New Year, New Start?

Another year’s over, and a new one’s just begun; it’s 2019 already! But does it feel like a new year, new start? Social media offers new hashtags…

What might yours be?

• New Year New Me • Adopt every cat on earth? • Lose weight and work out?

But are these enough, is there more to life? Then I stumbled across this gem: • Live more for Jesus Christ

What could that mean for each of us this year? A familiar reading for the new year is the wise men’s journey in Epiphany. The magi spent their lives predicting the future, so God came to them in a way they would understand – as astronomers he had them follow a star. It may seem odd as the magi had no connection with Jesus; they didn’t believe, and yet God worked to reach out to them – just as he does with us. We are never too far away for God to reach us and give us a new start. He never gives up, and we are always included.

Jesus’ life had been foretold long before his birth: his birth in Bethlehem was no accident as it was God’s plan, just as it was with the magi. God’s plan was in place from the beginning of time. So, the wise men followed the star, seeking Jesus:

• But what are we seeking?

The magi travelled as the star beckoned them to come and see. They came to worship yet received more than they brought. They recognised that Jesus was more than a future king in the literal sense: He was also God’s Son, and they laid their gifts before him.

• What can we bring?

This New Year, perhaps our challenge is to uncover what we might bring in our search for Jesus; to make room in our hearts, to journey with him and to know him. If we’re seeking God with our hearts, then he will meet us and journey with us.

As we ponder, these words from In the Bleak Mid-Winter might show us a way to pause a while and to look to Jesus for our new start.

What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb. If I were a wise man, I would do my part, Yet what I can, I give him, give my heart. Dawn Matthew, Minister in Training Dawn Matthew, Minister in Training All enquiries regarding Church matters should be directed to:

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN - REFERENDUM ON 10TH JANUARY

I know that probably we have all had enough of referendums, but on January 10th the Parish must decide whether to accept the Neighbourhood Plan in a vote or reject it. You may have noticed some posters around the Village advising you of this, and elsewhere in this newspaper is a reminder posted by Council.

The final “Referendum Version” of the Neighbourhood Plan has been posted on the Village website - please take the time to read it.

A reminder that, in summary, what the Neighbourhood Plan seeks to deliver is:

• Housing at sites preferred by the community, protecting the Parish from inappropriate speculative development up to 2031. • The re-establishment of Limits to development, removed in the Local Plan, to further protect from unwanted development. • Housing mix to specifically meet the needs of the community. • Affordable housing for local people. • Windfall development based on specific criteria. • Protection for five structures of local heritage value. • A requirement for development to make a positive contribution to its surroundings. • All six special areas of open space are awarded Local Green Space designation which is akin to the Green Belt in terms of protection. • All five playing fields are protected from development. • All seven important views are recognised in the Plan. • Important woodland, trees and hedges are protected. • Biodiversity and wildlife corridors are safeguarded. • Ridge and Furrow fields are recognised, and development restricted. • Development will need to take flood risk into account. • Rights of way are protected. • Existing community facilities are protected, and new ones supported. • The extension of the Primary School is supported. • Sufficient off-road parking in development is secured. • Existing businesses are protected, and new ones supported. • Criteria for farm diversification is provided. • Improved mobile and tele communications infrastructure is supported.

Everyone who is registered to vote should have/will receive a polling card from Harborough District Council.

What would a YES vote mean?

If a simple majority vote YES to the Plan in the Referendum, it will become part of the statutory Development Plan for the District. Any planning decisions and conditions e.g. on housing and the environment, within our Parish must be made with reference to our Neighbourhood Plan.

What would a NO vote mean?

If a simple majority vote NO to the Plan, the local protections and conditions stated in the Policies will not apply and Harborough District Council will make planning decisions based upon Harborough-wide and national policies

By voting on January 10th you can influence the future of the Village, so I hope that you will be able to do so.

Thank you, Bob Morley Chair of the Advisory Committee 14/12/18 [email protected]

READING GLASSES FOUND BY THE CANAL

A pair of (probably) lady’s glasses were found beside the canal on 9th December. They are a reddish / purple colour with crystals on the edge of the frame. The inside of the arm of the glasses identifies these as from www.readoptics.com

If these belong to you then contact the South Kilworth News – contact details on the front page. NEWS FROM SOUTH KILWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Autumn term ended with lots of exciting festive activities.

Reception and Year 1 attended Methodist Church for the "journey through Christmas", where the children were able to walk around different scenes set up to tell the story of Christmas.

Reception and Years 1 & 2 went on a trip to the Tamworth Snowdome Winter Wonderland and had loads of fun playing in the snow and sliding down the slopes.

The Christmas play this year was called Midwife Crisis. The children worked hard learning their lines, as well as lots of songs, and put on a wonderful show.

Children and staff raised money for Save the Children, by making a donation and wearing Christmas jumpers on the last Friday of term. And that evening there was the annual school Christmas disco at the village hall.

The whole school also went to a fantastic production of Peter Pan at the De Montfort Hall.

This hectic festive period ended with the Christmas Carol Service at the village church on the last day of term.

Happy New Year Everyone!!

Rachel Glastonbury

SOUTH KILWORTH NEWS 500TH ISSUE

This is the 500th issue of the South Kilworth News and so more than 41 years since the first edition was circulated in 1976.

A lot has changed in this time – I understand that when the South Kilworth News was originally produced typewriters and duplicators were used. Now there is the internet, email contributions, word processing and Partridges printing for us.

The internet made it easy for me to look up what was happening in 1976 and so here are some reminders / historical notes :-

• Concorde flew the Atlantic • The Queen opened the NEC in Birmingham • John Curry won a skating gold medal • Anita Roddick opens the first branch of Body Shop • Anne Warburton became the first female British ambassador (to Denmark) • The UK won the Eurovision Song Contest with Brotherhood of Man singing Save All Your Kisses For Me • James Callaghan becomes Prime Minister after the resignation of Harold Wilson. • Southampton FC won the FA Cup Final beating Manchester United 1-0 • Liverpool FC won the Football League and the UEFA Cup • UK and Iceland end the Cod War • 22 June–16 July – heat wave reaches its peak with the temperature attaining 26.7 °C (80 °F) every day of this period. For fifteen consecutive days, 23 June–7 July inclusive, it reaches 32.2 °C (90 °F) somewhere in ; and five days – the first being 26 June – see the temperature exceed 35 °C (95 °F). For the whole meteorological summer (June–August), temperatures will average 21 °C and there will be 669 hours of sunshine. This is contributing to the worst drought in the since the 1720s. • Ford launches a new small three-door hatchback, the Fiesta • Great Britain and Northern Ireland compete at the Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and win 3 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals. • A fire destroys the pier head at Southend Pier. • Drought at its most severe. Parts of South West England go for 45 days with no rain in July and August. • The Great Clock of Westminster (or Big Ben) suffers internal damage and stops running for over nine months. • 10,000 Protestant and Catholic women demonstrate for peace in Northern Ireland. • 100 police officers and 60 carnival-goers are injured during riots at the Notting Hill Carnival. • The Ford Cortina Mark IV is launched. • The InterCity 125 high-speed train is introduced into passenger service on British Rail, initially between London Paddington station, Bristol and south Wales; the units will still be in front-line service 40 years later. • The Damned release New Rose, the first single marketed as "punk rock". • Racing driver James Hunt becomes Formula One world champion. • Opening of the Royal National Theatre on the South Bank in London, in premises designed by Sir Denys Lasdun. • Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan win the Nobel Peace Prize • Denis Healey announces to Parliament that he has successfully negotiated a £2,300,000,000 loan for Britain from the International Monetary Fund on condition that £2,500,000,000 is cut from public expenditure: the NHS, education and social benefit sectors are not affected by these cuts. • Inflation stood at 16.5% – lower than the previous year's level, but still one of the highest since records began in 1750. However, at one stage during 1976 inflation exceeded 24%.

ARE YOU THINKING OF SELLING YOUR HOUSE ?
