Lasoski Prevails in Inaugural FVP National Sprint League Knoxville Event!

Knoxville, IA, May 8, 2015 – Danny Lasoski scored victory #102 at the Knoxville Raceway, but it still was a historic first. Saturday’s event marked the first ever visit for the FVP National Sprint League at the “Sprint Car Capital of the World”, Knoxville Raceway. Ninety-eight sprint cars were in attendance for what served as a season opener at the Knoxville Raceway after three straight weeks of rainouts. Russ Hall took a popular win in the 360 class, and Devin Kline took the opener with the 305 class in a feature that honored the late Brian Hetrick. In addition, Matt Moro captured the 12-lap Mark Fee Memorial Dirt Truck feature to score his first career win in that class at Knoxville.

The FVP National Sprint League feature got off to a chaotic start. Something broke on the machine of Terry McCarl coming down the front stretch to complete lap one. As he tried to keep his machine straight and slowed, he was clipped by Brian Brown, who suffered some damage. That turned McCarl’s car sideways setting off a chain reaction that collected Brad Loyet and then RJ Johnson. McCarl was taken in for observation, and only Brown returned after several repairs under the open red period.

Bill Balog led the field back to green flag racing, ahead of Wayne Johnson, Danny Lasoski, Tim Keading and Josh Schneiderman. The next 20 laps of the 25-lap event went non-stop. Johnson was able to find his way around Balog on lap six to take the lead. Lasoski was on the move himself. He picked off Balog for third on lap eight.

Johnson maintained his advantage until lap 16, when Lasoski got by in traffic. Two laps later, Kaeding worked by Balog for third. On lap 21, Brown came to a stop on the backstretch, bringing out the caution flag. The four lap Dash saw Lasoski leading Johnson, Kaeding, Balog and Bryan Clauson.

Kaeding surged to second on the restart, and closed the gap a bit in the closing stages. Lasoski kept his lead, however, and powered to win over Kaeding, Johnson, Clauson and KSE Hard-charger, Dusty Zomer. Mark Dobmeier, Justin Henderson, Balog, Brooke Tatnell and Ian Madsen rounded out the top ten.

Lasoski also set quick time in Minnesota Mafia qualifying and earned $200 over a 38-car field. Henderson, RJ Johnson, Madsen and Zomer won heat races. Brown won the B main.

“(Crew Chief) Guy Forbrook is a magician around this place,” said Lasoski in Victory Lane. “He makes my job a lot easier. There’s nothing we’d like more than to be standing here in August.”

Russ Hall led the 18-lap 360 feature at the outset ahead of Matt Moro and Jon Agan. The lead trio remained the same when Cody Ledger came to a stop in turn four on lap three. Justin Henderson was fourth, ahead of Tony Bruce Jr.

Agan and Henderson exchanged third on lap seven, before Agan took off and passed Mooro for second a lap later. Henderson followed him into third. Disaster struck for Agan on lap 14, however, when he tangled with the lapped machine of Bart Friedrichsen. He was sidelined. A fourth running Clint Garner also came to a stop at the same time. The four-lap Dash to the checkers saw Hall trying to hold off Henderson. The latter got a run to take the lead on lap 16, but Hall shot under him going into turn one and won a classic dogfight for his third career win at Knoxville. Henderson followed ahead of Bruce, Moro and Nate Van Haaften. Joe Beaver, hard-charger Tony Shilling, Garner, Randy Martin and Josh Baughman completed the top ten.

Henderson set quick time, while Blake Hahn, Jordan Weaver, Shilling and Bruce won heat races. Tom Lenz won the B.

“I was trying to hold my line down there on the bottom,” said Hall who donated part of his winnings to “Avery’s Army.” “(Henderson) got a hold of some moisture in the middle of the track and got by me there. I knew if I beat him down here in this corner, he wasn’t going to get by me.”

J Kinder shot out to an early lead in the 15-lap 305 feature ahead of Devin Kline and Trevor Smith. Chris Walraven was into third by lap four, and McKenna Haase moved into fourth on lap six. By lap eight, Stacey Alexander had shot from 16th to fifth.

Cody Ambers came to a stop in turn two on lap nine and was struck by Christopher Scank. No one was injured. On the lap nine restart, Kinder led Kline, Walraven and Haase back to green. Both Kinder and Haase machines fell off the pace (Haase ran out of fuel) when the green fell.

That handed the lead the Kline, who managed to keep the lead through a pair of restarts. Stacey Alexander finished his hard-charger effort in second, ahead of Walraven, Kevin Hetrick and rookie Christian Bowman. Trevor Smith, Kade Higday, Chase Wanner, Jeff Wilke and Mike Mayberry rounded out the top ten. Walraven set quick time, while Alexander, Wilke and Wanner won the heats.

Join us next Saturday night, May 16 for McKay Insurance/Allied Insurance Night! All three divisions of sprint cars will be in action. For more information on the Knoxville Raceway, visit www.KnoxvilleRaceway.com!

Henderson Cruises, Haase Makes History at Knoxville! by Bill Wright

Knoxville, IA, May 15, 2015 – Justin Henderson had no peer in driving the BDS Motorsports #1 to victory in 410 action at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday. His seventh career win was worth $3,000. McKenna Haase made history in the 305 class as she became the first female feature winner in a sprint car at the historic Knoxville Raceway. Wayne Johnson scored his 11th career win in the 360 class.

Before a lap could be completed, RJ Johnson got upside down for the second week in a row after contact with another car to start the 20-lap 410 feature. Tasker Phillips was also caught up in the accident with nowhere to go. Dusty Zomer was also involved, but the team made repairs and had him back out to rejoin the tail of the field. Lynton Jeffrey was not as lucky and retired.

Ian Madsen led early over Henderson and Logan Forler. Brooke Tatnell moved into third a lap later, and Brian Brown followed him into fourth on lap three. Henderson shot by Madsen to lead lap four, right before Bronson Maeschen spun in turn three, collecting Dustin Selvage.

Henderson led Madsen, Tatnell, Brown and Danny Lasoski back to green flag racing. Just two more laps were in the books before Aaron Reutzel blew a left rear tire, collecting Tim Kaeding, who got upside down. No one was injured. On the restart, Lasoski and Terry McCarl moved into fourth and fifth. Both moved by Tatnell for third and fourth three laps later.

Brown would spin when trying to get by Tatnell for fith on lap 11 bringing out the final caution. Henderson had no peer, pulling away from Madsen. Lasoski would shoot to second, but couldn’t make up any ground on the Sioux Falls driver. Following Henderson and Lasoski to the checkers, were Madsen, McCarl and Davey Heskin. Don Droud Jr., who had climbed as high as fifth, earned hard-charger honors, going from 19th to sixth. Dusty Zomer recovered seventh from the tail, and Tatnell, Brown and Austin McCarl completed the top ten. Brown registered quick time and also won his heat race. Henderson and Lasoski won the other heats, as all heat winners came from sixth. Austin McCarl won the B main.

“I was really happy with this racecar all night,” said Henderson in Victory Lane. “It was fast from the word ‘go’. Bryan (Sunby) has really done his homework. We switched to EMI chassis this year…and Parker power, you can’t do any better. It’s really fun to drive. I didn’t know if Lasoski was all over me, but I had a feeling he was right there. I made some mistakes, because I was running too hard. It’s a little lesson for next week. Be confident and have patience.”

Wayne Johnson led the entirety of the 18-lap 360 main event. Clint Garner trailed him early on, followed by pole-sitter, Matt Moro. The race saw three caution flags fly. On lap three, Calvin Landis came to a stop in turn two. Keoni Texeira spun on lap eight, and Dakota Hendrickson contacted the infield wall on the front straight on that restart.

When things went green, Garner made a bid at Johnson for the lead, but Wayne drove the #77x between Garner and the turn two wall to shoot down the backstretch. Justin Henderson would come on in the late going, edging Garner in the final corner for second. Nate Van Haaften was fourth, and Tony Shilling fifth. Joe Beaver, Russ Hall, Jack Dover, Jon Agan and Ryan Roberts rounded out the top ten. Garner registered quick time, and Johnson, Roberts and Henderson won heat races.

“I ran up on a couple of those guys (lapped traffic) pretty quick,” said Johnson in Victory Lane. “I wasn’t expecting to get there that quick. John Cooley, back in Australia…he built that frame and sent a couple over for us to try. He said I’d love it, and he was right. That’s a brand new Charlie Fisher power plant. We’re able to run here for a couple of weeks so we want to get ready for the 360 Nationals. I think we’re going to put (the car) away. I wanted to block the slide job (from Garner) on the restart, but I was so good on the top. I saw him there, and I knew he was going to try it. He’s a good racer and he gave me room there on the top.”

Before a lap could get completed in the 15-lap 305 feature, Brad Bowman flipped in turn one. Fellow rookie Trevor Smith was also involved and the pair were uninjured, but done for the night. Another rookie, Chase Wanner, took the early lead, while McKenna Haase’s move into second was negated when the caution flew for debris on the track.

On the restart, Wanner led Tanner Edwards, Haase, Chris Walraven and J Kinder back to green. Just two more laps were in the books before Kevin Hetrick spun. Kinder shot from sixth to third on the restart. On lap four, Ben Woods got into the wall, as the yellow flag flew again.

While Wanner was using the cushion, Haase found the inside groove to her liking, and she shot by the leader on lap six. Two more cautions would come out, one for Rob Weuve on lap seven, and one for Tanner Edwards on lap 11. Haase shot away from the field in clean air to record the first ever sprint car win by a female in Knoxville Raceway history. Wanner, Kinder, Stacey Alexander and Kade Higday followed her to the checkers. Hard-charger, Mitchell Alexander, Chris Walraven, Hetrick, Mike Mayberry and Devin Kline rounded out the top ten. Haase set quick time, while Stacey Alexander, Higday and Mitchell Alexander took the heat races.

“I don’t think it’s sank in yet,” said Haase, who will graduate from Carlisle High School on Sunday. “This was the night I told everyone I wanted to win, because I wanted to be on a podium two days in a row. This is a dream come true!”

Join us next Saturday night, May 23 for Pizza Hut Night! All three divisions of Knoxville Championship Cup Series sprint cars will be back in action. For more information on the Knoxville Raceway, visit www.KnoxvilleRaceway.com!

5/23 Henderson Doubles Up at Knoxville! by Bill Wright

Knoxville, IA, May 23, 2015 – Justin Henderson put his name into the record books, becoming the first driver since Brian Brown a year ago to win both the 360 and 410 features in one night at the Knoxville Raceway. The 410 win on Saturday night was worth $3,000 and was also the Sioux Falls, South Dakota’s driver’s second in that class in as many weeks. Devin Kline completed the night’s winners’ list with a 305 victory.

Brian Brown, who started fourth in the 410 feature, shot to the early lead in the 20-lapper. Henderson settled into second, with Danny Lasoski grabbing third from Bill Balog on lap two. Brown separated himself from the field and entered heavy lapped traffic at the halfway point. Though Henderson saw some gains through the middle stages, it looked as if Brown would not be headed.

Unfortunately for Brown, his motor expired on lap 12 and he helplessly pulled into the infield. Henderson assumed the lead, as Lasoski, Tim Kaeding and dueled wildly for second, third and fourth.

The only stoppage of the event came on lap 15, when Matt Covington, making his first career 410 start, flipped in turn two. He was uninjured. The restart with five to go, saw Henderson leading Lasoski, Kaeding, Kerry Madsen and Davey Heskin back to green. While the duel for second, third and fourth stayed heated, Henderson would pull away in the BDS Motorsports #1 for his eighth career 410 win. Kerry Madsen went from fourth to second in the last three laps, and was followed to the stripe by Lasoski, Kaaeding and Terry McCarl. Davey Heskin, Dusty Zomer, Brooke Tatnell, Ian Madsen and hard-charger, Mark Dobmeier rounded out the top ten.

Brown set quick time, while Dustin Selvage, Dobmeier, Tatnell and Zomer won heat races. Terry McCarl won the B main.

“The track was really tricky,” said Henderson in Victory Lane. “Historically, I struggle at a track like this, but Bryan (Sundby) puts a really good car underneath me. Danny obviously had a really good car, and Brian had us all beat. My hat’s off to ‘Brownie’ for having a good car and running up front. It was bad luck for him, but we’ll take advantage, the money and the trophy. I’m really proud of this team.”

Henderson led Matt Moro and Nate Van Haaften early in the 15-lap 360 main event. Van Haaften used the low side to shoot by Moro
