in 2017 and has accepted the nomination as Parliamentarian for the 2018-19 Club year. She has par- ticipated in Board activities, learned to play Mah Jongg, worked with Community Service, is bike rider, plus much more. Besides Club activities, Penny continues to work part-time in her consulting business and does hands-on energy healing. She’s also an accomplished artist. Penny is grateful for the friendship and leadership of so many members. Newcomers Club has proven to be a wonderful way to become a part of the local community.

JUDY GECHMAN (Assistant Parliamentarian) Judy learned about our Newcomers Club through an Internet search. After living nearly 35 years in Houston, Texas, she and her husband moved to Encinitas in 2014. While in Houston, Judy had a full-time career as an attorney practicing corporate and securities law and antitrust law. Judy, together with her husband, Art, started Cinema Socializing. This Newcomers activity, which has been well-received, is struc- tured so that everyone goes to see a specified movie on their own. Participants then get together at someone’s house to discuss the movie. Judy also started a Romance Book Club which is broadening to include mainstream Wom- en’s Fiction. This book club is still in an experimental phase. Judy participates in the Mystery Book Club. She also en- joys Boogie Boarding, which she has found much more challenging than riding the slow rolling waves in the Gulf of Mexico. Outside of Newcomers, she enjoys taking her Australian labradoodle, Atticus, on therapy visits to retirement homes, schools and libraries.

TRISH HARDY (Membership Chair) Trish joined Newcomers in February 2003. She left her home state of Indiana and moved to California after graduating college. When Trish married Steve, she taught in Cupertino for ten years. Then they moved to Portland, Oregon, and she became a stay-at-home mom, raising Chad and Kristen, who are 7 months apart! (She reports: “Different fathers– same marriage – and I had fun!”) Later Trish taught computer skills at Port- land Community College and had her own FUN business of teaching teachers how to use computers in the schools. After Steve retired in 2000, they happily moved back to the California sunshine. (“Best decision ever!!”) You’ll find Trish at many NC activities: Wanderers, Cultural Arts, Mah Jongg, Canasta, Arts & Crafts, Breakfasts, Luncheons, Hap- py Hour, Parties and Game Night. You name it; she does it! Trish’s goals for the Club? Continue welcoming others, have fun meetings, and get to know all.

KIM LUBESNICK (Newsletter Chair) Kim retired as a nursing professor, and was introduced to the Club by Florence Ross. She participates in a multitude of Newcomers activities, many of which she has created, planned and led over the past 15 years. Kim currently co-chairs the Community Service committee, helps edit the monthly Newsletter, and is the Webmaster for the Club. She looks forward to another fun year in Newcomers.

BONNIE KOONSVITSKY (Assistant Newsletter Chair) Bonnie joined the Newcomers Club in August, 2007. She’s served as Assistant Treasurer and as Treasurer. Currently she is involved with Community Service and edits the Newsletter, both activities she really enjoys. She’s a regular at the Monthly General Meetings. Bonnie enjoys contributing, and she hopes to continue serving in our organization.

JO-ANN SMITH (Webmaster Chair) Jo-Ann was born and reared in Massachusetts. While attending Stanford Universi- ty, she fell in love with California and, like many alumni, she stayed. In Silicon Valley her career morphed from trainer to technical writer to the Director of Communications and Training at Cooper & Chyan Technology. Then she ad- vanced to the non-profit world as the Director of Development, Marketing and Communications at Vascular Cures before retiring. In 2015, Jo-Ann moved to San Diego with husband, Casey, to be closer to their children. She did a Google search and discovered Newcomers of San Dieguito. She still marvels at the wonderful friends she’s made while enjoying a variety of activities including book clubs, mah jongg, trips, biking, pickleball, game night, and lunch- eons. Jo-Ann served on the committee that revised the Bylaws and chaired the Mah Jongg group. She is currently the Newsletter Chair and the Assistant Webmaster.
