tallinnovation2018.com CONFERENCE CO-CHAIRS MESSAGE

Share your Experience Welcome to Chicago! We are pleased to present the inaugural Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, which brings together a critical cross-section of tall building owners, developers, occupiers, operators, designers, during the Event! engineers, and builders – along with the interested public – to investigate the cutting-edge in sustainable urbanism, as presented by the world’s foremost examples.

#CTBUHAwards The event you will be experiencing over the course of the next two days is the result of an evolutionary process in our CTBUH Awards Program. The CTBUH Annual Awards Event was established in 2001 as part of a dinner in honor of Lynn S. Beedle, the Council’s founder. From that intimate beginning, it has become an immensely popular and influential program, covered by the global media. It has expanded the range of @CTBUH disciplines and projects recognized, to fully embrace the impact that tall buildings have on urban life. The Tall + Urban Innovation Conference reflects not only the expanding scope and influence of the Awards facebook.com/CTBUH program, but also the increasing pace of innovation in the industry.

This two-day conference will see the owner/developer and design teams for 48 Finalist projects compete @CTBUH_HQ in front of an international audience and live juries, for winning distinctions across nine award categories. The presentations you will see acknowledge the wide scope of disciplines involved in bringing youtube.com/CTBUH from concept to reality. They address the approaches and built examples that can help guide us through the challenges we face, where climate change and urbanization collide, presenting significant challenges to the built environment, and to humanity itself. The expertise and inventiveness demonstrated by these projects and people provide inspiration and show the great potential offered by “city shapers” to solve the Connect with us! problems of today and tomorrow. We sincerely hope you enjoy the next two days! Utilizing Alchemy Properties excess development rights from the historic Xavier High School, the building’s design artfully resolves a host of requirements, including the provision of needed expansion Daniel Kaplan space for Xavier, and the creation of highly-crafted residential units that take Senior Partner advantage of their elevated location. FXCollaborative

A Generous Public Domain at an Urban Crossroads: 150 North Riverside, Chicago Anthony Scacco The 150 North Riverside site is located prominently at the confluence of the three Executive Vice President branches of the Chicago River, and less than one block away from one of Chicago’s Riverside Investment & Development busiest commuter train stations. With exposed railroad tracks on the west side of the site and the city requirement for a riverside pedestrian path on the east side, the James Goettsch project team met the challenge of a tight site by consolidating building loads onto CEO & Partner a narrow core, minimizing the footprint of the tower and delivering generous public Goettsch Partners space and transparency to the street level.

Streets Take to the Sky and Dance: American Copper Buildings, New York City Simon Koster The American Copper Buildings, two bold and dynamic residential towers on New Principal York City’s East River, are the tallest copper-clad buildings in the world. The natural JDS Development material is expected to patina gracefully over time. The 761-unit luxury rental community reaches 41 and 48 stories in height, with an iconic 3-story skybridge Gregg Pasquarelli connecting the two towers, which pivot noticeably. Contoured for the Context: Gaia Building, Quito Tommy Schwarzkopf Located in the Ecuadorian capital of Quito, the Gaia Building has been constructed as Executive President & Owner a new landmark for the city. Comprised of a total of 15,000 square meters of mixed-use Uribe & Schwarzkopf space and topped with a large roof garden, its form is visually connected with the distant Andes mountains. Inspired by the area’s dynamism, the main concept of Gabriela Anker the design was to impart a sense of movement through manipulation of the façade, Principal and Co-founder from which portions are strategically “excavated,” such that the building has no exterior Leppanen + Anker Arquitectos right-angled corners.. 8 10 YEAR AWARD: 2007 COMPLETIONS A Day 1: Wednesday 30 May, 1:45–3:15 p.m. 2B B Chair: Ron Klemencic, Chairman & CEO, MKA / Past CTBUH Chairman (2001-2006) Shining a Light on Livability: Lumiere, Sydney Michael Goldrick Perhaps only a few could have predicted the degree to which Lumiere Residences Development Directo would so thoroughly encapsulate an Australian sensibility toward vertical architecture Frasers Property when it originally completed. Ten years on, the tower’s numerous green features and common-sense amenities have been replicated by many other residential towers Ross Palmer throughout the country, validating its impact as a model for the future. Senior Partner Foster + Partners

For a Modern Media Company, a Tower of Clarity and Transparency: New York Times Tower, New York City Terry Hayes Over the past 10 years, the New York Times Tower has become a landmark worthy of the Senior Vice President institution that commissioned it, particularly because of its resolution of the symbolic and The New York Times Company functional pressures of a rapidly evolving media company in a neighborhood that bears its name. It achieves a high level of transparency with the innovation of a second skin of Serge Drouin cleverly-spaced ceramic rods, which reduce the heat load to a point where the building is Associate Architect energy-efficient and yet has the great luxury of floor-to-ceiling, water-white glass. Renzo Piano Building Workshop

Bringing Office Space Up into the Light: Poly Real Estate Headquarters, Guangzhou Stephen Wang Poly Real Estate Headquarters is an office and trade center development consisting of Executive Director two towers, each coupled with a low-rise podium that accommodates exhibition and Poly Real Estate Development retail uses; the below-grade spaces include an exhibition hall and trade center. About CTBUH

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is the world’s leading resource for professionals focused on the inception, design, construction, and operation of tall buildings and future cities. Founded in 1969 and headquartered at Chicago’s historic Monroe Building, the CTBUH is a not-for-profit organization with an Asia Headquarters office at Tongji University, Shanghai; a Research Office at Iuav University, Venice, Italy; and an Academic Office at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. CTBUH facilitates the exchange of the latest knowledge available on tall buildings around the world through publications, research, events, working groups, web resources, and its extensive network of international representatives. The Council’s research department is spearheading the investigation of the next generation of tall buildings by aiding original research on sustainability and key development issues. The Council’s free database on tall buildings, The Skyscraper Center, is updated daily with detailed information, images, data, and news. The CTBUH also developed the international standards for measuring tall building height and is recognized as the arbiter for bestowing such designations as “The World’s Tallest Building.”
