Samuel Bird 4 May 1840 Born 1792 Witnesham, Suffolk. 1841 - Master of the Workhouse age 45, Wife Ann age 40 and 3 children. In August 1848 he resigned to take "a situation at under the Board of Directors of the Eastern Counties railway." He was not replaced. 1851 - Stoke Cottages, Ipswich St. Mary Stoke. Samuel was Clerk to Company age 59, wife Ann age 50 born Glemham Magna, plus Son John age 17 born Nacton. Widowed by 1861. Died 1869 at Ipswich. Reverend John Perowne became a missionary with the Church Missionary Society in Bengal and his wife Eliza was a teacher in the missionary school. George Rix 6 Feb 1843 His wife Sarah fell ill in the Autumn of 1843 and died in the December. A relation (of his wife) Mary Ann Ely was brought in as a temporary substitute, initially for 6 weeks, then extended to 25 March 1844. On 5 Feb 1844 he was told that he could continue after 25 March provided he was married. They married at the beginning of March! (Erpingham 1844 Mar 13 161). 1841 - Wayland Workhouse (Rockland All Saints). George Rix, schoolmaster age 20, Sarah Rix, schoolmistress age 25. 1849 - Resigned as Governor 3 Sep 1849 after being declared incompetent. 1851 - George Rix, Schoolmaster at Swaffham Prison, b. 1819 at Dereham. Wife Mary Ann b. 1815 at Forncett St. Mary.

Robert S. Chapman 24 Sep 1849 Previously of Shipmeadow Workhouse, Wangford Union. Wife Hannah. Fell ill in Feb 1850 & Thomas Potter was appointed as Deputy. Potter, Thomas 18 Mar 1850 Previously of Buxton Workhouse, Aylsham Union. Wife Mary. Porter Sheringham Daniel Hastings 22 Aug 1836 Born 1816 at Mundesley. Moved across to Gimingham as Schoolmaster from 23 Jan 1837. 1841 - Scotter, Lincolnshire, schoolmaster age 26, with wife Lavinia, 20, and 2 children. Became a Relieving Officer in the Gainsborough Union in 1846. 1851 - Misterton, Notts., Relieving Officer & Registrar age 35, Lavinia age 34 plus 5 children.

Stephen Winfield NK Appears as Porter at Sheringham in the 1841 Census. Born 1770 at Wickmere. Wife Sarah. Pauper in the West Beckham workhouse 1851. Died in the December quarter of 1856.

Gimingham Fenn Lewis 22 Aug 1836 Born 1811 at Salthouse. Married Ann Barnes. Ag Lab 1841, 1851, 1861. Died Q3 1861.

Thomas Knyvett 8 Jun 1840 Born 1811 at Newton Flotman. In 1841, just after leaving the house, he was lodging at the Angel Inn, Stratton St. Mary (baker age 30). 1851 - Ag Lab at the Heath, Horsford, with wife Deborah.

Robert Empson 31 May 1841 Born 1806 at either Palling or Acle. Wife Sarah. From the records he was married and supporting children before 1841. Living at Palling as an Ag Lab 1851 & 1861. Robert Dye 1 Nov 1841 Born 1820 at North Walsham. His father James was a Sheriff's Officer. 1841 - Cooper. With parents in Chapel Street. 1851 - Cooper (unmarried) lodging in Chapel Street, North Walsham.

John Green 5 Sep 1842 Several possibles. He tendered his resignation on 6 Mar 1848 to become Porter at the Downham Union Workhouse. James Pycroft 26 Dec 1842 Appointed temporary assistant to John Green for 3 months. There was clearly a lot going on in the House at the time but no specifics were stated in the Minutes. James also appears in the list of 'Other Players.' He was an unsuccessful candidate for the permanent position of Porter when Green left.

Andrew Child 21 Mar 1848 Born 1822 at Blakeney. Was of Field Dalling at time of appointment. Still in post at West Beckham in 1851 but by 1861 was Porter at the St. Faith's workhouse (unmarried and age 38).

See his entry above. Daniel Banham Holl 10 Sep 1838 Born 1811 at Norwich St. John Timberhill. Impregnated inmate Elizabeth Howes (see list of Paupers). Married Eliza Wiggett - the previous schoolmistress - in 1840. 1841 - Chapel Street, Trunch, schoolmaster age 30. With Eliza and a William Wiggett age 20. 1851 - Trunch - Daniel Schoolmaster age 40, Eliza age 48, born Briston. Appointed British Postal Service 1853. Parish Clerk. Resigned 1 Nov 1847 to be a Relieving Officer in Forehoe Union; "it is the opinion of this Board that he will make a much better Relieving Officer than a Schoolmaster." 1841 - Market Place, Aylsham. Elizabeth 'Eliza' Wiggett 10 Sep 1838 Born 1803 at Briston. See Daniel Holl's entry above. In White's Directory 1836 as grocer & draper of Briston. Dinah Hornegold 16 Mar 1840 Born 1815 at St. Martin at Oak, Norwich. She married the Schoolmaster Samuel Thomas Bennett 5 May 1841 at Saint Augustine, Norwich; Norwich Jun 1841 13 347. The couple were Schoolmaster and Schoolmistress of the Blything Union Workhouse (Blythburgh, Suffolk) at the Census on 6 June 1841. In 1851 the couple were in Lynn Road, Downham Market with their children Samuel age 9 and Esther age 7 (Esther was her Mother's name). Samuel was then a Carpenter. Census 1861 - St. Martin's Lane, Norwich. Census 1871 - Caledonian Terrace, Dereham Road, North Heigham; widow Diana age 56 living with son Samuel and Grand-daughter Esther Reeves.

Mary Sidney 28 Sep 1840 Born 1821 at Woolpit, Suffolk and lived there except for the short period in Norfolk. Her mother Mary ran a seminary and the post office, taken over by Mary before 1881. Buried at Woolpit 1910, 'age 91.' A. Thompson NA Stood in for Mary Sidney when she was ill in February 1841. Hannah Riches 28 Jun 1841 Sacked for inefficiency. Possibly the daughter of farmer Titus Riches of Paston. Mary Rump 4 Mar 1844 Became unwell in April 1845 and the MO's opinion was that she "would not recover her health for several months." Resigned. The only single Mary Rump in 1841 was living in Lakenham, age 20, no occupation. Elizabeth Mary Bird 19 May 1845 The only candidate. She tendered her resignation on 9 Feb 1846. Too many 'possibles.' Frances Murrell 23 Feb 1846 Tendered her resignation 23 Nov 1846 'by reason of ill-health.' Daughter of Relieving Officer Timothy. Born 1821 at Norwich. 1861 - Unmarried Schoolmistress of Pump Street, Cromer. Rolfe, Mary Ann 7 Dec 1846 Age 38 & from Saxlingham. 8 Feb 1847: 'The Chaplain ... reported that he found the Girls' School in the utmost confusion, that the Schoolmistress is not capable of conducting a Union School. She has neither system nor self confidence and the girls evidently do not pay the least attention to any thing she say.' She was given a month's notice. 1841 - Saxlingham. Schoolmistress age 30, living with her mother Mary. Emily Ward 1 Mar 1847 Born 1822 at Marham but was 'of Weasenham' when appointed. Still in post at West Beckham in 1851. Medical Officers Cromer District Charles Earle 12 April 1836 Born 1777 at Norwich. Widowed by 1841. Census 1841 & 1851 - West Street, Cromer. Surgeon & General Practitioner. Paper in the Provincial Medical & Surgical Journal Vol. 10, No. 23, Jun. 10, 1846 on Obstetric cases he encountered. Died February 1861.

Became increasingly incompetent (mental illness?) and resigned 7 Mar 1842. Died 1845. Henry Timothy Murrell 21 Mar 1842 Lived at Southrepps. See notes below. 1841 - Attorney's Clerk age 20, living in Garden Street. He abruptly stopped his duties in June 1848 and was relieved by the Sheringham Governor Samuel Bird. He resigned formally on 3 Jul 1848. 1851 - Heigham. Solicitor's Clerk age 34, born Norwich St. Stephen's. Wife Louisa born Northrepps. See notices at the end of this document re his insolvency at this time. 1861 - Attorney's Clerk. Living in Kimberley Street, Heigham. 1871 - No. 20 Bedford Street, Heigham. Attorney's General Clerk. Lydia Ellis 11 May 1846 Born 1816. 1841 - Cley, 'independent' living with brother Edmund (ship agent). Declared to be incompetent 17 Aug 1846. Mary Ann Martin was re-employed as gap-filler. A Lydia Ellis died in Erpingham RD in the June quarter of 1848. Mary Ann Martin 17 Aug 1846 Began again 20 Sep 1846. Gave in her notice on 11 Oct 1847. Margaret Partridge 8 Nov 1847 She had quit by the end of the month. The most likely candidate was a 35 year old Female Servant to farmer George Rix (later Governor at Gimingham perhaps?) at Briston in 1841. Reappears 1851 in Martham as 47 year old servant (b. Martham) to wheelwright & Innkeeper William Rogers.

London Gazette - March 9 1849 WHEREAS a Petition of Henry Timothy Murrell, formerly of Southrepps, in the county of Norfolk, Relieving Officer , then of Sustead, in the said County , out of business, then of Saint Martin's at Oak, in the city of Norwich, out of business, and now of Chapel Street, Crooks-place, in the parish of Saint Stephen's, in the city of Norwich, out of business and unemployed, an insolvent debtor, having been filed in the County Court of Norfolk, at the Guildhall, in the city of Norwich, the said Henry Timothy Murrell is hereby required to appear before the said Court, on the 26th day of March instant, at ten of the clock in the forenoon precisely, for his first examination touching his debts, estate, and effects, and to be further dealt with according to the provisions of the said Statutes; and the choice of the creditors' assignees is to take place at the time so appointed. All persons indebted to the said Henry Timothy Murrell, or that have any of his effects, are not to pay or deliver the same but to Mr. Thomas Hitchen Palmer, Clerk of the said Court, at his office, at Redwell-street, in the city of Norwich, the Official Assignee of the estate and effects of the said insolvent.

London Gazette - April 22 1851 WHEREAS a Petition of Henry Timothy Murrell, formerly of Southrepps, in the county of Norfolk, Relieving Officer and Registrar of Births and Deaths, afterwards of Sustead, in Norfolk, unemployed, then of Chapel-street, Crooks-place, in the parish of Saint Stephen, in the city of Norwich, unemployed, afterwards of Davy'sbuildings, Union-place, in the hamlet of Heigham, in the county of the said city, Law Writer, then lodging at No. 65, High-street, Bloomsbury, in the county of Middlesex, Law Writer, and now of Davy's-buildings aforesaid, first a Law Writer, and now an Attorney's Clerk, an insolvent debtor, having been filed in the County Court of Norfolk, at Norwich, and an interim order for protection from process having been given to the said Henry Timothy Murrell, under the provisions of the Statutes in that case made and provided, the said Henry Timothy Murrell is hereby required to appear before the said Court, on the 10th day of May next, at ten o'clock in the forenoon precisely, for- his first examination touching his debts, estate, and effects, and to be further dealt with according to the provisions of the said Statutes; and the choice of the creditors' assignees is to take place at the time so appointed.
