Biblical Worldview Development While Learning Origins Science BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW DEVELOPMENT WHILE LEARNING ORIGINS SCIENCE by Charleton Dean King Liberty University A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Education Liberty University 2020 2 BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW DEVELOPMENT WHILE LEARNING ORIGINS SCIENCE by Charleton Dean King A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Education Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA 2020 APPROVED BY: David Vacchi, Ph.D., Committee Chair James Fyock, Ed.D., Committee Member 3 ABSTRACT The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenology was to understand the lived experience of how homeschooled high school students integrate origins science into a biblical worldview. For this study, biblical worldview development is the process of faith development in either form or content through an individual’s understanding and application of the Bible. The theoretical framework guiding this study is Fowler’s faith development theory as it relates an individual’s physical, mental, and moral growth to the development of their worldview. This study sought to answer the following research question: how do homeschooled high school students integrate origins science into a biblical worldview? Participants were selected from homeschooled families from across the United States. Data collection included free word association documents, semi-structured interviews, and a focus group. The result of this study is a model for biblical worldview development that explains the lived experience of homeschoolers integrating origins science into a biblical worldview through the components of preparation, education, determination, and reflection. Parents significantly influence the components of the resulting model, causing participants to develop their worldview according to that of their parents. The resulting model for biblical worldview development aligns with the faith stages of Fowler’s faith development theory and supports the latter’s use as a worldview development theory. Keywords: biblical worldview development, creation, evolution, faith development theory, homeschool, origins science, worldview 4 Dedication To my dear wife and children who have supported me during this entire process— you have been a true gift and joy in my life. 5 Acknowledgments I am grateful to God for His provision and strength during this entire dissertation process. Dr. James Swezey initially encouraged me to pursue worldview development during an intensive course. I am thankful for his much-needed direction during the early formation of this dissertation. Dr. David Vacchi, my dissertation chair, was most helpful in guiding me through the dissertation process. My committee member, Dr. James Fyock, has been an encouragement as a fellow believer interested in worldview studies. Dr. Katherine Schultz graciously took the time to approve my use of the 3DWS – Form C as well as provide scoring reports. Monica Bowman provided edits of my drafts and helpful feedback during the early stages of each chapter. Finally, my wife, Keri, has been exceedingly supportive from the start of this entire process. Five years and two additional children later, we are all finishing this degree together. My children (Joshua, Jackson, and Julia) have unknowingly sacrificed Saturdays with me for more than five years so I could finish this degree. Thank you all. 6 Table of Contents ABSTRACT ............................................................................................................................... 3 Dedication APOLOGETIC RESOURCES A Young Earth ministry perspective, namely contrasting Scripture to true science now and during the ages. By Dr. Jim Pagels [email protected] 9/2016 Editor Dr. John Fricke, Emeritus Professor of Biology, Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Copyright This book is offered as an educational resource on a no cost basis. Contents are not to be reproduced for the purpose of sale. Note that all Scriptural passages are taken from the English Standard Version. 1 I HAVE NO GREATER JOY THAN TO HEAR THAT MY CHILDREN WALK IN THE TRUTH III JOHN 1:4 Forward - Although there is much young Earth information available from commercial sources and on the internet, it was the impression of this writer that no resource that deals with basic topical issues correlating the young Earth philosophy and science exists for professional church workers. To this end, Apologetic Resources is being offered. Intended Audience – The intended audience of this reference material is primarily use by professional church workers, i.e., teachers, pastors, youth workers, etc., namely those who choose to uphold the literal interpretation of Genesis and the inerrancy of Holy Scripture. The focus in this regard is Young Earth Creationism and the catastrophic nature of the global Genesis Flood keeping in mind that Genesis 1-11 is foundational to most of the significant doctrines of Holy Scripture. Of course, laymen may well also find this reference a valuable resource. There is obviously a realistic interplay between Scripture, apologetics and true science. The goal of this document is to provide clarity to this interaction.

  • The Idea of Natural Selection in Politics, Schools, and Courts
FREEDOM TO ERR: THE IDEA OF NATURAL SELECTION IN POLITICS, SCHOOLS, AND COURTS Paul D. Carrington* The biologists are surely correct who proclaim that "there is no serious scientific doubt that evolution occurred or that natural selection is a major mechanism in its occurrence."' But worthy of their salute is the wisdom of President Jefferson that "error of opinion may be tolerated, where reason is left free to combat it."2 Jefferson's wisdom was uttered in response to the deep division between Anglophiles and Francophiles that seriously threatened the stability of the Republic he governed.3 It now serves to call into question the quoted biologists' next sentence stating that "[i]t is scientifically inappropriate and pedagogically irresponsible for creationist pseudoscience, including but not limited to 'intelligent design,' to be introduced into the science curricula of our nation's public schools."4 Especially questionable is the wisdom of elite federal courts acting on the advice of such eminent biologists to invoke the Constitution of the United States to suppress minor scientific heresies uttered in the education of adolescents by their parents or * Professor of Law, Duke University. It is pertinent that I served as an elected trustee of the Ann Arbor Board of Education in 1970-1973; and as chair of the Public Education Committee of the Michigan Civil Liberties Union 1968-1978. In the latter role, I assisted in the repre- sentation of numerous teachers, parents, and children in their quarrels with local school boards. It is also pertinent that in 2000-2006, I served as a member of the National Academy of Science Panel on Law, Science and Technology.

  • The Impotent Fury of William Dembski
THE DESIGN REVOLUTION? How William Dembski Is Dodging Questions About Intelligent Design By Mark Perakh Who is William A. Dembski? We are told that he has PhD degrees in mathematics and philosophy plus more degrees - in theology and what not – a long list of degrees indeed. [1] To acquire all those degrees certainly required an unconventional penchant for getting as many degrees as possible. We all know that degrees alone do not make a person a scientist. Scientific degrees are not like ranks in the military where a general is always above a mere colonel. Degrees are only a formal indicator of a person’s educational status. A scientist’s reputation and authority are based on his degrees only to a negligible extent. What really attests to a person’s status in science is publications in professional journals and anthologies and references to one’s work by colleagues. This is the domain where Dembski has so far remained practically invisible. All his multiple publications have little or nothing to do with science. He is a mathematician who did not prove any theorem and derived not a single formula. When he writes about probability theory or information theory -- on which he is proclaimed to be an expert -- the real experts in these fields (using the words of the prominent mathematician David Wolpert) “squint, furrow one's brows, and then shrug.” [2] When encountering critique of his work, Dembski is selective in choosing when to reply to his critics and when to ignore their critique. His preferred targets for replies are those critics who do not boast comparable long lists of formal credentials – this enables him to contemptuously dismiss the critical comments by pointing to the alleged lack of qualification of his opponents while avoiding answering the essence of their critical remarks.

  • Analysis and Synopsis Resources Ray Comfort Has Written a Lengthy Introduction to His Edition of Darwin's Origin of Species
NAVIGATION Analysis and synopsis Resources Ray Comfort has written a lengthy introduction to his edition of Darwin's Origin of Species. This Video introduction is partly lifted from other sources, partly Comfort's own musings on Darwin's life and Analysis of the legacy, and partly Comfort's evangelism. Introduction Virtually every page contains scientific and historical errors. List of Schools Comfort repeats hackneyed creationist claims: a lack of fossils with transitional forms (false), the Bibliography & Links complexity of DNA requiring a creator (false), the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics somehow making evolution impossible (false). Comfort offers no fresh ideas, and simply parrots standard creationist CONTACT talking points, all long-ago debunked by sites such as TalkOrigins.org. [email protected] Comfort attacks Darwin personally, assailing what he believes to be Darwin's racism and [email protected] misogyny. Comfort even goes so far as to say that Darwin's most "famous student" was Adolf 1-800-290-6006 Hitler. Comfort does not provide meaningful evidence for such outrageous claims, only a few out- of-context quotes in a limp effort to tarnish Darwin. Comfort's use of attacks that are both ad hominem and insupportable exposes him as someone willing to bear false witness in order to promote his agenda. Comfort dwells upon Darwin's religious beliefs, as if these beliefs were the key to evolution rather than the scientific evidence Darwin marshaled. It isn't surprising, then, to find that religion is at the heart of Comfort's own agenda. Because Comfort is unable to make meaningful attacks on evolution on the basis of the scientific evidence, he turns to non-scientific arguments.

  • Argument from Authority What Is an Argument from Authority?
Argument from Authority What is an argument from authority? • “We should believe P because an expert, or authority, believes P.” “This fallacy is committed whenever we argue for some point, not because it is well grounded in fact or logic but because of the authority of the person who presented it. The standing or prestige of a recognised authority is said to guarantee the truth of the claim, and anyone who doubts it is made to feel presumptuous or egotistical. The thrust of the argument is, “Who are you to challenge the judgment of this authority or the experience of that expert?” Burton Porter, The Voice of Reason, p. 96 p. 97: “In a sense, this seems reasonable because we do accept ideas on authority all the time. No one can check the evidence of everything that is claimed, so we must depend on the information provided by authorities.” • We need to remember that authorities are often wrong. • E.g. “Just as the doctrine of organic evolution is universally accepted among thinking biologists, so also the geosynclinal origin of the major mountain ranges is an established principle in geology.” Thomas Clark and Colin Stearn, The Geological Evolution of North America: A Regional Approach to Historical Geology, p.43 (Ronald Press, 1960) Philip Tetlock experiment • In the mid-1980s, the psychologist Philip Tetlock convinced 284 political experts to make nearly a hundred predictions each about a variety of possible future events. • Tetlock insisted that the experts specify which of two outcomes they expected and also assign a probability to their prediction.

  • Evolution Vs. God Companion Guide | 1 Despite Their Distinctions, All Are Horses
COMPANION GUIDE, PART 1 Ray Comfort In Part 1 of this Companion Guide, designed to be used with “Evolution vs. God,” the purpose is to give you more information about the common claims of evolutionists. It will help you know how to counter those claims and give you greater confidence in addressing this vital issue. Much of this information has been adapted from How to Know God Exists: Scientific Proof of God, which you may want to read for further study. “When you’re talking about kinds or change in families, you’re actually talking about macroevolution.” Evolutionists typically cite examples of natural selection and claim that they’re evidence of evolution. But natural selection, or adaptation, is simply variations within a kind and has nothing to do with Darwinian evolution. Though it’s sometimes known as microevolution, the fact is that nothing actually evolves during “microevolution.” For example, look at the variety within the dog family, or kind— from the tiny Chihuahua to the huge Great Dane. They have incredible differences, but they are still dogs. Within the horse kind are the donkey, zebra, draft horse, and the dwarf pony. www.livingwaters.com Evolution vs. God Companion Guide | 1 Despite their distinctions, all are horses. There are huge variations within humankind, from Asian to African to Aboriginal to Caucasian. But we are all within the same species, Homo sapiens. Darwin’s theory of evolution, however, is based on the concept of macroevolution. This is the inference that small variations within a kind can accumulate and lead to large changes over long periods of time.

Most recently, Academic Freedom Bills (AFBs), which permit science teachers to introduce instructional materials that argue against TE, have been proposed in thirteen state legislatures across the United States. Though at present only Louisiana has passed such a bill into law, AFBs are currently pending in Florida, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. State legislators should reject further efforts to enact AFBs into law. AFBs, and the organizations that lobby for them, misrepresent the views of the scientific community regarding the viability of TE. They obfuscate professional and legal protections of teachers' rights to academic freedom, and they propagate inaccurate scientific information.
